We somehow managed to pull through this week despite going through a few backup staff. Hopefully things will go smoother next week (i.e. you get your release faster).
Guess there’s not much to add other than that I liked what I saw. Looking forward to subsequent episodes of the show.
P.S.: We’re still looking for a new typesetter to join our ranks. Please refer to the bottom of this post for more information.
P.P.S.: Typesetting this show will be a lot of work, so if you already have a show on Friday please don’t apply unless this can take highest priority.

    “Super Duper” is still a really weird/awkward translation

  20. Kirandra on July 5, 2013 at 11:32 am said:

    Thanks for the subs! By the way, is there any particular reason why you chose to use “Super Duper High School” instead of “Super High School Level”?

  21. Kiraly on July 5, 2013 at 11:43 am said:

    Kirandra: I’m not in the group, but I assume it was because:
    1) The people who translated the game translated it as Super Duper, and the people who played it are used to seeing it.
    2) Super High School Level sounds retarded as fuck. Why would you want it translated that way?
    I’m more curious about why Yamada became a Super Duper Fanzine Maker and why the name of the school – Kibugamine – and Monokuma’s name were translated at all. I though the standard was to leave names alone (unless the setting is something other than Japan)?

  22. Kiraly on July 5, 2013 at 11:46 am said:

    *Kibougamine, great place to make a typo…

  23. Elly on July 5, 2013 at 11:58 am said:

    Kiraly: The translation that uses “Super Duper” only came out recently; there’s another more popular and established translation that uses “Super High School Level”, and more people are used to seeing that than “Super Duper”.

  24. Kirandra on July 5, 2013 at 12:27 pm said:

    Kiraly: Yeah, what Elly said. Plus I think Super Duper sounds rather childish and ridiculous.
    As for Monobear and the school’s name, I guess it’s because it makes more sense when translated? Unlike most names they actually mean something.

  25. GabrieliosP on July 5, 2013 at 12:45 pm said:

    @Kirandra
    The original names are as ridiculous. Danganronpa is supposed to be a series in a ridiculous world that takes itself seriously, so it fits. PLUS, the game (in its original release, not in any translation patch), in a instance, romanizes the title as “Super Duper”, so in a sense it’s already canon.
    I can understand translating the school’s name, but why the hell translate Monokuma’s name I’ll never understand. The school can be justified because “Academy of Hope and Students of Despair”, but there’s no reason to translate the name of a “mascot”.

  26. shin on July 5, 2013 at 12:50 pm said:

    Please still do Rabu Lab. Someone needs to save us from Hadena and Doki.

  27. Kiraly on July 5, 2013 at 12:57 pm said:

    Erm, yes, in the LP behind the Great Paywall. But I figured the people who loved the series would have actually played the game since it was translated…?
    Kirandra: And SHSL is… not silly and childish? And not engrishy and actually wrong (as it implies the kids are HS level instead of way beyond that)? A good deal of the charm in the game is the juxtaposition of it being silly and childish with the Battle Royale-esque plot.
    And many things in Japan ‘make sense’ when translated. Fukawa means Rotten River, which is because she is a ‘rotten girl’ (fujoshi) – should people have translated her name as Rotty River? Because it actually *means* something. That’s just the way kanji work, you can’t have a proper noun without a translation to it – that doesn’t mean it *should* be translated.
    Anyway, my bad to have stumbled into a debate. I was just curious about the staff’s take on it.

    @kidlat020
    There are PSP emulators that can play this game without issues. If my 6 years old PC can, I don’t see why yours couldn’t.

  31. blahmoomoo on July 5, 2013 at 3:22 pm said:

    @GabrieliosP
    Unless you have an ATI card like me. Then a bug make it unplayable on the two major PSP emulators, at least at the moment. 🙁
    Extra details: the cursor for selecting things when investigating or shooting stuff during the class trial is completely unreliable, as the collision detection fails to work properly on ATI’s buggy OpenGL drivers (and the two major PSP emulators use OpenGL exclusively). Not sure if this happens on all ATI cards, but I haven’t heard anything to the contrary.
    PSPs are kinda cheap and it’s SUPER easy to patch their firmware (on most models, literally just load a program on the memory card and run it), so I’m getting the real hardware. Just a matter of waiting for the package… then I can play a bit and start watching this.

  39. The recently released english PSP patch is pretty much a joke as far as tranlation goes. Fans of the game read the LP and it is common knowledge that the English patch is more of a mockery and nothing anyone would take seriously. Therefore, using the falsely translated names and titles from the patch makes everyone cringe.
    Super High School Level Heir = Super Duper High School Scion
    Super High School Level Fortune Teller = super Duper High School Shaman
    Super High School Level Doujin Author = Super Duper High School Fanzine Maker
    Are you kidding me?
    So to answer your statment: No, every single fan of the game reads the LP since it is legit and most correct. The PSP patch is an insult to the game and shouldn’t be played by anyone. The end.

  41. Kiraly on July 5, 2013 at 9:48 pm said:

    Lia: Right, true fans of the game read the LP instead of playing the game. Because that’s what you do to enjoy a game. (Nevermind that said LP is full of engrish and retarded translations.)
    >Super High School Level Heir
    Heir and Scion mean the same bloody thing. Scion is just more pretentious, which it should be.
    >Super High School Level Fortune Teller
    What’s wrong with Shaman? Does it somehow misrepresent him?
    >Super High School Level Doujin Author
    They actually translated it as Otaku. I’m not sure what UTW had in mind when they wrote ‘Fanzine Maker’.
    And Otaku is exactly what he is – we don’t actually have any stereotypes associated with doujin *artists* in the west.
    Then only ones I’d actually concede are Sleuth and High-Roller, everything else was fine.

