PATCH: Download here.

Following the enormous outrage ensuing from our release, UTW has decided as a group to drop the joint with gg, and gg has graciously accepted. Our subsequent Index II releases will be on our own.

Before you gloat at how this is a victory for you or whatever, I have several things to say. I was quite amused, but disgusted, at the community we serve. Many of you were quick to denounce our release before even watching it, criticizing our work based simply on really quite trivial stylistic decisions. Instead of reviewing our releases based on translation accuracy, line flow, and video quality, you rejected our work on the sole bases of name order, presence of honorifics, and “Sparky”. Has the anime community really fallen so low? Are trivial stylistic differences really that important? That is not to say we did not make any mistakes in our release. We did, we’ve corrected them in this version, and we’ll take measures to prevent it from happening again. However, an unbelievable amount of you were so hung up over the so-called gg ideals that barely any of you even gave our release a chance to notice them.

By dropping the joint, we hope you can judge our releases for what they are. We will revert back to UTW ideals henceforth. In a nutshell:

  1. Honorifics are restored. Less work for us to use them anyway.
  2. Eastern name order restored.
  3. Still no karaoke, however. They’re unnecessary and a waste of resources.
  4. “Biribiri” will still be rendered as “Sparky”. Believe it or not, the UTW staff was unanimous in our decision for this. And honestly, if you really think “Sparky” is in poor taste, allow me to remind you that “Biribiri” means absolutely nothing in English, and therefore will also mean nothing to, say, someone who has just finished watching season 1 from Eclipse (who used “Shocker” for the same term). Furthermore, I’d like to remind you “Biribiri” is a nickname to begin with (surprise, her real name is Misaka Mikoto), and a mildly derogatory one at that. “Sparky” actually captures all the nuances of “Biribiri” perfectly, and is therefore a perfectly legitimate and reasoned rendition. And quite honestly, I couldn’t care less if your dog also happens to be named Sparky. Please.
  5. “Fukou da” will still be rendered as “How unlucky”. Frankly, if you were expecting us to copy other sub groups in rendering recurring terms and phrases in the series, then there’s nothing we can do to help you.

With the above changes, our release is in line with UTW ideals, and indeed equivalent in terms of localization to Eclipse’s season 1 subs. While we may not fully adopt gg’s policies, we do respect them and their ideals; furthermore, UTW would not even exist if it weren’t for gg’s generosity in providing us with raw transport streams to work from for each and every one of our shows. Heck, every UTW release can be considered a joint with gg in this manner.

I’ll close this post with a few words from Kusion:

Though it may not seem like it, I’ve read over the hundreds of thousands of comments. Be it on UTW, gg, IRC, or /a/. I can honestly say I’ve spent way too much time reading what you have to say. But it’s very nice to know how highly our fans think of us (people have whispered me asking, “why do you want to make our fans suffer?”). Everyone in UTW is touched by the comments you’ve made (except for the faggots), and we hope you will enjoy this release of Index II under UTW!

If our policies somehow still annoy you, I simply ask that you keep the complaining to a minimum and settle for an alternative. Thank you for reading, and enjoy the release.

I didn’t mind the gg-UTW, but I am kind of happy that it is a solo project instead of a joint now. UTW for life <3

I don’t really care bout that Sparky thing. It’s alright, and I actually quiet happy that you still take pride into your idealism.
For the case of Mikoto’s nickname, I’ll just manually change your script and remux it again for my collection. So, take it easy. Just do what you think is right.
Keep your good work with balance in speed and quality. That’s what I need.

Applause. Thank you. “Sparky” is perfect. Karaoke is useless.
    Seriously: Sparky makes perfect sense.

  8. I’m partial to “Such misfortune” myself.

I find It funny how people can bitch and whine about a service that’s provided to them for free. And props to the staff here for putting up with the emo teenagers that download your releases, dunno how you guys do It.

  10. cking543 on October 12, 2010 at 6:45 pm said:

Personally, now that I think about it, I like “how unlucky” more than “Such Misfortune”. It certainly does flow better. But honestly, I have a policy of not watching gg subs (from the many troll subs in their previous releases). Sparky almost sounds like a dog’s name but now that I remember it, eclipse did use “Shocker” didn’t they? Hell I don’t even remember any of the subs ever using “BirBiri”. Most importantly I really like eastern name order, honorifics above all else, an accurate translation. Thank you UTW for providing all of this. It’s unfortunate that I didn’t download the original episode to see what the complaints were about, but good luck with the rest of the series.

  11. Personally, I don’t particularly care about the small things like name order and honorifics, because your release was still pretty solid, just like every other release you guys do. It’s a shame that so many people were upset about it because those small changes have absolutely no effect on the accuracy of translation and are just small stylistic choices :(. Well, regardless I still think you guys did the best job and plan on continuing on following your releases. Thanks for all the hard work on everything you guys do.

