Reading Scanlations Teaches You Japanese!

This group is so good, I dare not utter their name. Thought I’d pick up Nozoki Ana today because Raze said it was fucking awesome, and I have to agree. Good series always get good groups, and I’ll be showing you an example of good scanlating.

1.

Fantastic editing right here!

"KOTOBORI-SAN SAID MY HOME IS 2 STATION AWAY FWOM DERE"

Brilliant use of English which closely resembles how Japanese people speak English! Uh, Engrish*
2
engrish

Fantastic, but could do better.

I liked how the words are left untranslated, but it could be further improved if you edited the top left bubble as “II DESU, OJAMASHIMASU” “WOW, SOREWA SUTEKI ROOM!?”, so that it’ll resemble native Japanese speech more closely.

derp

Needed to be much longer.

But if you’re gonna leave 90% of the scanlation in Japanese, you’ll need really long TL Note pages. I recommend about 4-5 full A4 pages. 7 is probably the max you’d look at. If possible, include the full Wikipedia page there too.

Definitely not Japanese enough.

Like I said earlier, translations should stick to the original Japanese as close as possible so you don’t “ruin” the manga.
“Watashi started doing a paato-taimu job”,”Irashaimase”, and “Soshite, watashi go back to ano room late at night” should be sufficient.

Kana SFX FTW

The scanlation group obviously knows what they mean, but they left them untranslated so we could practice our kana.

Engrish is too advanced for me

Simply fabulous. The edited line is so good, I can’t even interpret it properly.

OHAYOUGOZAIMASU INDEED

They go the extra mile to teach us Japanese! <3

I liked this.

I liked this.

I liked what you did there, but poor font choice for ”ね?”
I’d like to post more screenshots, but I’m getting kinda sleepy. If EighthSin were to review this group, I’m sure they would get very high results.
Most text was kept as close as possible to the Japanese, and whatever had to be translated into English was translated instead to Engrish (Which is what 80% of Japan speak. It’s more natural that way). I recommend this group for whatever manga you read.
Great job, guys. Very impressive work.

Whats the problem with leaving uniquely Japanese parts in Japanese? Like you’d ever hear/say ‘excuse me for disturbing you’ in English whenever you/someone you know enters a room outside of formal occasions. It’s not like anyone who is reading scanlated manga is likely to be completely unfamiliar with the language and customs. That said 5 pages of TL notes is a bit much I guess.
So I guess we’re gonna be seeing more of Miya addressing Junichi as ‘elder brother elder brother’ in future episodes of Sweet Bite SS+?

Yeah… if you’re still at the level where you feel only the literal meaning may be conveyed, you’re probably best sticking to technical translation where precision is vastly more important than style.
Bear in mind, though, that the author of this manga wrote it in idiomatic, natural language and that’s how it was presented to its original audience. I can only speak for myself, but I find it tremendously disrespectful to the author if a translator doesn’t bend over backwards to render the work as a whole into English in the most similar manner he or she can manage. Especially if they’re doing so without permission.
This is no different from Mercier Lewis’s hack job of Twenty Thousand Leagues, only instead of political censorship etc. the translator here has some bizarre vendetta against the English language itself.
    .
Also: Nice appeal to ridicule there. It’s almost like you believe (sibling) honorifics can only be translated “literally”, but this rule doesn’t apply to the rest of the Japanese language.

Not what I was going for with the sarcasm, I’m learning Japanese myself so I know theres a line between translation and literal translation. Just found it a bit odd that, for example, with the dig at leaving おじゃまします (ojamashimasu) as romaji when it has such a variety of ways to be said in english was coming from a member of a group that preserve honourifics and terms of address in translation when the comment I mentioned is an equally frequently used term.

Honestly, I personally think that subs (just like with everything else in life), requires balance. You can’t have it too localized (changing the original content), nor have it too un-localized (unintelligible to the English speaking crowd).
Though, I have always been curious… What do people have against honorifics? It’s not like them being there in the subs will seriously confuse the average viewer. English purists? American patriots? Hate for the sake of hating?

  49. Even I, who advocates a more literal translation approach, thinks that this is too much. As a general rule for myself, I think that the only things that should be left untranslated are names (Sakura), nicknames (Takkun) , food names (Taiyaki, Takoyaki) and titles (sensei, Onii-chan). Anything else should be looked at on a case by case basis.
@ Force Gaia: I don’t know where the hate for tv-nihon comes from. Aside from the unconventional honorifics (~tachi, etc…), their sub quality is actually pretty accurate.

  50. I also forgot to add that currency (yen) and culturally unique terms (Otaku, Moe, Tsundere) should be left as is as well, because those terms describe and represent something that the English language just cannot do precisely and concisely enough.
.For you English purists out there, interestingly enough, we can also see that such specific Japanese terms like Otaku are indeed making their way into the English language:
    http://oxforddictionaries.com/definition/otaku?q=otaku
Come to think of it, English is a language that isn’t really ‘pure’. It is constantly evolving and has already borrowed words and phrases from countless other languages, Tsunami, Escargot, Spaghetti, etc…

You’ll find that the vast majority of people make a habit out of over-reacting to things that others find largely insignificant. I mean seriously, it’s three or four letters and a hyphen. You don’t gain anything from having them there, nor you do you gain anything from taking them out. Whether they’re there or not is nothing more than the personal preference of the translator. You’d think people would be more worried with actual translation errors or sentence structure, you know, things that MATTER.

