9:48 “Chaged” instead of “chaNged” =p Thanks, for the ep.

34. At 09:48 (typo aside), shouldn’t that be “Changed into” be “Changed from?”

Ha I found that Changed Into Immortal Object typo (by the studio) hilarious.
Good ep, but anyone else find that how Kirito discovered Heathcliff’s identity a little too deus-ex-machina- like? I mean in the LN his thoughts were explained before he charged towards Heathcliff, but in the anime its just a glance and then charge.
ANd as always thanks UTW!

Once again a great episode, although they shorten a couple of parts from the LN like how Kirito notice Heathcliff was Kayaba Akihiko this part in the LN shows what Kirito was thinking but it can’t be put into the anime as it would take way too long. The way the studio put this episode together was still awesome though and SAO is still one of the best out there this whole season (IMO) Much better then Accel World though they are created by the same person. Either way next up is ALO in “Fairy Dance” and can’t wait to watch it!

(Twisted amusement at the system message along with other commentors, ‘changed into mortal object’ in the novel translation and ‘Chaged into Immortal Object’ in the anime. I wonder if they’ll fix that for the non-broadcast version? Disconcerting given how good the overall production quality is. *remembers the matter of the blacksmith’s name, as well*)

77. BlackPenguin on October 7, 2012 at 1:15 pm said:

@storrm
The premise of the anime was indeed very good, however it went downhill when it focused to much on the Kirito x Asuna idea. I would’ve liked to see an MMORPG in anime form, without the unnecessary drama.
Don’t get me wrong, it’s still great, but I believe they went to far on the whole love thing.

78. o____________o
I HATE YOU UTW.
I go without downloading without anime for one day, and you come out with THREE RELEASES BEHIND MY BACK?!?!!?

I am nowhere near this far in the LN, so I am so confused right now, how can the series continue? XD. Guess I’ll see, do not tell me! XD. This episode was so epic though. At first I was like, no f****** way can Asuna die, I will hurt something if she does o-o. Then when Kirito died I was like…yup okay, something weird is going to happen : /. But Kirito better find Asuna :(.

81. littleogre on October 7, 2012 at 3:59 pm said:

@JokerGist: I won’t give you any spoilers, but you won’t be disappointed by the second arc. You will probably like it even more than the first arc.

82. littleogre on October 7, 2012 at 4:05 pm said:

@Reaver: He didn’t use the 16-hits combo “Starburst Stream” when he panicked, he used a 27-hits combo skill (the highest level dual wield skill) called “The Eclipse”, and even before it started to take effect he regretted it, because he knew Akihiba would block all hits and kill him while he was stunned.

Spoilers:
Again, these miracles of improbability are getting on my nerves. If Asuna died, she should stay dead. If Kirito died, he should have stayed dead.
Also, I really didn’t expect them to clear the game so early in the series. Like, what else is there to do? I suppose it’s cool not knowing what’s in store for the next third of the series, but still. ๐Ÿ˜ก

85. littleogre on October 7, 2012 at 4:41 pm said:

@Shawn263241: Their survival wasn’t a miracle of improbability at all. It was by Akihiba’s design. He wanted the Kirito alive for his own motives, which are partially explained later. Asuna he most likely spared to avoid Kirito to become too depressed and useless to be useful.

93. With 12 episodes left, how short are they going to me ALO and possibly GGO? I await to see this.

94. The standard for Accel World is 5 eps/book, and this seems to hold (relatively) true for SAO as well. The side stories from book 2 are exactly 5 episodes, and I’d guess that it’s around the same for book 1 as well, with maybe one extra episode.
Ten episodes remaining (or even 11) is perfect to fit in ALO.

If I’m the studio head, I’m thinking about GGO + Caliber for 2013, and Alicization for 2014, with a feature-length release for Mother’s Rosario in-between. Gawd, there’s plenty of OVA material too. Dare we hope for a live-action film? Seriously, I’m buying EVERYTHING I can lay my hands on in the US market for this set of stories. It deserves to be a monster success.