  12. banger on October 12, 2010 at 6:46 pm said:

i think the beef people had with sparky is its associated as a dog’s name, whereas biribiri is not associated as a dog name, so that itself changes the meaning a great deal instead of using something like shocker. anyways i am not complaining, as it does not bother me a great deal…just explaining.

  13. I’m just wondering whether they are keeping the same editor on the project, since that was my real complaint with the first episode.

  14. I’m happy that gg is out but I still don’t like the decision of using “Sparky” and “Such misfortune”. I guess EA will keep releasing edited version of your script in order of producing higher quality subs to cater the need of true fans.

  15. Mess disapproves -100
I can’t believe you guys caved.

  16. Stilzkin on October 12, 2010 at 6:48 pm said:

I agree with zhemos ^^ i had no problems with the GG joint and i could care even less if you call mikoto “shocker”or “sparky” it’s a fun show to watch

  17. lonewolf on October 12, 2010 at 6:49 pm said:

well as a group I have high opinion about u guys that’s why I was enraged by joint with >>faggots<< also by that u didn't actually changed that stupid choices for localisation and honorifics…..well good to see u back with own stuff IMO sparky is still meh 😉 (sorry had to say it)

  18. DmonHiro on October 12, 2010 at 6:50 pm said:

So EA is going to edit your subs to have “Biribiri” and “what misfortune”, and call those subs “higher quality”. Wow, this guy has WAY too much time on his hands. “True fans” my ass, you are the true definition of a “weeaboo”, if I’ve ever seen one.

  19. I’m glad to see that you guys are willing to do all of this for your fans, however, I am still very disappointed with the amount of complaints you guys received. I mean, you guys are doing this for FREE. The only thing that the fans are giving you is downloads. If this was Crunchyroll and we were all paying you monthly then I could definitely understand the complaining, but it isn’t.
Anyways, thanks again for all of your hard work UTW! It’s nice to see that there’s still some good subbing groups left out there.

  20. Awesome, guys, you rock.
    1. Honorifics is important. Yes, it is.
    2. Eastern name order restored. This is the greatest.
    3. Karaoke will just make my player hang. So be without it is good for me.
    4. I somehow prefer “Sparky” than “Shocker”.
    5. How can “Fukou da” be not “How unlucky”? You translate it totally correct.
I can’t be more satisfied. UTW FTW!!

  21. tormaid on October 12, 2010 at 6:53 pm said:

While I am partial to Eclipse’s translations if only because I am used to them, I think that yours are fine. I actually think it’s a good thing that the Anime community has become more partial to unlocalized translations. Even R1 subs are keeping honorifics now. I’m glad you decided to change this release and I will be switching to yours over Ayako from now on. Keep up the good work!

  22. causality on October 12, 2010 at 6:57 pm said:

I much prefer shocker/such misfortune to sparky/how unlucky, but I’m glad you guys decided to dig your heels in about things you actually decided for yourselves.
I’ll have to watch both UTWs and Ayako’s versions of ep 1 now to see how much it really bothers me with the handling of fuoka da…
Even if you try to say that this is your own project, you must realise you will be compared to Eclipse throughout this entire release. Ayako took the easy route and used the same wordings as Eclipse did, and have escaped a lot of scrutiny because of it – I’m surprised you guys didn’t do the same from the beginning.

  23. EA: True fans, lolwhat? Leeching there script and adding “cool” upgrades doesn’t make you a truefan in the slightest. Anybody who isn’t retarded or new to anime doesn’t need to read subs word for word, nicknames like Biribiri i;d KNOW what it means to ME personally when i hear it, reading this shit as shocker, sparky or thunderlord doesn’t even matter at the end of the day.
How unlucky…such misfortune, am i missing something here…they mean the same thing…awesome…anything else pointless to cry over?

  24. For what it’s worth, I definitely agree with everything you said in the OP. I would have backed you up on the initial release, but I wasn’t even aware of any kind of conflict until now. It’s just that the anime fandom sucks bad enough on average that I don’t really want to be any part of it, so I don’t make a habit out of reading any comments for anything.
I’m sure there are plenty of other people who also appreciated your work and didn’t comment, though, and I’m glad to see you sticking to your guns with some of this stuff. Thanks for all of your hard work.

  25. S.o.S. on October 12, 2010 at 7:00 pm said:

Yay, I was the first to mention the “Shocker” thing and you guys actually used it! That’s awesome! Saw the joint work, actually had no problems with it. I’ll definitely follow this release since (as I said in the overly commented post) it better follows my preference.
Saw no difference in Touma’s “such misfortune” line becoming “How unlucky” cause seriously, it matches his personality better. And biribiri becoming Sparky sounds like a dog name…but did you guys not want to pet her head when she got embarrassed? Dog name? Who cares, I find puppies cute so I find Sparky cute too.

