So this series was infinitely stalled due to Moshi’s new life taking priority over subbing cartoons, but he is slowly making progress with the translations. We’ve got up to episode 3 translated so far so once 2 & 3 are qc’d/edited we’ll go ahead and release those too.
We’ve changed a bunch of names to reflect the Archives booklets that came with the Blu-rays, so what you have now can be considered pretty much official, except for “Dunan Nut”, we don’t like that (lol) so we’ll stick to using Deunan Knute.
The audio for both the 720p and 1080p comes from the DTS-HD MA 5.1 track so I just threw FLAC at both. There’s a ton of grain/action in episodes 1-3 so deal with the size. The size falls with episodes 4 & 5 to more reasonable sizes.
Here’s a few words from our sponsors.
kusion: wtf is appleseed <- le sigh
commander`A: American Movies > Chinese cartoons <- he can't be saved!
Also, huge thanks to Tek for helping making this release possible!

  2. ar, seriously? i’m chinese-american and even i say chinese cartoons suck big time balls (mostly cuz i hate communists, but then again, i hate the chinese government in general anyway) and i watch american movies and i think there’s no comparison, period.

Sweeet! Can’t stop laughing at Dunan Nut…

  4. @Cat
I say chinese cartoons suck too, but Lollywood movies these days are pretty terrible. I love the older Hollywood films, just not many of the new ones.

  5. Ohh.. Cool!!!! Looking forward to the rest. ^_^
Thank you, __ar, for encoding this fantastic series into such awesome quality. 😀

Chinese cartoons is supposed to be a synonym for Japanese anime afaik.
    @ar
Thank you so much! Btw, are you guys still planning to do the Fractale BDs?

  8. @herpes
Yeah Fractale BD’s are ready to release spare Episode 9, which we’re waiting on Moshi to translate some new lines they added and fix up the insert song translation. Soon as he gets that done we’ll throw them out.

  9. @ar
Fucking glad to hear that. Thanks a bunch!

  11. ^shit forgot ma post…
looks like someone is growing up ;_; it’s too bad life is going to ream him, which will make him realize how shitty hollywood films really are forcing him to once again take solace in the glory of the people’s republic animation, that is unless he’s encoding for the scene

Any chance at a hi10p encode? The few episodes I’ve managed to get my hands on in the new format already have me sold, and is well worth the effort.

  13. @Iranai_Nandeyane
There’s practically no benefit for this series in 10-bit since half the bitrate is consumed by grain. It may save 100-200mb max per episode, if that. I’ll consider it later on if I have time to do tests and they turn out to be beneficial, for now doing 3 versions (1080p 8-bit+720p 8-bit+XviD 8-bit) is more than enough for me to deal with. If I decide to do 10-bit it will only be the 1080p, and if that uses similar bitrate to the 8-bit version you’re going to have some problems playing it back cpu-wise.

  14. Yeah.. there have been talk about 10bit lately. UTW doesn’t seem to bother it. Other groups are like “we’re doing 10bit from now.” or something. They didn’t have to make such rush. Dammit!!! XD

  15. @All
10-bit releases will come when CoreAVC 3.0 comes out pretty much. Until then I don’t really have the desire to be releasing 10-bit releases, even though I’ve done a bunch of 10-bit encodes for myself over the past 4 or 5 months.

  16. OMG, why couldn’t you guys release this a few days earlier. I went and watched your earlier release not too long ago damnit!!
    O well xD I’ll just re-watch this awesome BD-ness

  17. So is UTW going to do this series to completion? Alot of big name groups (no names) have been starting and not finishing series over the past year or so (haven’t seen UTW do that but I want to make sure of UTW’s intentions). I don’t want to invest time, bandwidth, hdd space if it isn’t going to be completed. On a side note, CoreAVC 3.0 is being released tomorrow.

  18. I’d personally much prefer that 10-bit encodes wait until XBMC supports it, but so long as there’s also an 8-bit 720p version I think doing Hi10P 1080p is fine. The problem with other groups is it’s either Hi10P or nothing at all …
XBMC could support Hi10P now (software-only of course – I don’t think even CoreAVC 3.0 will be able to support it on the video card since it needs PureVideo support). Unfortunately it looks like the XBMC devs are waiting to merge ffmpeg until just before the next release … so sometime around December 30.