  42. Anon on July 5, 2013 at 10:17 pm said:

    @Lia
    You’re a fucking moron. I and I’m sure many other people have been interested in the game but waited for the translation so we can, you know, actually fucking play it. I have zero interest in reading an LP and had no intention of wading through all the bullshit that’s been posted there by these so-called “fans” who haven’t even played the game themselves. I’ve been having great fun playing it so far and have no major issues with the translation. You can take your shit opinion (no, you have no facts) and shove it up your ass.

  43. @Kiraly
    Shaman and Fortune Teller aren’t really the same thing, they have some similarities but you can’t really say they’re the same
    The Japanese title for Yamada actually *is* Doujin Writer/Author, so Fanzine Maker is a lot closer compared to Otaku
    Does this misrepresent them? Not really, looking for incredibly minor inaccuracies in the titles is pretty nitpicky tbh (not directed to you)
    Sleuth sounds fine to me
    Also, SHSL is a really dumb name

  47. I actually thing SHSL fits more. Super Duper High School —- makes it sound like there are a lot more people at that amount of ‘ability’ than SHSL makes me think of.

  48. Gina on July 6, 2013 at 5:42 am said:

    Great work on the episode! Thank you very much for subbing it.
    There is one thing I think you made the wrong decision with, which is the use of some of the Project Zetsubou translations. Orenronen’s translations of the characters’ special abilities from the LP are the way that most of the fandom was introduced to the series. People above are correct in that Project Zetsubou’s translations of those terms are something that the fandom groans and shakes their heads at. So, if UTW chose Project Zetsubou’s Super Duper whatever terms in order to be in line with the fandom, they got tripped up and chose the ones that almost the entire fandom hates and never uses.
    See, Project Zetsubou’s patch has only been out for a very short while, whereas Orenronen started posting his translations in 2011. That’s why the fandom prefers to and is used to Orenronen’s. (Aside from the fact even in a silly game, “Super Duper” sounds silly. I can suspend disbelief just for long enough to imagine teachers referring to their students as Super High School Level whatevers, but Super Duper goes over the edge.)

  49. Nameless on July 6, 2013 at 12:15 pm said:

    So general consensus: UTW don’t sub this since nobody will like whatever ridiculous translation you use for this ridiculous game-to-anime,
    In other words: Sub Love Lab!
    : D

  50. SommenRider on July 6, 2013 at 12:39 pm said:

    @Gina Just because a fandom prefers it, doesn’t mean it’s correct.
    If those fans cared enough, they can make their own sub group. Not that hard unless none of them actually know Japanese!

    To the guys who’ve played the game.
    The bit about having to “commit the murder without the rest of the classmates finding out”, has that titbit been dropped entirely from the anime plot?

  55. GabrieliosP on July 7, 2013 at 3:35 am said:

    @Jayse
    Only after the first murder occurs is that Monokuma fully explains the Class Trials. Before that, the characters are left to wonder why the school rules in their ElectroiDs say that “a character can graduate if he kills someone provided his murder isn’t betrayed by other students”, and even especulate about it.
    In the game, at that point Monokuma only explained that you had to kill someone. What concerns me is whether or not they’ll go over *SPOILER* being disaglined.

  56. Nemesis loves Junko on July 7, 2013 at 4:47 am said:

    My god you people can never be pleased with anything. Keep up the good work and remember that despair is part of a healthy balanced diet.
    Anyway, Super Duper is more stupid than Super High School Level imo. SHSL at least sounds a bit more formal, I have no idea Zetsubou used that, unless in the original japanese, it was closer than SHSL.
    Anyway, I can’t wait to see if anything will be different in the anime,
    So in the meantime, time to finish this game up, only got chapters 4-6 to go.

  57. Hope you guys will translate the CVs in the OP next ep onwards, thanks!

  58. GabrieliosP on July 7, 2013 at 5:19 am said:

    @Nemesis loves Junko
    But the Japanese titles are anything BUT formal. It’s lost in translation but the original titles are silly to the point of idiocy. The very fact that SHSL sounds formal already defies the intended purpose. Danganronpa is supposed to be a silly series that takes itself seriously, and that’s why it’s awesome.
    And the original game (japanese, unpatched) did use Super Duper once (in “Super Duper Nasty Torture”), so it’s already kind of canon.

  59. Eilif on July 7, 2013 at 10:15 pm said:

    This anime plot is a bad joke.. Now that i have watched the first episode, i need to watch it to the end..

  60. Still a better survival series than Hunger Games

  61. Kirandra on July 9, 2013 at 12:41 am said:

    Can we stop with the Super Duper vs SHSL argument already?
    The Japanese game used Super Duper at times, yeah, but Spike has also used SHSL in official side materials before, so both are equally valid, okay? I’m just curious as to why UTW chose Super Duper over SHSL.

  62. Fugakaka on July 9, 2013 at 12:22 pm said:

    Can I use your sub and translate it into Vietnamese? I’m very appreciate your approval.
    And can I have your Kr codes for the ED and the Anime-ism text? I only know the basic of translating and encoding. My editing and kara is little to none, and I always do solo sub. What you guys have done is superb, and I want to keep it remains the way it is in the Vietnamese version. Just English -> Vietnamese, nothing else. I know asking for things like this is absurd, but I really love this anime and its PSP counterpart.
    I’m looking forward to your response. Whether I get your approval or not, thank you very much for making this sub. It’s really really amazing!

  63. @Kirandra
    Using it once in something not related to character titles isnt using it ‘at times’.
    Actually, I now have to null my comments. The ‘Super Duper Nasty Torture’ which is shown with that name in english matches the japanese section for what is typically used as SHSL.