  26. xgraphy on October 12, 2010 at 7:00 pm said:

Will funimation use ‘Biribiri’ and ‘Such misfortune’ etc.?
    Probably not. Get over it.

  27. banger on October 12, 2010 at 7:03 pm said:

i don’t really care about things like name order or honorifics since there is a formula to translating those things. i am just picky about “custom” things like nicknames or catchphrases and such since reading it over and over during each episode can be annoying if it is translated in a way that seems awkward to the reader. but since there is no exact translation its hard to determine if it sounds awkward because of the wording or just because its different from what we are used to (eclipse).

  28. While this is more to my tastes, I honestly didn’t mind the gg joint either. As you said, the subtitle quality is the only thing that really matters. Still, nice to see the stylistic changes back to usual UTW.

  29. ano-nii-mus on October 12, 2010 at 7:05 pm said:

don’t let them crushing you just because of this, show them the true power of anime fansubs, just do your subs base on your on policy and if some people ask you why this or that just say to them

    thank you and cheers

  30. Anonymous on October 12, 2010 at 7:09 pm said:

What pisses me off about this release isn’t that they subbed “biribiri” as “Sparky,” it’s that “Sparky” still isn’t a correct translation in terms of intention.
If you honestly wanted to preserve everything that “biribiri” means, the best possible translation would be “Zappy”

  31. Paxton on October 12, 2010 at 7:11 pm said:

@EA : How can you state “true fan” like what version most compared to another ? I mean, what’s a “true fan” in the first place ? Some kind of retard that like only literal translation that wouldn’t even come to mind when speaking in real life (and I mean English language and way of speaking of course) ?
Guess I’m just a regular fan then. Saying “I’ll still take your script and remove all the effort you took to adapt the language just because it makes it not fan enough” is just plain stupid. If you’re not happy with it, just go and make the whole show… but I guess it’ll be consuming too much time and effort when you can just rip it from another group, and BTW nice post pissing in a violin for a blog with only one fu**ing release, not even giving credits (50/50 as you say). To me you are just a group of arrogant fags (and I’m not particularly a “fan” of whichever group)
On topic : Too bad you decided to drop the joint with gg, I mean they have this sticking troll image but can do some decent work though. Can’t wait for your future releases (be it joint or not).
PS : Sorry for the “harsh” answer to EA, but those people get on my nerves easily, feel free to remove if needed. (BTW Sparky is just a perfect fit nickname, sticks well with her character).
*If I was gonna remove anything, it’d be HIS post. No worries, bro.

Well considering the history behind GG, it was only common and expected to have that sort of negative feedback. Even though there might of been accurate translations on UTW’s part, that wouldn’t stop GG from butchering it with piss-poor editing. Take yibis for example and their bad editing :p

  41. I had always been a [gg] fan in the past since I first watched Code Geass, however in recent years, they decided to troll in many releases, so my view towards them take a toll too. I understand the fact the all of you guys (including [gg]) are doing this for free, but the fact that they don’t value the taste of fans, lack respect for a culture which brings us the thing we love so dearly ‘anime’ and like to troll in releases are the main reasons for all the backlashes they receive.
with this recent incident, it is clear that they have lost a chunk of respect from the anime fanbase. regardless, they are a big group and I think majority still want them to stay, because they are on of the speediest groups out there (probably the quickest to release). I only wish they could show some respect to the community to get back the respect they deserve.
[UTW], although very new, on the other hand is one of my favourite groups over the last 15 years. It is unfortunate that you took a good portion of the rage just because your release was tagged with [gg].
Anyways, I hope you guys keep on working on great shows, and bring us quality stuff for a long long time. Thank you.

  42. From gg’s website:
Afaik, the staff will remain the same which includes the staff from gg (Yumi and goof) remaining on-board as the encoder and typesetter.
I guess the only real change is the editing, since the editor can’t let gg take the fall for his shit.
No, not really. The only change would be what’s stated in the post above. The editing was changed a bit (the problems made before were identified), and the font was changed as well.

  43. stuff up on October 12, 2010 at 7:26 pm said:

Disregard this bitches, gg-UTW had a wonderful translation/editing of index II.
I saw and compared both gg-UTW and ayako’s release. HAVE YOU? HAVE YOU BITCHES? though so.
I bet that if no one said anything about honorifics, names and whatever, most of you bitches wouldn’t ever notice.
Those faggots talk bad about gg because they are actually a very important group in fansubing.
    Names
    Honorifics
Stuff my little sister would rage about, if I had one.
So yeah, all those bad comments where just nitpicking bitches

  44. personally I don’t care if biribiri is translated into sparky or leave it be in japanese as biribiri because it’s more like a nickname. And I haven’t watch the gg-utw joint release for index II yet. I had only watch ayako but there’s been many hate lately that I started to check it out.
as for changing fukou da translation of such misfortune and how unlucky. I think their is no difference -_-
honestly why does most people start some small problem and turn it into a huge one.

