Reality, be rent! Synapse, break! Oh, wait, wrong show…but it’s kind of how I feel.
Shun tumbled off my cool list, but I’d sure like to hear the rest of his explanation. It’d better be good. No matter the excuse, I don’t think he can be forgiven for toying with Saki’s little heart like he did all episode long. Maybe he deserves what’s coming to him.
We gotta keep an eye on Maria, given the calamity foretold about her way back in episode 2.
Thanks for the super-fast release!

15. And now I just feel bad for Mamoru. Sucks to be the space wheel.
I thought the whole relationship angle really showed off the Bonobo based society concept quite well. Even if I found the SatoruxShun thing to come out of left field considering they both seemed to have the hots for Saki two years ago and Mamoru’s pining for Maria, Maria’s glomping of Saki, and Saki’s crush on Shun seem to have stayed constant. Yes I know Teenagers + 2 Year timeskip means feelings change but It was still jarring as a viewer. This is why I don’t like timeskips so much

20. ULTRA GAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY

21. you sonuvabitch who uploaded those disgusting youtube links and this picture…

22. If you search and read the manga (1st volume translated), the yuri scene is there from the 1st arc (in anime, Satoru and Saki are separated from others, in the manga, all of them managed to stay together – I’m not sure about the novel, though). There are quite a lot of differences, such as: the manga has progressed as deep as visiting the queen of the colony, but no sign of the library and the monk.
I find the anime quite abstract and hard to follow in the first few episodes, but judging with the mystery/horror genre in mind, the overall effect might be better.

I learned today that I knew a lot less about bonobos than I thought I did. O.O Educational!
Upon more reading, also noted ‘Roughly 60% of all bonobo sexual activity occurs between two or more females.’ and ‘bonobo females which are sterile or too young to reproduce still engage in sexual activity’.
I note the prevalence of homosexual interactions as helpful for avoiding inconvenient pregnancy (particularly if children are terrifying to adults), but also note possible social frictions caused by having pairing rather than bonobo-like near-absolute span of interaction.
Though not directly related, was recently amused/surprised by how, in the manga, Saki’s attire (and only hers) is so much more… ah… ‘open’ than in the anime.
Still finding it hard to suspend disbelief regarding the amount of stress she’s undergoing due to (what should be to her) normal occurrences. Separately, even if taken as given that the bonobo knowledge somehow explains that, her not discussing it with the only other people who received the same information is strange. Again, there’s a strong impression of ‘person from our time catapulted into their time and has to pretend to be one of them’ which shouldn’t fit the context.
…writing these paragraphs while watching the episode, incidentally. Shun’s reaction, perhaps mirroring Saki’s, is likewise problematic regarding the first point, but a little more believable regarding the second (why at all/why only her).
…there’s still that lasting question about what that syndrome is, yes…

24. Torrent to brain bleach where?

25. Thanks! 😀

26. Disgusting episode with all that homo abomination…
Really killed it for me. Hope it doesn’t show anymore on it, felt like I was in a twilight zone while uttering “where’s the freaking story!?”

27. This story is not getting better. The animation sucks. It was going great on the 1st few episodes but has taken a turn for the WTF and what the hell is going on. It’s a real shame too because it started so great and kick ass. Sad to see is just slopped together like this. Won’t be surprised if this gets canceled.

Lol at all the homophobia.

29. Holy shit. I just proved my own prediction of last week right.
>First 10 sec homo couples everywhere.
Ok. I don’t even know where we’re going now.

30. Ok… Yaoi is not my kind cup of coffee. o_o Although, the episode strengthen the fact the their society encourage communal sexual interaction, just like bonobos. In other words, they accept homosexuality and bisexuality (maybe). Like Anonymous points out, these homosexuality behaviour is sort of deterrent against teenage pregnancy; they don’t want the problems plagued the society millennium years ago to upset the social order of PK community.
Set aside the bonobos business, the truth they learned about their society on that summer 2 years ago still haunts them. I think Saki also pulls in the “norms of the society” ’cause she cannot discuss openly to anybody else; afraid the adults knew they have broken the taboo also lost and regain back their mantra. I bet most of them don’t want to bring up the topic when they are together since either nearly forgotten or didn’t fully understand or believe what they had learn/heard. Still,
the adult knows and Shun is the first to go (I also assume that why the reason he have a pet bulldog. I bet this will catalyst Saki’s plight to escape the society and her forewarning about Maria.
31. @Anonymous ikr? Why is she wearing crotchless pants lol
Also, lol @ all the people saying all the gay ruined the series. I mean this almost completely blindsided us but still.
I’m not sure if I’m using this right so in case it doesn’t work, some SPOILERS below
Anyone else think that Shun is falling into the Dark Side? He gave a pretty nasty look in that one scene and the chick was probably an abomination. The egg thing is arguable but could be related to why the perv ran out of the room
This whole Episode, my reaction is “what am I watching again?” Then again, I started reading the manga to get a better feel for the story. My reaction to that was, “WTF am I reading??” I do have to say the animation is weird but enjoyable (at least in my eyes) I think it gives homage to how older anime was drawn. Homophobia aside (well mainly yaoi, never was a fan of yaoi), I can’t wait to see the next episode.