Can someone just tell me the link to this next arc isn’t forced and actially makes sense. I see a lot of potential to screw things up if they just make the next arc a reboot of sao in a new game. Hearing vague spoilers from the next arc have probably confused me and it’ll all be fine.
Also I think there should be a big fat spoiler warning at the top of comments. UTW comments=spoilers

101. Kazeto on October 7, 2012 at 9:34 pm said:

@Mr Unicorn:
Well, it sort of makes sense:
Sword Art Online as a game is completed, and someone who worked under Kayaba helped with making a game called Alfheim Online on SAO’s engine. Only the guy had problems related to the fact that Kayaba was recognized while he was not, and thus he abducted some of SAO’s players to “conduct research” on them in ALO, whatever he meant by that; he also imprisoned Asuna as the game’s “princess” because she is his fiancee and he felt entitled.
And overall the guy is a poor villain, not really worthy of recognition (and you can see where this is going because he pretty much did it for recognition), but the game mechanics and various plot points are worth it (in my opinion, at least, and it’s not like you can’t have a villain who is weaker than he himself wanted to be and sill have it be interesting).
102. inillortep on October 7, 2012 at 10:15 pm said:

@man00ver I was thinking the same thing about GGO being in the works when I saw those names. Especially that one.

103. @Linkmstr
I’m suspecting that the WinXP backend has a bug with the Wasco Sans font used in this episode, considering it affects all versions new and old of VSFilter as well as the MPC-HC ISR, but only on WinXP, only with this font, and only when rendering at a certain font size range. You already opened a bug report http://code.google.com/p/xy-vsfilter/issues/detail?id=122 , but as stated there, if this is a WinXP bug and not a VSFilter bug, there may be nothing which could be done to fix it short of changing the font used, upgrading your OS, or reporting the issue to Microsoft. We won’t know for sure until our dev has time to look into it in a couple weeks time.

104. JokerGist on October 7, 2012 at 10:25 pm said:

@Shawn263241 My guess is that, upon game clearance, anyone who died within the last 10 minutes were allowed to live or something (based on logic of the whole item which can bring player back to life within 10 minutes after death thing). Or perhaps the people (within 10 minute thing still), who were in the zone of the game clearance were allowed to live.

105. @Shawn263241 I don’t understand how people do not get this. There was a thread on /a/ where everyone was raging about this exact issue, when it’s not an issue at all and makes perfect sense. Remember back at the start of the series with the Red nosed Reindeer episode. An item existed which could revive someone within a certain amount of time after their death. For this to be able to work, there must be a delay between when your avatar dies and Nervgear fries your brain. As a reward for completing the game Kayaba Akihiko allowed both Kirito and Asuna to live, both had a part in defeating Kayaba Akihiko, so both were able to get the reward. Plus Kayaba Akihiko may have had a side reason for this, as is explained later on.

106. JokerGist on October 7, 2012 at 10:44 pm said:

@Alex, That’s what I was trying to say more or less, that was one of my theories anyway, but I wasn’t sure if Asuna would have counted, so I expanded the theory to include people in the zone of the clearance in general.

109. JustusR on October 7, 2012 at 11:25 pm said:

@MagicPower The next arc is about unrequited incest, unless the anime producers do some extensive rewriting.

110. @Sylthfarn
ALO might be 2 volumes long but there isn’t that much too it overall compared to volumes 1-2. Its mostly action scenes and set-pieces. 10-11 episodes is perfect at a brisk pace. Any slower and it might honestly start to feel like its dragging.

@inillortep Woah, is that legit? It looks like Asuna is either dead or in a bad medical state, it better be the latter -_-.

Yeah, my question was to get there: if someone knew the name of the new songs. Thanks, @man00ver and @inillortep
She isn’t dead. She just didn’t come back along with 200 other players. Discovering why and bringing her back is the main plot line of the second arc.
@Alex and JokerGist: Pretty sure the time limit was a lot less than 10 minutes. I could be wrong, but that sounds like way too much leeway. Asuna would have been fried before Kirito was actually able to kill Kayaba. Even if he wanted to keep her alive, I doubt he would be able to make changes to the code instantaneously like that. But what do I know, I’ve only seen these 14 episodes of the abridged story.
@Littleogre: dammit, I should have known not to click on that spoiler tag. How do you even make those?