  45. Doesn’t all this ridiculous drama make you wanna ragequit?
    It does.

  46. Thanks for the efforts you put in redoing the script , i was wondering which group to go for on this show .Now that you have redone it the choice is a lot easier .Thank you UTW.

  47. Still Sparky? FUCK_YOU!!
    I’ll enjoy my alternative.

  48. lol… Eclipse just released as well. 😛

  49. My love for you cannot be stopped, Kusion. I only wish I had the power to protect that smile. no homo

  50. “allow me to remind you that “Biribiri” means absolutely nothing in English”
Fans don’t want “biribiri” for its meaning, but for its sound. It’s a nickname that possesses a big “moe” factor, so people instantly got attached to it. It’s true that there are people who don’t care (I don’t care), but for those who care, it makes a difference.
Also, fans don’t want to be trolled. They seek for groups that never troll, that’s why everyone liked Eclipse (along with a decent quality of course), and so far, they like you (including me, you could easily become the best group ever). Many were afraid they couldn’t trust you anymore. Fans are sensitive, as grotesque as it may be …
I’m happy you don’t spend resources on karaoke, it’s a useless thing imo, are there people who actually sing the op/ed songs blabbering japanese nonsense ? (I don’t want to hear the answer…)
And I’m happy for the restored UTW style, since I was used to it.
I’m impressed you guys went so far as dropping the joint with gg, but that’s definitely a thing that shows, or better, confirms that you really care for your leechers.
I really hope that going solo wouldn’t make your work more difficult … as many others, I’d like to know you have as much fun doing funsubs as me watching them.
tl;dr: thanks for everything you have done and are still doing for the anime community.
    Sincerely,
    a fan

I think Sparky is a great name for Misaka Mikoto. It has a certain cute perkiness to it, and is suitably disrespectful and patronizing.
Rather than being a dog’s name, I tend to associate it with either: a) A Radio Officer (as in spark transmitter); or, (b) An Electrician (for obvious reasons). That’s probably due to having worked in the Merchant Marine/Offshore industries for the past 30-odd years!
    Remember guys… Nil illegitimi carborundum.

It’s sad seeing how the anime fandom has gone shittier with the years, I think it’s time for them to get a reality check, so I think it would be fun if every group subbing this dropped it. Of course, fansub is an e-dick contest so that’ll never happen, but still, it would be fun~

Thanks for the release, and don’t let haters get you down.
You have to understand though, the western anime fanbase has been through bullshit from gg and anymore I feel the majority of us would like to simply forget about them (although they did push the quality of fansubs to the extreme and make the industry what it is today).
I support everything else you mentioned in the post and I’m happy you chose to keep subbing the show instead of dropping it due to stupid people being stupid. Thanks again.

  62. You know, if you don’t do this for yourselves, and at the same time you quite obviously don’t do this for the viewers, then why the fuck are you still subbing?

  63. Shuujin on October 12, 2010 at 8:44 pm said:

I wouldn’t say the fansbase has fallen so low, as you’re suggesting (Well, of course some have),
but rather that the fans are expecting a lot and maybe too much. Also everyone wants to have it the way he/she prefers. And the better the group is, the more they expect.
Another factor is the “getting used to” something. At least it’s like that for me. For the first season, “biribiri” was just what the subbers decided to use. So I just prefer to stay consistent and have the same now. I can’t really get to like Sparky I think.
Maybe it’s >because< it is a nickname, that it should go untranslated?
I mean litterally it would mean something like "brzztbrzzt" or similar; but that's the worst thing that could ever be written into subs. And instead of thinking up a corresponding enlgish word that maybe means something complete different, why not leave it?
You don't translate regular names into english either, do you? (Imagine "Ookami-san" as "Mrs. Wolf" and "Ringo" as "Apple"; fans would flame away)
I'm not complaining, just giving my thought. You want Sparky, we live with it. You can't change the voices so I still hear "Biribiri" =D.
After watching so many anime as I have, I turned into half otaku (lol) and really prefer as much originality as possible. I dare to assume that most watchers who have a big watched-list are like that. The worst thing still is absolute fail in translation, but there are hardly any serious groups who do that.
Also after watching so much, I understand about half of the anime-janpanese anyways and don't care much about editing like fluent lines and the like.
I'm grateful to you guys, you are a great quality group and bringing back honorfics and name order is an improvement for me. I might not like Sparky, but my main focus is on hearing anyway.