  19. @Anon
Yes I read about CoreAVC 3.0 being released in the next few days, but considering there is other bugs they might need to sort out first it could be delayed. As long as it’s out by next season’s start that’s fine. I don’t plan on starting any projects with both 8/10-bit until then anyway since I’ve already encoded a lot of eps for the ones I’m working on in 8-bit.
Take Appleseed, I’ve already got upto episode 5 encoded. And yes we plan on finishing it to completion provided they don’t stop selling the series from bad sales. The Blu-ray’s won’t be finished releasing until next January anyway.

  22. Thanks, guys. I can forgive someone not knowing about Appleseed, but being a troll and calling Japanese people Chinese… (Unless he literally is talking about Chinese animation. In which case, I’d have to agree. Them plagiarizing 5cm was pretty lame.) I blame this dystopia and apathy on the internet.
By the way, tell commander`A that koda is looking for him. We all know that trolls need to stick together.

  23. @ar and movies whatnot:
like it’s really different with dem chinese cartoons. It’s more or less similar percentage that’s not hilariously bad / boring.

Any chance of seeing 480p h264 instead of XviD ?.
Really don’t like XviD due to the burnt in subtitles and increased bitrate to show them.

  25. Thanks, glad to see that Shirow’s ideas still live one way or another.

May I inquire on the status of AnoHana’s batch progress? I’m really looking forward to watching the series and a batch release would be awesome right about now. @_@

  27. Wow – what a disappointment. Truly crappy CG animation, stilted movement, abominable character design … and a storyline that only makes some kind of sense to someone (like me) who has seen and read every Appleseed thing that’s been released in English.
I wasn’t that keen on what they did to the animation and character designs in the Appleseed movie some years back. But obviously someone looked at that and went “I know – let’s do more of that, but worse!”.

  29. Every UTW release I ever downloaded I watched as DXVA-accelerated by CoreAVC on my PowerColor HD4670 1GB DDR3 AGP videocard + 2.4GHz Celeron CPU.
I guess the 10bit age finally starts, so in order to stay with UTW I’ll have to get a new CPU (preferably dualcore), a new motherboard, a new set of memory chips, a new video card, and to install from the scratch the whole set of software: OS, file manager, unpackers, codecs, browsers, a web server, PHP, audio editor, icon editor, keyboard layouts, DVD burners, virtual drives, dictionaries, LibreOffice, plain text editors, emulators, download manager, audio drivers, video drivers, DirectX update, antivirus, flash player, PDF readers, mobile sync manager, graphics editor, video player, IRC client, e-mail client, clipboard demon, SSH client, Skype, CVS client, SVN client, system tray manager, torrent downloader, audio player, font editor and such.
    WHAT A PAIN!

  30. THAT IS EXACTLY WHY I HATE UPGRADES SO MUCH.

  31. @Mithgol
Well we’ll still be doing 8-bit releases first next season. 10-bit take too long to encode so they’ll always come second, either same day or next day.

  32. Well, now that’s a relief, if you are planning all that as careful as some of the existing solutions, such as the current http://m33w-fansubs.com/ releases (HD and Hi10p as separate options), that’s wise. (Quite the contrary, if 1080p suddenly becomes 10bit-only, and 8bits are 720p or less, that would be unfortunate.)
And I am reasonably afraid that you won’t support five choices (1080p8bit, 1080p10bit, 720p8bit, 720p10bit, SD) because of too much workload (if I were you, I won’t, that is).
And when you consider dropping some of the five, please keep the precious 1080p8bit; you may start with dropping one of 10 bit options: either 1080p10bit (as it requires a lot of CPU cycles, more than any other of five options), or 720p10bit (as of inferior quality: 10bit video fans should have some modern CPU able to run 1080p10bit anyway), it depends on the reasoning.

  33. RevoHD group releases 1080p in 10bit and 720p in 8bit («Mardock Scramble» is an exception since that was just a remux), and that choice is, well, disappointing. It almost says «8bit is the new XviD».

  34. @Mithgol
Personally I’d rather just do 1 resolution (whichever I think is appropriate for the show) and call it a day, but people refuse to upgrade their pc’s or have download limits or think their cartoons shouldn’t be more than 200mb or that XviD is still the greatest encoder ever yada yada, and then I have to waste more of my time to cater for all the difficult people. Le sigh.
