Well, here we are with the first blu-ray batch of Toaru Majutsu no Index II. As with our previous batch, this went through extra editing and QCing.
Some special news that will come along with these blu-ray releases: we will include a secondary script containing “Sparky” for “Biribiri” (switch if you don’t want to see it). Considering the entire team (except Ulrezaj) thought of it as a perfect nickname, we figured it’d be nice to add it back in.
Big thanks goes to XMtS, who provided us with a final QC report. And to Path, who, without a doubt, is a master of Early Modern English… He also assisted with the QC of an episode.
Now if you’ll excuse me, I have a game to play until the next Index airs.
EDIT (2/5/2011):: We have re-released the files to fix the OP/ED font problems in the original releases. You can download the patch above to update your files to the latest versions if you downloaded the older releases. The DDLs and the torrent have been replaced, so there is no need to patch if you downloaded the files on or after the time of this edit.
arEDIT (2/5/2011)::Also we won’t be bothering with 1080p encodes this time around, it’s not worth the effort/time spent (~9-10hrs extra per ep) just so your player doesn’t have to upscale it on playback. I actually gave it a shot (wasted like ~20hrs of my time) and decided against it. I won’t do 2+gb encodes / 1080p ep just to keep the original dithering to stop the banding either, it’s dumb when there isn’t any real visual gains to show for it.
Sparky EDIT: What people don’t seem to understand is that: yes, there is a script for Sparky and for Biribiri. The DEFAULT script is Biribiri. Those who want to see Sparky will switch the subs, while those who do not… well, do nothing. Stop complaining about it when I’ve given you the choice.
Note:
Episode 2+3 commentary tracks (PCM PID 1101) appear to be the same (I seeked them randomly every 30s or so) as the Main PCM Audio track (PID 1100). Episode 1’s PID 1101 has commentary, the others don’t appear to. We have no idea if this is intentional or the person authoring the BD screwed up and muxed PID 1100 track (main audio) twice for those 2 aforementioned eps.

It’s because of the fine ordered dither they used on the BD, more bitrate is needed to keep the gradients from banding out.
At 1.5gb / ep for the 1080p it’s still not nearly enough bitrate so I’m going to try redithering it and see if I can get a sensible filesize (1-1.2gb/ep max), but if not we won’t bother doing the 1080s.

We call her Sakura because that is her name. Your statement suggest that we should call everyone by what their name means ex Just because someones name is John doesn’t mean we call them “The grace or mercy of the Lord,” (or u can look up the Hebrew definition or Shakespearean, whichever u prefer).
However, Birbiri (Japanese language) is a Nickname made up for her. In this case, the translation or meaning for Biribiri to english (which I’ve found 2) becomes “Please conserve electricity, or “like an electric shock, rattling, ripping.” OBVIOUSLY we aren’t going to call Misaka that. What UTW is doing is translating the japanese word to english for us. If you don’t want words translated, then go to ayako subs. Its not hard.
If and I mean if all fansubs translated Biribiri to Sparky or shocky or whatever in the subs, would this even be an argument?

Ya 1080 would be a upscale madness. UTW made the right call with just doing 720. Unfortunate not to have our 1080 glory but better to not force an upscale and maintain your standard for high quality.

Here’s a shot from the 1080p raw for ep01 I just finished encoding. Note the grain pattern is different from the 720p because I was forced to redither it differently so it wouldn’t band. Still @ crf 18 it came out to like 1.07gb for video alone. Let me know on opinions. It’s like a good 5-6hrs to redither each episode for the 1080p which adds up to a fair amount of time, it also can’t be used for the 720p so it’s additional work which probably isn’t worth it. If you want to compare the two, its at around 18:05.00 in to ep01.

Damn it! I won’t be able to watch the 1080p nor the 720p since my computer sucks. No matter what media player I use or updates I do, I still can’t even play 720p smoothly.
I certainly appreciate the time/effort ar is putting in to give a chance at a 1080p version.
1.07gb is a good size but the time taken (5-6hrs of your time) does bother me. If it’s too much work then it’s cool, a chance was at least given unlike most other groups.
I cannot provide a 720p Screen-shot as I am still in the process of downloading.

@ar: At that quality level, don’t waste your time. That’s pretty much exactly what your 720p releases look like upscaled on my 1080p monitor. Actually slightly worse. Not even close to being worth the time it’s going to take you.
@ninja: JC STAFF animates their shows in 1024×576. An outside studio then does a lazy upscale (usually they just blur-filter it), and it’s then broadcast in 1280×720.
On Blu-Rays of JC STAFF shows, better filters are used to achieve acceptable quality at 1280×720. Usually a type of edge-sharpening filter, combined with a deband filter. It’s not as good looking as “true” 720p, but it’s better than the TV version.
Now, if JC STAFF would only pull their heads out of their asses and calibrate their colors properly… everything they release is incredibly washed out.
Hmmm well like I said in the new Fractale post. File size in and around 1.5gb is fine with me. It can be bigger if it has good reason to be. That said I leave it to you ar since the time commitment per ep is large and I don’t want it to be a burden. Plus quality is number 1 priority.
With all that said here is the 1080v720 comparison. It was a bitch to get the exact frame for some reason lol. 720 is scaled up to 1920×1080.