  64. hey guys again thx for ur upload and despite the whole discussion im not watching gg animes so i wont make any statements about ideals or something and im pretty much ok with any name u wanna give misaka ^^
the only thing i really cant understand is point 5 it has nothing to do with catchphrases or anything but fukou really means misfortune but well whatever that fact alone wont stop me from watching ur stuff ^^ so far thx again

  65. Shit subs are shit

  66. My god… some of you people need to stop watching anime and go back to repeat-watching Twilight whilst cutting yourselves. Baaaaaw!
I read an earlier comment that condemned UTW for trolling the fans? Are you f*king serious? Go back and re-read the shite the supposed fans posted in the original Index thread and tell me who was trolling who. The reason Eclipse never dealt with that shite is because they didnt blog-entry their releases and accept comments… its times like this I can see why.

  67. 1. Honorifics are restored. Less work for us to use them anyway.
It’s always a good thing to have them.
    2. Eastern name order restored.
Not a big problem, but it’s nice to have it too.
    3. Still no karaoke, however. They’re unnecessary and a waste of resources.
Yeah, it’s not like anyone sings along anyways.
Please.
I personally doesn’t really care that much about this, so I don’t mind.
    5. “Fukou da” will still be rendered as “How unlucky”. Frankly, if you were expecting us to copy other sub groups in rendering recurring terms and phrases in the series, then there’s nothing we can do to help you. We’re our own autonomous group, and not a substitute.
Should be rendered as “Such Misfortune”, since that’s what we got used to, but still good.

Fuck this noise. You niggers get shows translated accurately and delivered for free. This isn’t a dialogue between fans and those actually translating it. To criticize the way a single line sounds when you don’t know dick about Japanese to begin with, and not to mention when the meaning still comes through accurately, is absolutely pathetic. How many mora does UTW or any other translator go through to translate a show in just a few hours, sometimes in the middle of the night? Back in the day, in the 90’s when anime fans weren’t insufferable cunts, this shit was unheard of. When do you plan on picking up the boxed set when it gets licensed in your country? Never, I’m sure. Anyone reading from UTW or GG realize that the majority of your “fans” are losers and ingrates. Fans getting quality for absolutely nothing in return and complaining? It’s non-contributing nothings like them that give anime such a bad stigma.

I see no reason to have to throw your hands up, admit defeat, and give into peer pressure. You could’ve easily told everybody to essentially fuck off and done it the other way, and I’m sure the more sensible folks wouldn’t really have cared.
I just figured I’d give my two cents. Do what you want, I was contributing to discussion.

  76. Haven’t watched your subs yet, but from reading this entry I suspect I’ll like them.
Agree with both “Sparky” and “how unlucky.” Sparky is hilarious and very fitting, and I absolutely hated “such misfortune.” Thank you for not resurrecting such a shitty TL.
Thank you for subbing this; I was worried no competent groups were going to. I’d rather watch raws than Ayako.

I can live with sparky, as I’ve lived with shocker- although biribiri is still my preference since it is a nickname and it’s usually better to go literal and just give a TN with those things imo. But whatever, translators choice for that.
Probably going to remux just to change “how unlucky” to “such misfortune” though. Unlucky is only the opposite of lucky, whereas misfortune covers a much broader range of what he wants to express. Misfortune takes care of both the “unlucky” and the “catastrophic/calamitous” situations that he finds himself in constantly.

  80. “Following the enormous outrage ensuing from our release, UTW has decided as a group to drop the joint with gg,”
I had to do double-take after reading this. Are you guys that sensitive to a bunch of butthurt babies?
I still enjoy the subs, and will continue to follow your guys’ releases, but dropping the joint because of something like that was pretty dumb move.

  81. ILoveYouGuysEitherWayThough on October 12, 2010 at 9:41 pm said:

I [dis]like how you call the entire anime community “low” due the the simple fact that they don’t like the crap gg does.
I personally don’t mind gg subs, I think their translations are generally more interesting than what’s actually said, but I can understand where people are coming from with their complaints. And obviously so can you if you decided to drop the joint, if you want to kiss gg’s ass beyond that, please do it without seemingly condemning the anime community that you “serve” for lack of a better term.
Everyone translates differently, there is no right or wrong way. You can’t change people’s minds by acting righteous and disappointed, because you are not right, and neither are they. You have to make the choice to either cater to the small amount of liberal-fags, or please the majority, the literal-fags. Your mistake was switching mid-game.

