Oh man, this episode is tear-jerking ;_; like drama all the way. [across the sky etc.] Let me tell ya, they are not going to leave any loose ends regardless of its shortness as a series. Everything’s starting to get wrapped up in a neat bundle… yet they manage to keep a huge part of the story teetering on-edge until the end. And by end I mean the part that hasn’t been aired yet. I can’t wait for next week already! Cookies for the writer. So yeah, tons of drama. But hey! We still managed to find our Kodak Moment inside, as you can see by the post pic. (Here’s one more btw:)

I would put a lolcatz banner around it and write sth like Why Poppo, why? but it seems like a lot of work for just a release post <_< and now that I’m in JP I’m working at late night I’m all “I can’t take it anymore!” since I prefer not to be dead the next day. Well, looks like I don’t get everything in life. Bi-quitting!
Nah jk, late-night kinda sucks but I’m not quitting with one more episode t[[[SITUATIONAL IRONY DETECTED; POST HAS BEEN CLOSED]]]
P.S.: Voraciously avid religion enthusiasts will probably rage at the fact that rebirth comes up in this episode, as well as our change from “attain Nirvana” to “go to heaven”, which not only turns Menma’s whole disappearing act into something of Christian rather than Buddhist significance but also spits in the face of many well known religious contexts. Whoops. My bad.
Honestly though, we kind of figured that we should do something when being reborn came up this episode, since attaining Nirvana -> becoming a Buddha -> can’t be reborn cuz you’re enlightened -> o noez paradox. So our answer is “go to heaven” and yes we will fix the previous resultant oopsies in the batch, don’t worry. Now you may want to complain that in a Christian context going to heaven is also an end-of-the-path action, but since we’ve already generalized heaven enough to be used acceptably within the Shinto-Buddhist context of Japanese religion I believe it can be just vague enough to be a suitable intermediary for whatever kind of rebirth they’re talking about. Besides, there’s already an angel and a ghost coexisting. I’m sure throwing in heaven can’t be that bad.
Disclaimer: No, I don’t study religion. If I’m terribly mistaken in some regard then leave a comment. If you are also a) stupid or b) retarded such that you didn’t understand the contents of this P.S., I am right and you are not because I am not stupid or retarded and you are one or both. Don’t comment. Enjoy your ghost girl animu.
Okay last one zZ: This is the site of some game that Raze mentioned. It is about a ghost. It is about a ghost who comes back. It is about a ghost who is a girl. It is about a ghost who was very close to the protagonist. It is about a ghost very few people could see. It is about a ghost… who is eerily similar to Menma.
DUN DUN DUUUUN…
So there you have it. Give it a look if you have some time, cuz I haven’t even clicked the link.

Comment on the rebirth part: not sure about Japanese version of Buddhism, but at least the Tibetans have no problem with rebirth after reaching enlightenment (i.e. becoming a Buddha). Actually they believe that when you reach enlightenment you can choose how and when to be reborn. The Dalai Lama is a Buddha, for example. And he doesn’t seem to have a problem being reborn.
Oh well enough of that – downloading new ep now – thanks for the work!

One word: “FARK!” My dreams of a JintaxAnaru thing might be coming to an end. T3T
Duly noted that the makers of “Ano Hana” didn’t mean to disrespect anyone from any religion with their story. Anyone who might get offended must understand that their way of life caused the death of millions during the “Crusades”.
PS: I am a Christian and I make it a matter of “life-or-death” not to offend/anger anyone with my beliefs.

    @ZxZ:
This ep is not much of a cliff hanger…Menma just didn’t make it to heaven and Jinta admitted that he’s in-love with a dead girl..so, yeah..ep 11 would just be a “Wrap-Up Episode”, where they’ll finally end all the pain. :)
@wouter: Actually, the Dalai Lama isn’t a buddha, but a manifestation of the bodhisattva of compassion; bodhisattvas being those who delay their own enlightenment to bring enlightenment to others.

great episode – as always thanks for all your work UTW. on a side note, couldn’t the “attain nirvana/go to heaven” thing be dealt with by using the religiously neutral “passing on”? – also there wouldn’t be a conflict between that and being reborn

  16. Ashitaka on June 17, 2011 at 5:22 pm said:

Thanks for the hard work guys. FYI, “rewinded” isn’t a word, it would be “rewound”…just in case you want to do a v2 for the batch.

hehehe… quite some effort you have put into this thread… and yeah, the whole “passing on,” “attaining nirvana” and “going to heaven thing” … it’s too funny because no religion really has “after you die, you will be reincarnated” so I understand your predicament… regardless, I have no complaints with how you’re been subbing this series so thanks for all the great work that you’ve been putting into this! THANKS AGAIN!

  18. Thanks for the subs guys. This show is just so good, I’m going to miss watching it.

  19. I only watched the first episode and was bawling my eyes out the whole time. I deleted the queued episodes I was gonna download, and swore I would never come back to this series. Are you now saying the (ghost) girl comes back!??? (to life I mean). I need an answer for my sanity and my piece of mind, really, let me in on the end game here, I loved it from the first minute but fuck me if I’m gonna relive a tragic piecing together of several people’s shattered lives. Can anyone shed light on this? Give me spoilers, give me whatever, just don’t tell me this is gonna be a bad end. Please?