120. @Shawn263241 I said “within a certain amount of time” Because I couldn’t remember the exact amount of time, I didn’t specify 10 minutes. Looking through the novel the time was approx 10 seconds. Thinking back to the fight in the anime it is hard to believe that everything happened within the 10 seconds but, in the LNs the fight happened pretty quickly. From Asunas death to Kiritos death was approx 4-5 pages, most of which was inner thought so it is still possible, although 10 seconds is still a stretch.

As much as I enjoy the series thus far, I really feel that the limited episode constraint really cripples the series as a whole. Characters, for the most part, were uninteresting and flat, development was nil, and the story flew by me before I really got into it. Things just happen; it’s all just eye candy. For example, near the end, you could tell that they tried to fit some character development in, but it was too little, too late. I apologize for my negativity, the series is good, but I just feel that it could have been done much better. Anyways, an appreciative thanks to UTWoots for subbing this series and I will definitely continue to support you guys down the road.

We know the consciousnesses of both Kirito and Asuna survived the End of the World, because they watched it happen from the glassy plane. How and why they did, we don’t (maybe yet) know, but there are a couple of ideas (and probably more) that could maintain the “hard science fiction” coherence of the story. Though these are guesses, at least one of them is informed by what I know of the LNs, so I’ll use SPOILER tags:
1. Cardinal may have modified the “death rules” for participants of the Ultimate Boss Fight
2. Someone at Argus intervened (pretty likely, given the ALO plotline, at least in one case)
123. diegolg on October 8, 2012 at 4:08 am said:

@MaKNooN Yeah, I kind of fell that this could be an epic series, but it’s happening to be just a good one. I mean, if this first arc was a whole season with 24 episodes and the next one the same, it could have been far better. Sometimes I fell like watching one of those recaps, with missing parts between the scenes.

124. jarhead on October 8, 2012 at 4:17 am said:

To all you guys arguing about the time delay brain cooker. If you think about it, Kayaba Akihiko is in God Mode there. He made a place for asuna and kirito to chill beforehand so he could talk to them afterwards. Its better explained in the book though. In the anime you kinda have to use some logic to come up with the only conclusion possible. Kayaba Akihiko is God there. He can do whatever the crap he wants.

125. jarhead on October 8, 2012 at 4:19 am said:

Also. Its already been stated that Kayaba Akihiko said he actually MADE that place just to talk to BOTH of them. I guess it sucks for the other characters he didnt care to converse with…. hahahahaha

126. jarhead on October 8, 2012 at 4:30 am said:

And… you guys realize the book was written like… ” a giant recap” right????? Would have been very difficult to pull specifics outta their ass.

127. I know I’m a bit late to the talking, but I have some speculation about the Change to Immortal typo.
If you look at the Change to Immortal as a sort of characteristic with a binary input, it really does make sense. He had Change to Immortal set to 1, or On for those that don’t get it. By reenabling that characteristic, it is very well possible that he was enabling the command/characteristic so that it sets to 0, or Off for those that still don’t get it.

128. Oh, and seriously, WTFredundancy on my part.

Great job guys, as always. Thank you and keep up the good work.

134. Charkelle on October 9, 2012 at 2:44 am said:

About how Kirito and Asuna didn’t die when their characters did, it’s actually a rather simple explanation in the LN, just another one that didn’t make it into the anime entirely:
Kayaba Akihiko made that glass plane in the sky specifically for the chance to talk to them before everything ended. It’s not explicitly stated, but it can be inferred that he interfered to prevent their NERvgear from killing them (which he would be quite capable of doing, considering he controls everything about SAO). It’s quite possible that there’s some sort of short delay between a when a player dies in-game and when they get their brains fried, during which time he could stop the process, or he could have set it up beforehand to suspend the process upon their deaths. There are plenty of ways it could happen, but it’s clear (especially from his Congratulations line) that he intentionally let them live somehow.
135. How come no one commented on the request that Kirito made before the duel? That Kayaba would ensure that Asuna can not suicide, which was agreed. Asuna jumping in front of Kirito to save him is basically an act of suicide, is it not plausible that Kayaba has already made the preparations for Asuna not to be able to die?