  82. You guys deserve the crap that you got. You were a new group that started Angel Beats and were one of the best groups subbing (on par with Mazui, SS, etc) and you succumb to gg – which the community has a lot of hate for because it wasn’t the way you were subbing previously.
Learn your lesson, shut up and go sub something

  83. Just realize that a large majority of your watchers are angsty, fat, young males with terrible complexions, scratching at their monitors refreshing for what they expect to be perfect quality. Honestly, there was nothing horribly wrong with the subtitles at all, and I even I noticed a couple blunders that might have bothered me, such as the honorifics, but does it matter? Fuck no. What I’m getting are well-fonted, mostly accurate, and speedy subtitles from a reliable team. You guys keep doing your thing, and though I’m not as much of an Index fan, I can assure you that you did just fine. Good job UTW, and yes, I’ll keep sucking your dicks.

I would like to thank you for delivering accurate, fast, and good quality subs for free. My preferences are just that–MY preferences. I feel like I might have a say if I was on board helping you guys sub, but I’m just a spectator who downloads your translations. I don’t really have the right to demand anything. The fact that you took the time and effort to redo the subs based on fan input is above and beyond, and it is much appreciated.
I also thought you explaining the reasoning for your translation choices was pretty interesting. I didn’t actually care about Sparky or How unlucky, but the reasons behind those decisions are pretty enlightening.
    I guess I’m a suck-up, but I’m sincere in my comments.

Of course they do all this for the viewers. But not for the “faggots” who keep bitching about every minor detail as though voluntary fansub groups are obligated to provide you these high quality episode releases for free. If you think you can do so much better than go create your own English subtitles for the episodes. I’m just grateful that there are groups out there who put in so much effort and dedication so Western fans can enjoy an amazing show.

  89. I guess that came from 4chan. tsk tsk tsk.

  90. Yeah. The whole ordeal was pretty disgusting. I didn’t notice a quality difference.

  91. Personally, I think “Sparky” is a cute nickname… XD

  92. Gotta make the leechers happy sometimes. If any of you don’t like it, blame them leechers ?(???)?

  93. First of all , thank you for doing this , i’m sure it will restore whatever credit you had lost with your fanbase , which I’m absolutely sure , are nor the ones that have been trolling . this theread as you at UTW can see is already infested with discontent gg members/fans , as were the comments of the first release.
    this:
    Quote
“>I was quite amused, but overall very disgusted, at the community we serve.
    then stop subbing FAGGOTS”
As You know , is not done by the UTW fans. It is a sad backlash that will sadly be prominent for these releases for some time to come.
    quote UTW:
“I was quite amused, but disgusted, at the community we serve. ”
Believe me when I say , the badmouthers , who were pretending to be either UTW fans or were genuine GG fans were all in one camp, trolling away , getting the general atmosphere down , making everyone feel miserable , chasing people away.
You can find “the community you serve” in the comments of most your other releases , where the most annoyed someone will get is when their player doesn’t play something , or there is no HD/SD version of a particular release.
As i said , there is no mistaking , the general tone of all that was said in the original thread , and aparently a lot of fallout grief here , is not at all done by the UTW fanbase.

  94. I can’t believe people made such a big issue out of this. The joint one was good, not as good as just UTW, but good. Better than Ayako at least. I guess beggars can be choosers.

  95. People need to get the fuck over trivial bullshit. The only people who might have some room to bitch are donors, but even they should realize this is a service/hobby of yours, not some contracted job agreement.
That being said, I personally like honorifics. They feel more natural I guess. So I’m happy with this change. But it was fine before anyway.
    thanks for your work.

This ? never happened.. All fake … Trolls make it up as they go along , just to create a certain atmosphere. It is disgusting.
All this is extra negativity by GG staff trolls. Really , don’t fall for it , it will all go away like a bad case of the plague. Decent people will have to be patient for a couple of days , smarten up and read over what are blatant lies.

  98. Thanks for the v2! While I might not agree with how gg does things, I won’t complain as really they’re doing it on their own time. Given a choice between a comparable sub group that doesn’t have their same subbing preferences I’ll go with the comparable, 10 times out of 10.
The way I see it is like preparing an egg. You can have it sunny side up, fried, hard boiled, etc. Each person has their preferences but fundamentally it is still the same egg, just the presentation is different.

Thanks for the subs as always, UTW.

  102. I’m already dropped Ayako and stick with you guys.
As long as you don’t do any hardsub I don’t care about anything – it’s an anime translation, not translation of official documents or something like that. So, I think, no one should complain about Biribiri or other stuff.

Karaoke would be cool, but it’s free and if you aren’t gonna do it…Oh, well. Sparky is cool, FTW!
Look guys, you do great work & it is appreciated. UTW is always my first pick. The next time someone tells you not to do a joint with whoever because they don’t like the joint choices, tell to download your long joint and complain when there’s something to complain about.
I love your encodes of Amagami SS, getting hooked on Yosuga no Sora, and can’t wait for Kuttsukiboshi pt2. That is thanks to you guys for doing good quality Fansubs.
By the way, I think instead of bases you meant basis, lol. Just kidding guys, I couldn’t help myself. Thanks again!