Sure, you might argue that among siblings in the western world you’re using the given name, but my problem with that is when I clearly hear that the name is NOT said and then I see it in the subtitles. Distracting.

    – The screenshots are from earlier volumes of Nozoki Ana, and they weren’t scanlated by Japanzai (you can find this info if you go to bakaupdates).
Also, to those who miss XscanX:
    – XscanX & japanzai were 2 different scanlation groups but they joined and became one under the name of Japanzai (XscanX forum link on bakaupdates point to japanzai’s homepage).
P/S: UTW is my fav fansubbing group but what’s with all the drama on fansubbing & scanlating scenes lately? Can’t people just live peacefully? @red CODE, you’re forgetting about vital matter. Scanlating is a little bit different from fansubbing. There are 20-50 new shows every season + some long runners and ovas, over all there’s probably no time when there are 100 series at once. While with manga, there are hundreds, if not thousands on-going. There’s also different mindset of scanlators and fansubbers.
Point is, if one group scanlates manga XYZ, another group won’t touch it. There are no alternatives like, let’s say, AniYoshi vs Commie vs CTSS vs HorribleSubs vs Taka vs Underwater vs WhyNot. Readers have no choice, they can’t choose another group with different policies (liberal vs literal etc.). That’s why quality of scans is so important. No one is going to provide an alternative or edit mistakes in batch, there are too many titles on-going to bother with it.

  65. red CODE on March 7, 2012 at 7:22 pm said:

Oops, I forgot that rule about only 1 group is allowed to scanlate a particular manga at one time.
But my point is can we just stop with the drama? Like what is happening right now with Deathtoll & Dragonfly Scans over Cage of Eden (Red Hawk left COD to Dragonfly
    http://www.redhawkscans.com/showthread.php?4056-Cage-of-Eden-Chapter-100-by-Red-Hawk-Dropped&highlight=cage+eden
but Dragonfly translated it like Sh!t, then Deathtoll suddenly started translating COD, with good quality, and insulting Dragonfly
=> now the two groups compete with each other endlessly, but Deathtoll Scans has always scanlated better than Dragonfly).
    P/S: again, I’m not in any scanlating/fansubbing group. Just a leecher’s opinion.

Shitty translation is shitty. Those pseudo-translations are more painful than a kick to my balls.
I’m in favor of translating everything, there is no such thing as a word without a translation. If you need more than one word to translate, so be it. Will it fell a little weird? Maybe, but the person behind the screen knows s/he is watching an anime, which is a japanese production, hence they have their own way of doing and saying things. That’s just normal. This gives you that feeling of something coming from Japan and not from EUA.
The only thing I can understand leaving in the translated lines are honorifics, they don’t bother me. Yet I experienced how this can be confusing to someone who doesn’t know what they mean and I’m considering my concepts again.
Don’t be fucking selfish, you may know some japanese here and there but some people don’t. Translations should be understandable by anyone trying to read it.

  69. fucking A+ fgg, would troll again. Now if only i had the staff to completely strip shitpanzai of all their projects.

  70. @boingman
Depending on context it is perfectly fine to put the name instead of “Oniichan”. What you do when translating is conveying the meaning of what is said in the source language as close as possible. In addition to that, phrasings are supposed to feel natural and have a good flow.
For instance, in my country(and yours probably as well) it’d be really weird if one’s younger sister addressed her brother with “Brother” all the time, since siblings usually address each other with their first names.
Another example are honorifics. For a fan translator it’s more or less a matter of preference, since you can assume that the audience is aware of respective meanings. However, there might be people who do not. When you aren’t fan translating, it’s most likely the case that the majority of the audience doesn’t. The usual route you take then is “transcribing” honorifics. That process also includes cases where you ignore specific typs of honorifics. Here consistency plays a major part and is not to be neglected.
And well, in reply to this post. Well of course the translation is shit. Even if the translator thought it’d be better/cool whatever to put in untranslated lines in romanji, it doesn’t change the fact that it violates both the english and japanese language.

SCANLATION = original text removed and replaced with new text. no need to worry about seeing 2 different words at once. Confusion ensues when translations do not conform to new texts grammer/spelling rules

Confusion ensues when watcher FINALLY learns some of the spoken language and spoken/text re different. (onii-san=brother yet replaced with given name).

    @Nayu:
It obviously wouldn’t bother me as much if we were talking about a dub.

You guys are embarrassing yourselves. The early chapters of Nozoki Ana weren’t even translated by Japanzai. They just keep the older volumes on their website.

Lol. Just be happy someone is translating it. Whether the translation is bad or not its still somewhat being translated and delivered to the readers and the readers still read it regardless how bad the translation is. If you cant stand how bad the translation is then dont read it. Make yourself a group and translate it yourself or help the group thats doing it to make improvements. Oh well this post is funny…. Lol
