It is my great pleasure to present to you, at long last, the first episode of Carnival Phantasm, in celebration of Type-Moon’s 10th anniversary. And what a way to celebrate the occasion! Really good stuff, especially if you’re a Type-Moon fag like me (I’m still expecting the release of Mahoyo sometime before the world ends, TM…).
There was a lot of typesetting to do in this episode, and ar simply wouldn’t accept our releasing this without all signs done to the maximum possible :effort: and aesthetic appeal, so… three typesetters in all (ar, Bob64, and fnord) got to work. All three of them (ar in particular) put in a lot of time and effort, which I’m sure shows through in this release.
You can probably expect a Carnival Phantasm release once every few days, depending on our schedules. I will end by saying, though, that the second episode is the stuff of legends.

I have to admit, I feel priveledge to have at least watched 2 of the anime based on typemoon novels. This shows just a riot! Also, the ending was absolute gold. Keep them coming!

You’re better off playing through the visual novels of Tsukihime and Fate/Stay Night (as well as Fate/Hollow Ataraxia and Melty Blood by the look of the character lineup) than watching the animes. The F/SN anime and movie condense (and in the animes case change) a lot of the story out of necessity, thereby missing a lot of the awesomeness. With regards to Tsukihime, people may try and direct you to an anime calling itself Tsukihime however that is in fact a giant steaming turd in anime form and has nothing to do with the visual novel, there is no Tsukihime anime.
Is the commentary just regular commentary from those involved just using the character voices, or is it supposed to be the characters themselves commenting on the events?

I think it’s OK if you haven’t seen/read any of them but some jokes will go over your head, and I doubt it will be as enjoyable since you won’t know any of the characters.
I guess I shouldn’t watch it then.

By what I see you should also at least familiarize yourself not just with Tsukihime, Fate/Stay Night and Melty Blood, but also with Kagetsu Tohya and Fate/Hollow Ataraxia. Either way, having at least a competent knowledge of the VN’s is the only way you’ll be able to catch much of the references.
That said, unless you’re that adamant about not stealing (hence seeking out hard to find and expensive PC games) all the games I’ve mentioned, except Hollow Ataraxia have fan translations. There’s even an incomplete Fate/Stay Night Realta Nua patch for adding new music and CG’s to the PC game.
You guys going to do Fate/Zero next season by any chance?

So if you haven’t at least completed the VNs Tsukihime, and Fate/Stay Night, then you shouldn’t bother watching this.
You really should finish the following:
Tsukihime(VN), Tsukihime Plus+Disc(VN), Kagetsu Tohya(VN), Fate/Stay Night(VN), Fate/Zero(novel), Fate/Hollow ataraxia(VN), and Melty Blood(Fighting game);
If you want to be able to enjoy this to the fullest.
Anyways, I’m 99% positive that Fate/Zero is going to be translated by UTW. It wouldn’t make sense otherwise. Since this is, you know, a fansub group influenced by Type-Moon judging by the group’s name.

It’s kinda sad that Gate of Babylon looks better in Carnival Phantasm than it does in the Unlimited Blade Works movie.

Aww they changed most on the original voice cast for Tsukihime. I so wanted to hear Nabatame Hitomi for Arcueid and it would have been funny to hear Kohaku speak to Tohsaka had they left Ueda Kana for both roles.
On a side note, how’s the batch coming along for Ano Hana? I’ve been eagerly awaiting its release for a while now. Its been quite some time since you guys said it would come out. Anyways, thanks a lot for your effort in releasing this lovely OVA.

Unless your raws match ours frame-by-frame, theres a high chance that our typesetting will look like shit due to the huge amounts of acceleration (and thus, frame by frame signs).

Ren and Len are both acceptable as far as I’ve seen. It’s similar to how Ilya and Illya are both used officially.

DLed 10bit RAWs from Zero-Raws and did notice less banding (though that’s not compared to UTW’s release here; from earlier releases elsewhere).

Well, best not to mention THAT anime when there are hardcore Type Moon fans around, cause watching it is like watching the Sunrise version of IdolMaster. It is something most people want to forget existed.
And I would think ufotable would be good, since they have done Kara no Kyoukai excellently. Sides, watching the trailers, I already have high expectations for the Fate/Zero anime.