  107. Someone who can’t appreciate a translation into proper English only because he’s so insistent about puny details like honorifics/naming order wouldn’t benefit from “utmost quality” either.

Okay, I admit, I was kind of surprised to see Index 01 at the top of the page again. I just downloaded the original gg-joint, watched it, enjoyed it like the entertainment anime is supposed to be, and moved on. Guess I’ll throw in my two cents to add to the voices of the calmer and more rational ones here:
The only way you can tell if they chose to use elder sister instead of “onee-sama” is if you understood the Japanese audio enough to tell the difference.
In which case, why does it even matter? True, maybe elder sister doesn’t quite capture the nuances of onee-sama – but for you? You get it. So why the fuss?

@thewizardninja – Actually, you’d be surprised how many atheists actually use the word christ to help express misfortune/frustration.
Pity, I actually liked the UTW-gg translation. I suppose there’s a better chance of hell freezing over than you guys doing a second version with the UTW-gg standards. Whatever.
I’m still of the opinion that 99% of the anime community don’t know what they want in terms of a decent translation, and that the number one focus should be whether or not YOU guys are satisfied with your translation, rather what the anime community thinks (unless you guys were conflicted about the joint too – in that case, never mind). There’s a reason why one show can have multiple subgroups working on it. Then again, I guess the 1% of people who think like me don’t really matter much in the big picture.
I’m glad to see that you guys are keeping Sparky, at least. Sooo much better than that Biribiri crap.

  112. thanks!!

It is appreciated both ways though and thank you for giving those who aren’t smart enough to realize that there are other groups out there and the ones who prefer yours a chance to watch this show 🙂 cheers

Seeing that the translator and editor are both in UTW anyway, dropping the joint really does nothing much effectively, save for the fact that UTW now need to do their own typesetting. The only change is that by dropping the [gg] tag enables UTW to drop their ideals to editing as well, which hasn’t really affect the script much anyway.

I have been checking the comments and seeing what people are saying and still its stupid fucking comments about how the community’s butthurt ,stupid kids ,or how people are assholes for complaining .And comments that don’t even say THANK YOU are even worse how about less retarded shit like “I can mux “Such misfortune” myself” and saying thanks for doing what was asked instead or WHINING like little brats .

  139. Wow, i actually didn’t know that so many people were against this UTW-GG joint project. I can’t understand that people are so negative about gg >.> In my eyes their releases are decent and very watchable. Anyways thank you though for subbing this show. Now that it isn’t a joint project anymore means that you guys got to do more work right? Thanks for that. UTW is in my opinion one of the best Fansub Groups. Many other fansub groups have died, or can’t keep up the pace. UTW though combines speed, quality and fanserverce at its best!! Hope that you guys won’t quit untill your 100 years old xD

Don’t forget about the MASSIVE improvement to the sub by changing soldiers to knights. It’s really clear from the video that they are knights, so if you translate it as soldiers then people will get confused!

I felt the work between you and gg was rather solid. I do prefer having honorifics and eastern naming styles but I can do without, or just add it in myself if it becomes such a big deal. It amazes me how a lot of people flipped out over something so trivial.

Honestly, while it’s not hard for someone who really wants to change the .ass file to change it, why don’t you guys just make a second track with Biribiri, Such misfortune, and any other crap like that and be done with it? It would add all of maybe 50kb, take 5 minutes to do, and there’s obviously a demand for it. I can’t really see why you wouldn’t/haven’t done this yet; it’s probably the easiest and best solution available.

Personally, I like the way the revised script flows and reads better. While I’m used to Biribiri as a nickname, and I’ll prob always call her that, Sparky works too. I do hope that you will at least keep Kuroko’s signature “Onee-sama”. 😉
    Thanks for subbing this!

    3. Eastern name order. Perfect. I like what I hear and what I read to be the same, if possible.
    4. Sparky. Oh, douches, how ELSE can you translate Biribiri? Need I remind you that Eclipse used “Shocker” which sounds way worse? And if you say “Leave it like that”, please jump out of a plane and land anus first on a spire of Winchester Cathedral.
    5. How unlucky. A perfectly valid translation. Just because Eclipse translated it differently does not mean UTW has to use the same translation.