I know this is kinda late to ask, but why use constant 23.937 FPS? I compare some fansub group(i don’t tell name to anon the problem) release with one of the share raws from Nyaa. the share raw got variable frame rate thus the way i see it some of the animations are lot smoother than the one that fansub release(no i’m not holding grudge nor want to mock fansub, in fact i appreciate the fansubber because they share anime not only for japan). Thank you

Regarding the P.S., I would’ve translated joubutsu etc as “pass on” or similar. I feel it gets the point across just as well, and relies a bit less on the watcher’s take on religious matters and what happens when you die.

What religious enthusiasts should think about is the fact that Japan lives in religious pluralty. They don’t live with strict distinctions between them and pick whatever they want from each of them. If you ask one, he/she would probably admit to believe in shinto, buddhism and christianity at the same time (although the last one might not be included). That said it’s totally fine to mix up the several terms for “going to heaven”, “nirvana” or whatsoever. It actually reflects the real life situation of religious egality in Japan. We should actually learn from them and chill out some more.

  42. shandris on June 18, 2011 at 7:29 pm said:

Whats the problem with religious beliefs u have here lol. It’s just an anime

  43. Padre on June 18, 2011 at 7:33 pm said:

I don’t see an issue with the terminology shifting. After all, the show never even mentioned Menma’s ghost in relation to religion. So folks are still free to try to fit the plot into their own views of religion (although for what reason they would want to see animu in that light is beyond me). As an atheist, I really wouldn’t have cared either way.

  44.
okay just watched the episode and the talk about rebirth was in a different context than what I was thinking. I’m good with the story now.
I have my BA in Religious Studies, and Japanese Religion in specific. My knowledge of Buddhist theology is admittedly a little incomplete though.
I see immediately where your confusion is coming from: “jyoubutsu (??) gets translated by my dictionary as all of 1)’attain nirvana’ , 2)’become a buddha’ , 3)’go to heaven’ , and 4)’die peacefully. From my (admittedly limited) understanding of traditional Buddhist theology, definitions 1 & 2 should be mutually exclusive in Japan. Nirvana can be arguably described as the cessation of everything, whereas Buddhahood *in the Mahayana tradition present in Japan* occurs in the present life and is separate from a final realm such as Heaven or nirvana.
The act of attaining enlightenment, which is generally seen as the requirement for ‘buddhahood’ (becoming a Buddha), is usually rendered in Japanese as satori (??). Heaven is generally rendered as tengoku (??). So what to do with a jyoubutsu that allows for rebirth? The anonymous poster above me is very correct to describe religion in Japan as a little ‘mixed up’; most people would likely be perfectly ok with the idea that you both attain the ultimate goal of Buddhism after death, and can still be reborn.
I think what it comes down to, is that nirvana is a perfectly valid means of translating jyoubutsu, but that it means something subtly different in the Japanese religious context than it does in other Buddhist settings. I don’t have a problem with you rendering it as ‘go to heaven’, since I think ‘Buddhist Heaven (ultimate goal)’ is a reasonable enough way of describing nirvana, but at the same time I don’t think it does any better a job at capturing the nuance. A Buddhist ‘heaven (non-ultimate goal)’, theologically, is very much a place where you can be reborn from, but this is almost certainly not the sort of heaven that is being referred to in the term jyoubutsu.
Unless you feel like inventing a new word to describe jyoubutsu to an English audience (which I don’t really like the sounds of :P), I think nirvana works at least as well as Heaven. Maybe if you feel like playing fast and loose with the translation “find peace” may work (‘rest in peace / die peacefully’ is another definition I get in my dictionary), it’s ambiguous enough to allow for the possibility of rebirth even it loses a little of its cultural pizazz.
Endnote:: as I look back and see how long this post has become, I feel inclined to thank you for reading this far, and to apologize for the inevitable stylistic errors that must have crept in. Thank you folks for the wonderful translation work thus far!

  48. SriBri on June 19, 2011 at 5:00 am said:

P.S. to the above:: I actually enjoyed writing that so much, that if anyone has any questions related to religion in Japan now or in the future, anime related or otherwise, I would love to answer them. A casual role as religious consultant to anime translators would tickle me pink too, but how often does religion really play a significant role in anime? (hint: all the good ones) ^_^

Well, no obviously not. But Menma was talking about it too, so unless we want to assume that all the characters are -that- poorly informed regarding their religious traditions, there are some issues to work out.

How about using crossing over/cross over (to the other side) rather than going to heaven or attain nirvana. They say spirits are bound to this world until whatever troubles bind them are settled and then they cross over to the other side.
    And yea, Yadomi needs to stop doing that to poor Anaru. ;_;

Psh, a ghost similar to Menma? I instantly thought “Fuko” when I saw Menma for the first time. It seems as if the “ghost-girl-who-is-only-visible-and-audible-to-certain-people” is becoming a serious trope.

I must say, the creepiest part of this episode was how
Menma wrote in diary: “Menma will go to heaven tomorrow.”
It is like the guro-hentai on certain boards, expect without the sex and porn and there’s actually people who react to suicide-by-rocket a bit more normally than “YAY! MENMA GOES TO HEAVEN, YAY!”