33. @Huh
I think in the previous episode preview, we’d know Shun and Satoru developed sexual relationship. But, must of us (including me) were taken by surprise that everybody in the Academy are forming homoerotic relationship when we watched Episode 8. Nobody expecting that (unless you had read the novel/manga prior the anime).

How the hell is any of this surprising? Were you sleeping when the minoshiro explained how society evolved into a society of love, no matter the gender? They might as well have just held up a bright neon sign that said “THERE WILL BE HOMOSEXUAL CONTENT LATER IN THIS SHOW”

@AMg: Yeah, it came out of nowhere, maybe it would have been less surprising if there was no timeskip. But all the people being homophobic is just a sign our society still has a long way to go.
Personally, while it’s not my cup of tea either, I was not bothered by those scenes at all.

38. Muian124 on November 17, 2012 at 9:04 pm said:

It’s like the Eugenics Board from “The Forever War” seized control of the village. All I have to say is that, it don’t matter what team he’s playing for, Satoru never lacks for bitches.
This is a bit odd though. I dealt with the whole homo thing by thinking of it in Greek terms, which, if we go by those rules then they probably frown on actual intercourse. Anyway, the point is that the only way this sort of homoeroticism comes into being is usually through segregation of the sexes. The point of that practice is to control bloodlines by preserving girls’ virginity so that one can be reasonably sure at least who their first child’s father is. In societies where first born sons did not inherit their father’s assets, women generally had more freedom, and so far as I know homoeroticism did not arise.
Now, individuals can be powerfully directed through socialization, so if one or two generations of people got together and decided to act in this way, their children who grow up observing them will likely act similarly, though it’s never been taken quite to the point where most men will willingly choose other men over women. I think it might be possible but why go to all this trouble when you could just as well implement early arranged marriages? Societies around the world have been successfully doing that for thousands of years. In any case, they’d have to implement arranged marriages anyway to get the kids to stop having homo sex. In cultures where adolescent homoeroticism is encouraged individuals often have difficulty making the shift over to hetero-sex when they are expected to. And generally the only reason these practices arise is due to a shortage of women. As long as there is no shortage, I don’t see why they shouldn’t be married off at twelve years of age.
Come to think of it, how is this bonobo thing supposed to work again? By that logic a man with twelve wives should be as peaceful as a yogi but we generally see that not to be the case. I suppose they have to be socialized so that they think of sensuality as something which can be expressed at any moment and which is appropriate to relieve stress. Maybe that’s the trick but that still doesn’t explain why they bother to direct their attentions towards members of the same sex. It’s useful for population control but, since they seem to kill off a good portion of their population before adulthood, you’d think they’d want as much reproduction as possible. At least, they’s want it at an elevated level. Besides that, how do they handle birth control?
Ih wait, it just occurred to me, most societies try to solve issues of aggression by suppressing emotion and sexuality. Sociologists of the 19th century even predicted that emotion and sexuality would be altogether done away with eventually in the interest of social advancement. Japan went so far as trying to get people not to bear their teeth. I’ve usually observed that most people get irritated at open displays of affection, though I’m really not sure why. I’m starting to suspect this bonobo thing wouldn’t work with humans at all really.
Oh well, thanks for the episode.

41. @aoihakurei–srsly.
@Fadeout4–srsly.
Actually, I was annoyed by how Shun/Saki is being played as the *real* ship, with Shun/Satoru and Saki/Maria as romantic false leads–that is, that the show is privileging het over homo. It seemed like Saki only hooked up with Maria because she was jealous of Satoru/Shun. gross. Also they showed way more of Saki/Maria than Shun/Satoru, sigh. Not that I don’t like both, but the inequity was kind of annoying…. OTOH watching Shun being so uncomfortable/halfhearted making out with Satoru made it really sad to watch, so I’m kind of ok with not having seen more. >.>
I feel really sorry for Maria, Saki is going to break her heart and it seems like she’s going to be completely blindsided. Really, with everyone jealous of everyone else, it looks like things are headed towards an epic shitstorm.