I thought biribiri was the onomatopoeia for an electric spark. So I always thought that Sparky worked as a translation for it because they both sound kinda demeaning (Shocker doesn’t quite work, it doesn’t sound mean enough).

nvm, JC STAFF shows are upscaled internally for broadcast TV. That’s why it’s lazy.
They only do studio upscales for their Blu-Rays.
There is a solid difference between the original 1080p image and the 720p image (upscaled back to 1080p). The sharpness is pretty much the same, but that upscaled 720p image is clearly inferior to the original 1080p image. On big LCDs the difference would be even more noticeable. It’s your call, but some people will surely appreciate the 1080p release.
In the meantime, we wait for the Angel Beats torrent batch. 🙂
Touma should call Mikoto “pika-pika” in the English Dub. That’d be fucking perfect. It’s got the right feel to it and fits the mouth motions near-perfectly. Though it probably wouldn’t make it past the copyright cops <_<

720p vs 1080p: Ask yourself, what would Biribiri do? –No idea. Ask yourself, what would Sparky do? -Oh, you know what Sparky would do. You could smell the burnt hair and shoe leather of the next complainer from here.

I’d say the name argument is pretty valid, from a translation perspective. He’s calling her Biribiri….he’s not calling her the meaning behind it, it’s only implied. Having to “translate” that implication EVERY time is really pandering to the lowest denominator of viewers. If you really need your hand held that much, you should probably stick to dubs.
Sure, its their translation, their group, they can do what they want. Of course. And it’s great that the Sparky add-on is an extra for those who like it. But just like Fractale, when you start taking liberties and translating things as “Me” when someone refers to themselves in the third person, or give proper names when they are referring to someone in another way, you’re messing up the original meaning, the intended meaning, and it sucks because it doesn’t make sense, and takes away from the dialogue, and the anime overall.
Maybe UTW can include the bad translations and the good ones in seperate scrips from now on in the HD releases, and only have the bad ones in the SD, so it forces everyone to upgrade…
o, and skip the 1080p, no point.
@ Crush imo, the meaning is the same. third person, using your own name, or just saying me is the same thing. Ninja is cool. I am cool. Me is cool. whats the difference other then the way you say it? its the same meaning.
However, the difference there can be personality. I’m no where near familiar with the Japanese dialect but I often see anime characters use third person. Referring to yourself in third person is more of a more childish type personality while saying “I” is more serious and normal.
Here is the problem, in English, 99% of people never speak in third person (or at least that I’ve come across) so its natural to translate it as “I.” I guess this is where knowledge comes into play. In Japan, is it normal to refer to yourself in third person? Is it done sometimes? very little? or hardly any like in English? If its done sometimes or above, then perhaps its better to just translate it as “I” since its normal. And the subs should be translated normally to us as well for the English audience. But if its rare to speak in third person in Japan, then its obvious the Aurthur intended for the character that uses third person to have that type of personality.
Hope I didn’t sound confusing. Basically the norm should be translated normally, the un-norm should be looked at and translated with more consideration.

Well, it’s too bad Touma never called her Pikapika cause that’s the actual onomatopoeia for electric sparks (hence Sparky). Biribiri refers to electric shocks, so Eclipse’s nickname (Shocker) was actually quite on the ball.
But this discussion has gone back and forth for months now so it’s pointless to keep it going. Besides, my understanding may be wrong but far as I know they said they added a second script with Sparky so it’s not like they’re forcing it on us.

It looks like they included “commentary” tracks on 2+3 without commentary~ lol. I don’t know if they screwed up authoring the bd or what now, but it’s definitely the same on the BD. I encoded the commentary tracks correctly.

Too many people complaining over trivial things here. “Sparky” is an extra subtitle track which involves one more keypress after launching the video (in mpc-hc, ‘S’), so if you don’t like it, you will never see it.
The source obviously doesn’t warrant a 1080p encode so if you want to waste your time, bandwidth and HDD space, just DL or better yet, buy the BDs and encode them yourself. Remuxing the subs with your video is not a problem.
And if you don’t like the way they translate/edit, why are you here?
I’ll be Downloading this soon, I’ve been downloading the other BD titles the past few days (most likely to the love of of ISP…). It is a shame that you’re only doing 720p and not 1080, but considering the time it takes, I don’t blame you in the slightest.

