Lightning fast release this week! You can thank the crazy efficient team on the show… and the alcohol and nicotine in my body for depriving me of my good night’s rest.
It was totally worth it though. I’m still breathless from the sheer impact of this episode.
And here’s a few words from fnord.
This was my favorite episode so far. About one minute into it, I realized I’d seen this art style and direction before. Characters looking quizzically, strange angles, weird backgrounds.
It reminded me of Casshern Sins far more than could be attributed to chance, and aye, the episode was directed by Casshern’s director. I adore this surreal beauty; Casshern may just be my
favorite show just as this is my favorite episode in this show. If you like this episode, I recommend you watch Casshern Sins.

    Ask Kusion and Daiz.

  8. @ar
I would get ahold of them by using mirc, right?

  9. Sure, but they probably won’t give you any kind of useful answer. You can try anyway~

Very, very nice work. Thanks for bringing it out so quickly!
Heavy stuff, with excellent art and music. It’s a good thing there’s going to be 25 episodes, because at this point there’s really no telling where this story is going or how it will end (and I’m not looking for spoilers, really, so you novel readers can keep the lid on).
I had an idea that it’d be fruitful to read the manga, but it looks like that’s a whole different genre of entertainment!

Am I the only one here who doesnt like that art direction at all? All those weird poses of Saki.
My main problem though is that this and ep. 5 are so different from the rest of the show that it simply feels out of place to me. They should either make ALL eps look like those two eps or none.

  14. Amazing epidode, this show is outstanding. You guys are doing a great job with it. Casshern Sins is a favorite of mine as well.

  15. @man00ver
    yeah, the manga. . .
I’m all up for divergent storylines in different adaptations as it keeps the story fresh and not just a retread in a different medium. But did they really have to dress Saki up like a stripper? I mean there’s fanservice and then there’s “I can see the outline of her pelvic bones above her pants”
As for the episode itself: really good stuff, I got a bit misty eyed at the end. Poor Subaru. Can’t wait to see what Saki will do after she just remembered her missing sister and now this happened.

Casshern Sins was an amazing show. Might pick up New World only because of that reference.

Well Zed, I just finished the 4 manga chapters on Batoto, and it seems to be a more serious treatment than I expected. It is more ecchi, and the storyline differences are stark, but it does seem to add a lot to the character potrayals. The anime is well ahead of it, so it’s safe to read without spoiler risk (though maybe not at work).

i got really excited jus cos of your reference to casshern sins. i love the art style in that show, despite how many people actually bombed it when i first started watching

Loved this ep… it was intense. The Saki pelvic/butt-shots didn’t bother me, because this show definitely has sexual undertones – it even had them before the time-skip. The art and animation was awesome, as well. I hope he directs more episodes!
Keep up the good work, guys. <3

The presence of details/explanations, sparing though they may be, were very welcome. (If a six-month schedule was chosen over a three-month one, that could explain the feeling of being strung along way too slowly; if three months, it would probably have felt far too rushed.)
boingman: I confess I had the same reactions to Saki’s gestures and poses in most of the middle. The mitigating circumstances at the beginning and the end aside, in the middle she resembled nothing so much as a bad actor being meaninglessly overdonely theatrical. Preening rather than reacting.
Slightly surprised that ‘Yami yori mo’ was translated as ‘Than darkness’ rather than ‘More than darkness’.
Reminded a lot by the plot of the film Forbidden Planet.
Now then, with this as the ‘premise’, what will happen..? What will Maria do? What sort of ending/future will there be?
–Ah. Just had a flash of intuition that the bakenezumi are what became of the humans without jiryoku. Rather, I wondered about it since before, but hyponotism didn’t seem quite convincing enough as a way for all non-gods to be perceived as inhuman, particularly considering the Queen. The mechanism laid out in this episode, however, provides a clear explanation for how the physical differences observed could in fact have been implemented. Hmmm.
Though I may criticise parts that I perceive as lacking, and enjoy breaking down (/analysing) the fiction, I gain happiness from doing so and remain significant curious as to what sort of story remains to be told. I remain wholly grateful for the time and effort put into this fiction’s translation!

  24. I totally agree. This episode rocked and reminded me of Casshern as well (sniff should watch it again!)
This being said: sad love story 🙁 and poor Subaru. Staid with his master so he wouldn’t have a reason to get himself destroyed and then it still happened because of that stupid cat thing -_-
    Can’t wait until next week’s episode…

  25. wasnt the episode after the infodump alos directed by the guy who made casshern sins?

  26. I hope he was being sarcastic. Casshern Sins was one of the worst anime ever made… Terrible, without plot, boring, and depressing as hell.

  27. Well, the masks in the outro just went from seeming mostly-benign to … not.

  28. Well, another show that deals with historiography becomes painfully personal. Whee~
(The other historiography-dealing show I know of is One Piece.)

  29. I guess the event in this episode will be the turning point for the story and friendship between Saki and her childhood friends. Next episode we will have some serious conflict of interest.

I haven’t read any of the other adaptations of this one but, who else gets that uncomfortable feeling that our narrator is Saki and that she is the only one of this group that survives to the end? This is completely speculation but, I’m just getting that feeling from the fact that she keeps learning things that most of the people of this society aren’t supposed to know.
Another thing, and this is something that I DO want to know, does it seem like the adults here all know the truth about what can go wrong with Cantus? If so, how do they learn? At what point in their education are the children let into the loop on what’s been happening to their classmates as they’ve been growing up? Or, do they not find out until their first child is snatched away for being dangerous? If answering would give away a major plot point you don’t have to but, these are the questions that come to mind here. I truly love it when a series makes me think like this. Thank you UTW for this release ^_^

  34. Ah this ep had it all together except on the weird point of views at Saki. Tears, heartbreak and awe.

  35. @shsmd
Please contact TV Asahi and tell them to fix their broadcasts up, because that’s how it was broadcasted (lol). Basically the tl;dr is when it looks that shit it was probably worse in the broadcast, and that has already been filtered as much as possible. We can’t do shit about terrible broadcasts because they are out of our control so you’ll just have to deal with it.

  36. I knew it!
    Anyways, thanks for the episode

  37. Did not really agree fully with the TL’s thoughts in Epi 1 (I think), but I guess now we can see the meaning of the ‘呪’ in ‘cantus’ perhaps… It may be seen as a cursed gift if any one of them can become like that at any given point. I wonder if this has any connection to the ‘modern world’ scene back in the 1st episode.
What’s worse is that the adults seem to have no method to deal with this phenomenon; having to result to murder (disappearing children) to resolve this..
@RLH85 I hope that’s not the case (about Saki).. that would be pretty sad.. Yeah at the moment it pretty much looks like 2 categories of society; the adults who knows stuff and the children left in the dark..
