This episode has raging books and teachers who aren’t afraid of ghosts without their glasses~ Apparently there’s some plot development too, but since I haven’t had the chance to watch it from beginning to end as yet I haven’t got much to add on this front!
Oh yeah… only one name change this week! Kujo gained a macron and transformed into Kuj?! It turns out Kujo is actually written Kujou (this went unnoticed obviously!), but seeing as it’s common place for the Japanese to drop of long ‘o’ sounds and romanize it with o+macron I thought I’d give it a try (plus this way chances are most people won’t even notice the difference, and I can argue it’s correct!).
tl;dr Scapegoat.
Enjoy and all that jazz~
Copy/paste names list, there’s probably more but they are the main characters.!
Names: Kuj? Kazuya, Victorica de Blois, Glaviel de Blois, Ms. Cecil, Avril Bradley

By the way if anybody does get any sign lag (even though you shouldn’t because they are light enough) I recommend upgrading to this version of VSFilter. It has prebuffer enabled by default (so I’m told) and it’s being worked on actively by guys involved in the MPC-HC project thus it has improvements from their internal subtitle renderer codebase.
Even without prebuffer it’s seems a fair bit faster overall for rendering more complex signs. For 32-bit MPC-HC or other 32-bit players use the x86 version, for 64-bit use the x64 version. These builds are compiled by XhmikosR.
Edit: (14/03/2001) VSFilter links updated – ar

Thanks for the release! You need some kind of official name list or something, hard to keep track of all the name changes 😛

    Thanks!! Victorica = <3

  3. I’ve been waiting for this one. i do wish that there was another DLL other than Fileserve.T hat website has a grudge against me, and never gives me a code to enter. And then later on decides I’ve had too many attempts… having a static IP most of the time, means I have to wait years for the torrent to finish 🙁

Yesssss. I hold out for your releases every week and I am never disappointed!

  5. You’ve got yourself a group of very talented people! You always pick very interesting anime and translate it amazingly cool. I can’t even imaging what knowledge and effort it takes.

    @Larnu:
Disable adblock on Fileserve. Then the caption might appear. I had a similar problem and that fixed it.

  7. Say, the Engrish line in the ED sounds to me like “Give us hope through the labyrinth’s motion only”.

Thanks for the episode! For your batch change list: Victorica’s line at 21:10 (I hid because someone I didn’t know…) is mistimed. Kujo starts speaking, but her line remains onscreen. His line is timed to silence in the next scene.

  17. moefag on February 7, 2011 at 1:11 am said:

    Thanks again.

  18. archivisth
    You better rewatch that 😉
If you still see a mistake then I suggest upgrading since your computer can’t handle a single line of text without lagging 😛
(“You hid? Where?” is what he says and it shows up on screen exactly when he starts speaking (maybe even a couple frames before) Victoricas line DOES NOT remain)

  19. She does however make a pretty big pause that’s not reflected in the sub… (it’s still the same line in the sub)
Don’t see how you can confuse her voice with his though.

Kujou and Kuj? are the same bloody thing. I rather prefer the more discreet Kuj? plus it has the added effect of reminding you that he is indeed Japanese.

    thanks for the release guys!

  23. Cujo with the added effect of scaring the shit out of his classmates (even more)

  25. wolfbane on February 7, 2011 at 5:35 am said:

Nice job! Thanks for making this series available. But why translate ‘La feé dorée de la haute tour’ and superimpose it on the book cover? They didn’t bother in the other releases and since the core text was in French anyway it looked more nataural the way it was.

  26. @wolfbane
Because not everyone can read French I guess, and it’s obvious they focused on it frequently on purpose (to highlight the books name they were reading). It’s kinda like translating Japanese signs into English. I know not everyone agrees with translating non-japanese signs, and I probably wouldn’t bother if they hadn’t made it a focal point.

  27. ohh forgot to check it. thanks dude…. XD

  28. Orlwor on February 7, 2011 at 6:58 am said:

    You are my hero ar, my week isn’t complete without Gosick :D. Also, thank you for translating the French, as I am one of the people that doesn’t know any French. Trying to get a handle on Japanese right now and my brain doesn’t have room for two languages at a time ^^;
Do you have plans to do the BDs?
arEdit: Yeah most likely if they look nice, which they should do. If the ED CD single isn’t out by the time the first BD is, I might delay it until the lyrics are released. OP CDS comes out 2nd March, and first BD (out of 12) comes out sometime April. It’ll be 2 eps per BD.

  31. ‘ve been waiting for this. Good job as always, thank you
IMHO, I don’t think that tling the french signs is the best choices here. They introduce some kind of mystery that exists even in the original Japanese text that is intended to be heard by Japanese audience, and most likely this Japanese audience knows nothing of french.
But, well, I know french very well so maybe I’m being subjective… and it does NOT bother me.
Good news that you have plans for the BDs 🙂

  33. x86 update of VSFilter aint working

  34. it probably works but when i click on it it gives me 404 not found

Question???? Wouldn’t the names on Crunchyroll’s subtitles be the official translated names? Wouldn’t they have gotten it approved by Japan? It’s so confusing with the Victorique and Victorica and the others. I looked on the gosick.tv website and there’s only Katakana, how did you get Victorica? I like the 720p but I don’t like the confusion.
arEdit: Right Click on characters images, and check the filename in the image properties. All characters image filenames are translated to there official english counterparts (since they obviously don’t match the katakana at all). Crunchyroll just used what Tokyopop had as english tl’s for the names, and it seems they probably didn’t bother checking with the author because he spells them differently.