It’s both a function of time and the fact that 1080p encodes of Index don’t really look any better than just playing the 720p version in fullscreen.

I’m only asking this because I don’t feel the need for Blu-ray for this series, I don’t want to redownload a 700mb file (read INTERNET CAP NOT STORAGE), I don’t like FLAC and think creditless OP and ED looks uglier and bland, but I still appreciate the work UTW put into perfecting the BD script and I would like to have them if possible please.
We CAN add them. However, our raw for the blu-ray and for the TV version are different. If you had any plans of using the script to mux to a raw (our raw, specifically), you’d have to shift them. At least for episode 1-5.
Oh. Yes, the scripts included in the blu-rays have been re-edited/QC’d for term consistency and to fix any grammatical errors.

I really don’t like doing screenshot comparisons since they are just a hassle finding exact frames and that website trolls me too often~
I tell you what though, I’m uploading a 250mb cut out the encoded 1080p mkv (no audio muxed) and I’ll edit this post with the link when it’s done uploading. It’s from episode 1, probably between the 9-14min mark or so.
It’s actually a good area to compare against because it’s quite dark and somewhat dull/blurry, obviously where they weren’t able to sharpen it much and they spammed with a fine dither.
Mind you this 1080p has had a fair bit more filtering than the 720p, of which all I did was mildly sharpen it. 1080p was sharpened a fair bit, redithered then further sharpened/antialiased (because this already had some visible aliasing in quite a few scenes) to specifically darken the edges in darker areas where their original dither dulled the hell out of them.
Imho that’s why it’s not the worth doing the 1080p, rather it’d be better to just download the BDMV itself since re-encoding it to 1080p won’t have all that great results even with lots of bitrate. It’s one of those cases where re-encoding typically makes it worse at 1080p because of the HD mastering process used to produce it, and this just as the previous Index universe BD’s (Index/Railgun) actually look better encoded at 720p and watched upscaled, because the source itself is low-res AND it’s very washed out at times. The higher the res you go the worse it ends up looking.
I for one almost always prefer 1080p but this is one of those cases, where I actually prefer to watch a well-encoded 720p. It’s mostly because downscaling and resharpening it at 1280×720 actually gets rid of a lot of the aliasing and reduces the amount of overall blur/dullness in the video.

Dunno if you know about this already, but there’s actually a pretty easy way to find the exact frame you’re on in a video and to navigate to specific frames. In mpc-hc, pause the video and hit Ctrl-G (or “Go to” under the “Play” menu) and the second box will tell you what frame you’re currently on.
You can also enter a frame to navigate to in that box, and the video will jump directly to that frame and still be paused.
Thanks for the comparison clip. You’re right, the edges just look way to soft, even after all that filtering. J.C. Staff suck at BD authoring so I kind of expected this.
how do you switch the subtitle track? i can only see the default track under navigate–>subtitle language. am i doing something wrong? (mpc-hc)
Press the S key, but biribiri isn’t used in ep1-3 so there isn’t a 2nd sub track.
Sorry UTW, but I’m going to bug you a little with your style choices in Episode 2. Granted, I understand Japanese so I don’t read the subs, but I download from here so that my non-Japanese speaking friend can watch with me.
The ‘thees’ and ‘thous’ and ‘dosts’ were unnecessary during the beginning segment with the Archbishop. Besides her choice of a few words, it’s not like she was speaking in keigo. But then again I’m not sure how you would have conveyed the difference in tone that Stiyl mentions, so maybe it’s not such a big deal. Just wondering what prompted you to go that way, because I’m having trouble explaining it to my friend.

I also find it quite hilarious that you point out the very basics of the script, rather than the… not so basics? Instead of asking “why use ‘sine die’?” you ask “why use ‘thou’? let’s think about its meaning for a second guys.” (you will automatically choose another word for “thou” upon seeing it, btw).
In my opinion, the early modern English used is _perfect_. The original script, before removing some, was far more complicated. This is dumbed down so that people with a low IQ can still read it and figure out its meaning, while still saying, “Oh, that’s why Stiyl asked about her Japanese!”—it merely allows you to notice the difference between a common word and an uncommon word.
Last but not least: her speech becomes a lot less retarded after Stiyl mentions it to her.
I wasn’t asking “why use thou” specifically, it was “why use olde English.” Especially since you keep using it after he corrects her, even after she mostly drops the old conjugations.
Basically, my conversation with my friend was:

She DOES still talk like that, though not as much as before. We continue to use it, but as you can (hopefully) tell, it’s not as “hardcore” as it was before.
Dunno how to make it any clearer than that, actually. We tried to make the “second part” as… simple as possible, while trying to contain hints of “what?” with it. While part one contains vocabulary that our own team had to Google up, part two uses pretty basic grammar.
Don’t get me wrong, I’d have loved to use early English for this entire script. But well ~