42. Alexvrb on November 18, 2012 at 2:55 am said:

Well, this anime just became a lot harder to recommend.
That or Mamoru will snap first since he’s the only one without any close partners. Also, he likes to draw portraits that involves Maria as his subject and I bet it become she become an object of obsession in his eyes. Anyone notice how human the animation felt? It didn’t feel like the standard animation we’ve been seeing. Reminded me of the tiny details KyoAni is known for animating.

48. In a way, the knowledge of the library is indeed dangerous. Most of us probably would be somewhat uncomfortable if we were told that everything we believe to be normal only exists because someone screwed around with out brain chemistry. And surely, there have to be some adverse consequences of trying to force the social organization of another species on the human race. We just happen to see Saki’s discomfort the most because she’s the viewpoint character (and because she’s one of the characters who knows the revelations of the library).
From what I can tell, most characters are still heterosexual on the level of human romantic attachment. The scientists of ages past merely added the more primal urges from bononos, which are either gender-indiscriminate or more geared towards homosexual interaction. Saki clearly feels an urge towards physical contact with Maria, which internally clashes with the more romantic feelings towards Shun. The difference between her and most other members of their society being that she knows what causes the discrepancy.

49. @Marelt, it seems like Maria and Satoru have plenty romantic feelings toward Saki and Shun. Both Satoru and Saki took other lovers because Shun had someone else/rejected them; the parallel between their actions has to be intentional on the show’s part, and shows them having similar feelings, too. And it’s pretty clear that Maria is attached to her and Saki as a couple, not just as fuckbuddies.
Meh, I think the show’s being heterocentric, but it’s not as busted as that.

50. Hah gayyy!
But i feel like we will see a “Karma demon” soon…

51. ZEROthefirst on November 19, 2012 at 5:10 am said:

I know that a Karma Demon or something is making all of the characters act gay (at least I hope), because that was the most awkward and max amount of gay I can take. I don’t mind the whole girl on girl part, but I don’t want to see anymore guys frenching and getting all silly~

52. SomeGuyWithOpinions on November 19, 2012 at 5:49 am said:

I find the homophobic reaction to this episode amusing and disturbing at the same time. I really hope all the comments are from 14-year-old boys uncomfortable with their sexuality or sexuality in general, because if they’re coming from anything approaching an adult, I have even less respect for the common person than I had. It’s just kissing, it’s a part of the story and character development, and the reason for it is explained clearly in an earlier episode. It doesn’t make you gay if some characters in your Chinese girl cartoons are gay, not that it matters if anyone is gay or not. Grow up, people.

53. @Mayhem
Don’t get me wrong. I am a supporter of increased visibility for gay couples in media. It’s just that in this particular case, I believe that a certain degree of heterocentricity is actually justified by the plot, given what has been revealed so far. IRL, science still has no clue why people are hetero- or homosexual, but it seems fairly universal that heterosexuals still make up the majority of any human population, so we know that something unusual is going on here. The show is free to make assertions about human psychology/chemistry and the effects of screwing around with it.
To be honest, I realize is pointless to talk about true feelings at this point. It is somewhat scary to think that whatever we consider our true feelings or free will is as fragile as a shot of brain chemicals.

54. heterogenous on November 19, 2012 at 12:46 pm said:

Everything about this anime is great until that homo scene came. Dropped this anime all because of that scene because for me, that fucking homo scene is disturbing and that totally ruined the plot for me. Yeah, I know that this scene is just a part of the so called “character development” but I’m totally against those homo love because they kinda ruin the purpose of men having a “sword” and women having a “sheath”.
The human race will be put to an end if homosexual love is allowed and reproduction isn’t possible anymore. Homo love is never welcome in my house…never!
Now I know why this anime is titled “Shinsekai Yori” or “From the New World”. It’s because of the fact that the “new world” conveys to those who have homosexual love.
Whew…seems like I’ve gone too far here. Anyway, as always, thanks for the quality subs here UTW.

If the world was run by people saying its wrong or you can’t do that it wouldn’t be a place I would like to live. Let people do what they want, I personally thought that it was a fine scene because it brought me out of my own comfort zone. That takes a good effort to do that.