  41. The German novel version from Tokyopop has also “Victorica”. Weird that only the english one got it wrong.

  42. Just keep in mind that Crunchyroll honestly doesn’t know all that much more than fansubbers most of the time, and you’ll be alright.
Also good tech advice in this post.

  43. Attempt at Engrish:
    Loneliness, fighting back again
Seems to be, like it never ends
Give us hope, through the labyrinth (unsure of rest, but sounds like 1 word)

  48. What’s the status of the goddamn Angel Beats batch?

  49. @JJJ
Status is waiting on 2 parts of the Making to be tl’d. When they are done we’ll release it all together.

  50. I’ve got a question. Which render output will the VsFilter work on (DirectVob)? If possible, name them all, if not, will it work on EVR custom pres? Asking since I can’t test it out myself right now.

  51. Thanks guys! As always quality will out.

  52. @ninja
Works on all afaik. I use it with normal EVR fine, and it works with custom definitely.

  53. k, thanks ar, finally got home but I can’t seem to get it to work with media player classic 64 bit when using EVR custom…

  54. Works fine for me, just tried it now. Try adding it to external filters and setting the merit to Prefer. That should force it. Also make sure the MPCHC sub renderer is disabled. Playback -> untick Autoload subtitles.

  55. got it. thanks ar. BTW, I found out 2 retarded things that might be interesting to some. If u are using windows 7 and are interested in watching ur anime in media player, u have to follow these steps http://tinyurl.com/yhcgo24
also, if MP isn’t showing the video and ur positive u have the right codacs, its time to reinstall mp by going to programs and features, click on “turn windows features on or off,” uncheck media features, restart, then check it again.
Pretty gay but I’m glad I found this out.

  56. o, and make sure u run cmd as an admin or it won’t work. with this, MP is officially my favorite player I think.

  57. “Works fine for me, just tried it now. Try adding it to external filters and setting the merit to Prefer. That should force it. Also make sure the MPCHC sub renderer is disabled. Playback -> untick Autoload subtitles.” – ar
That got it to work for me now. Thanks ar! =)
One question, when adding the external filters, one of the DirectVobSubs has “auto-loading version”. Any idea what the difference is and which of the two should get added?

  58. Haali Splitter always ran the Auto-Loading Version for me, so I’d say just add that. That’s the version I have added in my External Filters. I’ve never come across it using the non-Auto Loading Version tbh.

  59. Shadow on February 9, 2011 at 6:22 pm said:

Thanks, ar! I forgot about the option in Haali for Auto-load VSFilter. I switched it to Yes and it loads it up now w/o having to place anything in External Filters. Video plays smooth now when I tested it at that Kanzaki scene at the end of Windex 16.
I used to use MPC’s ‘internal’ sub prebuffer to eliminate the studdering in scenes like that, although it would occasional cause the subs to flicker when multiple lines were timed differently. Now with all that turned off again, it plays smooth like everywhere else in the vid. Sweet!

  60. Haxton Fale on February 9, 2011 at 7:01 pm said:

I’m only catching up with the show atm, but why would you name Triple Entente as Allies, even though it was World War I? It might be confusing for those who don’t know history enough. And I don’t think making such mistakes will turn out good…

  61. Shichirou on February 9, 2011 at 7:12 pm said:

    @Haxton
How is it a mistake? Allied power during WW1 == Triple Entente

  62. “That boy is my servant”. Epic XD

  63. @Shichirou
mistake as in not teaching those of lesser education / common sense / ability to use brain.
    probably? 🙂

  64. gash, its so stupid setting up Windows Media Player but I got it working to how I want it. Its become my fav video player now xD
    WIN 7 WMP + CCCP + CoreAVC + CoreAAC + VSFilter + Win7DSFilterTweaker = Epic Win 🙂

  65. Haxton Fale on February 10, 2011 at 5:48 am said:

@Shichirou: Germany, Austria-Hungary and Italy were also alies during WW1. ‘Allied power’ as in specific force in conflict appeared in WW2. Naming Triple Entente as Allies (especially capitalised) may be misleading and taken as ignorance by some people.

  66. @Haxton
Maybe the better term might be just “the Entente”, the Triple Entente was how they started but by the end there was much more than 3 countries. Germany et al aka The Triple Alliance were better known as the Central Powers. So you had the Entente Powers vs the Central Powers. Also they specifically name the countries involved 2 lines away, so it’s kinda hard to get it mixed up.

  67. Haxton Fale on February 11, 2011 at 1:05 pm said:

    @ar
As far as I agree about ‘the Entente’, I can’t agree that naming countries helps in here – on the contrary, it adds up to the confusion. I go with opinion ‘screw the idiots and let the evolution do its job’, but there might be some decent people with quite low historical knowledge (maybe unable to learn history) and naming countries from Entente ‘Allies’ may make them mix Italy with WW2 Allies. I know it’s just a minor issue and I’m sorry that IS put me in ranting mode about such useless details.

  68. you said something about “plot” in this episode.. unfortunately i dont really think so.. its just some lines of the novel beeing stretched to make plot for the episodes because they made a major mistake and left out avril at the first episode and later, and need to put her in now since she i a main character,… and like this, they messed up the time. avril was in the school 3 months before kazuya..
also, they used this place to show grevilles (i will still say greville, i think it makes more sense since the language in their country is french and greville seems more legit to me) attitude towards victorica which they also didnt really manage to show properly before even though its important..

  69. @break
BONES did it in purpose, how come a studio can make a mistake when they have this series planned since 2010, and the novel author is with them, you can see how they handle the change and made it flow better w/c is turned out to be better. ^^