136. Mojara on October 9, 2012 at 1:27 pm said:

Why do some people saying Alfheim Online or ALO is next? Its true that kirito will transfer to Alfheim Online for the sake of saving Asuna but the title/anime itself is still Sword Art Online >.<

137. @Madox
Uhh he didn’t expect Asuna to negate the paralysis affect on herself and it was Kayaba who dealt the blow not Asuna sooo.
@Mojara
Spoiler tags please I already read the LN so it’s no biggie for me but others might not be happy about your post
o-o

138. Kazeto on October 9, 2012 at 2:03 pm said:

@Jerk:
I’m not sure that one qualifies as a spoiler. I mean, it’s a show about games, and we are only halfway through it, so there has to be a new game because SAO is kind of unplayable now. And the name of the new game doesn’t amount to anything in this case, unless people searched the word but in that case they would be spoiling themselves.
Now, if I said that
Lyfa is Kirito’s cousin Suguha
or that
Kayaba’s spirit will give Kirito admin powers to ALO
, that would be spoilers.
@Charkelle:
Yeah, that explanation is the one that makes sense. And if anything, it’s not impossible for Kayaba to have been the one to kill “dead” players for real in his spare time – that way he would be able to have a better view at what happened
and considering that the whole game was more of a social experiment (of the “what would players do when they were forced to become characters rather than players” kind) than a game for him it would make sense for it to be that way. Especially since it is improbable (though not impossible) that the game would be able to send the signal to kill the player without getting any “external” input for that.
139. A lot of people seem to like this anime …
Personally I found the character development weak (too rushed) and watched it mostly for the interesting setting. Each to their own I suppose. De gustibus non est disputandum.
Also I just found out the EDing is sang by Tomatsu Haruka, Asuna’s seiyuu (also To Love-Ru’s Lala’s seiyuu) who is also the singer of Baby Baby Love (Motto To Love-Ru’s EDing). Mind = blown.
I always thought she was just a singer, because I found her quite good so I assume she was a dedicated singer, didn’t know she did voices too.

140. Charkelle on October 10, 2012 at 12:20 am said:

@Madox: Another thing in the LN that didn’t make it into the anime there. After Kirito asked him to prevent Asuna from committing suicide (at least for a short time), Kayaba said that he would prevent her from being able to leave the city (there would be no way for her to kill herself there, aside from having someone else kill her in a duel or something to that effect).
@Mojara: For one, that is really something that should be in spoiler tags. Second, there is plenty of reason to think that:
For one, the Light Novels are still titled “Sword Art Online” even eight volumes after the SAO arc was completed, so there’s no reason the anime wouldn’t do the same. Second, this is an anime adaptation of the light novel series, and in the light novels Kirito went to ALO next. There’s nothing to indicate they would be doing anything but continuing to follow the LN story, and the anime isn’t finished yet.
141. @Mojara
It’s as simple as this- Most Anime/Manga etc have arcs which are basically different stories or parts of the anime which fit together to create the wider picture. The anime will cover the first 4 volumes Which make up two separate arcs of the LNs. Sword art Online (SAO) and Alfheim Online (ALO ) Even though the anime and LNs as a whole is called Sword art online, this will still be the Alfheim Online arc. Hence why everyone is saying Alfheim Online is next.

142. man00ver on October 10, 2012 at 4:38 am said:

Technically speaking, the first arc is “Aincrad,” and the second arc is “Fairy Dance.” Then we hope to get “Phantom Bullet” and the “Alicization” stories…at least *I* do. ๐Ÿ™‚

143. ^ I was more talking about the worlds the arcs were based in to avoid confusion. Yeah this series will stop with Volume 4, but we can hope for more, I’m up to Volume 7 at the moment, but have had to mostly stop reading due to exams coming up :/