For those who compare the (nonexistent 🙂 ) Tsukihime anime, it wasn’t bad. Battles were not given the epicness they deserverd. Chaos was defeated to easily. The “happy” memories scene with Akiha, Shiki and Hisui playing on the backyard while Kohaku was happily looking from the window seems offensive if you know her backstory from the VN. The infamous multiple date with Ciel,Arcueid,Ahiha and Sacchin.. The soundtrack was excellent and fitting, good voices and the adaptation wise was more or less decent for 13 eps, and is the only nice storyline ever given for poor Sacchin, who had hellish endings on official material. It seems she is the ButtMonkey on Carnival too. Isn’t it sad Sacchin…
Even if a self parody, the scenes with Shinji/Rider and the ending with Sakura and Shinji side by side were cringe worthy for me because Shinji is such a monster.. Weak, spineless, rapist.. Kotomine’s “I like Evil” nature is nice in comparison.. The Chibi Matou Zouken on one still screen along with Chibi-True Assassin with Dark Sakura was nicer than I thought was possible for a complete monster/magnificent bastard.
Knowing too much of the VNs can make some scenes feel weird.. But Ciel Sensei’s and Taiga’ Dojo spots were already self parodies on the original VNs, but if I only saw the anime versions, a lot of stuff would feel disrespectful toward the characters. Just like the Akane Maniax OVAs after Kimi Nozomu Eien anime.
And I have to said this: RIN – SAMA allow me to be your slave!!!. Best Tsundere/Tsukomi EVER!!! Arcueid is the best goofy easy going girl ever too.

It pale in comparison with the whole story. Not the best execution, but saying it sucked is too much. But there is nothing which can prevent a remake, just like Kanon recieve a 24 ep anime KyoAni years later after the 13 ep Toei version.
But personally as much as I like Arcueid, I would prefer Far side of the Moon stories. For best drama impact, Hisui’s True End would be great. Although Akiha’s storyline has better cinematographic appeal. Ciel’s route also has some amazing fights, but story wise I would definitely prefer Hisui’s True storyline.
But I’m somewhat surprised that Studio Deen’s bleeched underpants version of Sex with Saber (3D CGI Dragon) and Sex with Rin(Nice 3D Dolphins) are so criticized but the blatantly obvious sex between Shiki and Arcueid in Lunar Legend Tsukihime (Full name for haters) is overlooked. It wasn’t taken out of the story unlike Studio Deen’s versions of FSN.
There have also been rumors for years of a Type Moon remake of Tsukihime on VN format being stuck on development hell.
Just wait a little longer and you’ll have more Tsukihime.

Please get your eyes checked asap.
Here I did a comparison between my (UTW’s) encode from the BD and the jp-raws we kept on rejecting before. I picked 2 particularly dark/bad frames and screened them. Our’s isn’t perfect, but imho for the size, bitrate & the fact it’s still an 8-bit encode i’d definitely say they are miles apart.

DAT HORY GLAIL SUN. So much aliasing in the raw. 😐
Some lines ended up kind of oversmoothed (see the division between Goldy’s hair and air — it has a DBZ-like glow. OMG, he’s a Super Saiyan! …not.), but given the general quarity of the raw’s screenshots, I assume nothing could be done about it. Given your encode doesn’t have the macroblocking (no, seriously, what the shit? At first I thought the raw screenshot was a debatable-quality JPG…) and the crazy over-the-top aliasing seen on the raw, I assume either the raw encoder has no clue what he’s doing, or you’ve just done :magic: to fix this BD (probably the latter, possibly both). Berserker’s arm veins aren’t any better, and in the dark areas of the raw’s screenshot there’s more noise than actual image.
Seriously, they’re selling that kind of shit as full hd? 😐
I’m not entirely sure why, but this is the first time in a long time that I cannot seem to get the audio to work (that includes other UTW releases).. any ideas? I checked the internal filters and such in mplayer and no dice.

Actually I didn’t do much filtering at all, just darkened the lines a little bit and added a dither to prevent it banding up any worse than the BD (which mind you was pretty good). Yeah they added a fair bit of noise, but that’s kinda expected to stop the video from banding when they encode it from their 10-bit master to a 8-bit h264 for the blu-ray.

You do realize thats encoded at crf27 lol and a re-encode of our 8-bit 1080p (which was encoded with crf 17) at that…. Good god. It might as well be a web stream for that quality haha.

I’m still trying to wrap my head around sexy Fuji-nee at the 1min mark in the intro.
Check this shit out. Pause at the scene where it shows the audience at 4:07, look at the top row, second person from the left. You can see the bottom half of Shiki Ryougi. In this same scene, look at the far right of the row Arcueid is sitting in. You can see the three girls that Rin speaks to in the prologue of F/SN sitting together.
The scene transition at 6:45 leads me to believe that sella, leysritt, issei, and mitsuzuri are also present at some point in the episode.
Hmm, it kinda seems like Ryougi but it’s only the bottom so who knows (not to mention they don’t have KnK on the credits, only the Tsukihime series, Fate series and Melty Blood). As far as I could tell the whole scene transition picture parts was just a way of showing all the Fate characters without having to actually add them (after all, they didn’t even show the rightfull masters of two Servants and True Assasin was a no-show).