Same goes to biribiri, it’s just a slang as sparks sounds like “biri” in Japanese, Misaka was nicknamed biribiri as she produces sparks, thus, she’s nicknamed “sparky”. Nuff said.
In layman terms : Go to hell if you’re still whining about it. If you want it to be translated to such a specific way, GO LEARN JAPANESE AND FORM YOUR BLOODY FANSUBBING GROUP AND SUBBING THEM. Gawd.

i’ve been comparing index 2 releases, including gg-utw, and i have to say that when it comes to the translation, the gg-utw joint was pretty damn good. now i don’t know much japanese so i wont comment on whether or not it was accurate. however, the translation does seem more conversational, more natural than the other group’s releases. As for the honorifics and other issues, i’ve watched a lot of stuff gg produced and i’ve watched a lot of stuff utw produced, it’s just a matter of preference. if you don’t like it, watch something else. we get it for free, whining isn’t really an option…

The way that the project was announced was unfortunate. Many fans, on briefly reading the post, will see it like this:
    – UTW, which we all love, has allied itself with the “hated” gg
    – UTW has caved in and adopted methods which we dislike, in fact since their are no gg concessions mentioned it seems like UTW is being used by gg.
    – This will be a “more… liberal edit than usual” (here people start getting flashbacks to 4Kids and the more heinous of gg’s trollsubs)
    – and, for the coup de grace, they have renamed one of our favourite characters “sparky”, which sounds stupid and demeaning.
I did a double take when I first read the post. I felt sure that it must be a troll, as it seemed calculated to present the information in the most inflammatory way possible. On reflection, “Sparky” is appropriate, and indeed Misaka feels that “biribiri” is just as demeaning a nickname. Most likely, the style chosen was a fair and democratic compromise between the two groups. I certainly agree that in many cases, mild localization can be a good idea to preserve the flow of the dialog. Above all, people should definitely have watched the episode first before flaming about it. Nevertheless, you should have expected this, and frankly I think it’s a little unfair for you to say you are “disgusted” that people expect great things from you, or that they have strong feelings about preserving the original story and feel of a great piece of Anime.

I’m always so amazed at how people get so caught up in complaining about the aspects of japanese that they already understand like honorifics and name order that they don’t realize what they don’t understand (a.k.a. the reason they’re watching fansubs) is being translated. btw, sparky is genious : ) I think it captures the subtle degrading undertone of Biribiri that is ultimately suggesting that she needs to calm down ; )

Seriously, those two lines alone would have been enough to start trouble. Add GG trolls, lack of honorifics and a nickname that seems more appropriate on a pikachu, and prepare to watch the cyber-fallout.

  212. Between the first season and railgun , who of all the groups that subbed it did what ? I’m just curious here.. Who changed biribiri , and who kept it , and of those that changed it , to what did they change it?

  214. I missed out on this uproar. I honestly have no problem with gg and I don’t think the UTW team would do anything to undercut their overall release quality. That said, sounds like it was a real bummer to deal with all that UTW. But I guess….thanks for taking it in stride lol

I think it would depend who calls me that tbh , if it was the person I had a crush on , I’d prefer it to be the sound of an electric shock , than what the neighbor’s kid calls his dog. Then again not eveyone gets the finer details of social interactions.
Sparky or biribiri or shocker , are just minor details compared to removing honorifics , changing names around , removing japanese cultural elements and the likes.
It is a Japanese cartoon with Japanese cultural elements that intrique me and that i am interested in. I don’t want them replaced or overwritten by something else , and certainly not the American equivalent.
Of the global population about 1.8 Billion speaks and understands English.. the US is about 300 million people . I would like to think these subs are targeted at the whole english speaking part of the world and not just the US. Americans have a hard time dealing with the fact the US is only 4.5% of the world’s population , but this is beside the point.
In this world that is ever getting smaller it really does surprise me how many intolerant and xenophobic people it still contains , even amongst the younger generations , living in denial of the existance of cultures beside theirs. Governments making their populations afraid is not helping in this either. These are Japanese cartoons , be happy we live in a world we can enjoy them , and where technology makes it possible to distribute them the way they get distributed now , and we can get in touch with other cultures through these.

Yet, it seems that that would be rather a facetious point that it happens to be something a kid could call his dog. If I call someone named Allison “Ally” does that mean I’m equating them to a small, narrow area between two buildings?
As for the cultural connection you can get, I feel that while anime might help induce an interest, it hardly makes people go past the simple enjoyment of anime. It seems that people get caught up in the “cool” or novelties of anime rather than actually going that far to understand that anime isn’t really that much of a gleam into *actual* Japanese culture. In fact, I think it could ultimately end up with merely a surface interest in Japanese in a bad way as much as it could spark an interest. Honestly, there are better ways of being connected to Japanese culture than to critique subs for the simple decision of things like name order and honorifics.
I do care about them in my subs, though, but it’s a personal preference.

  221. Sorry to hear that you guys too so much crap over the release. People are just too inflexible these days when it comes to “their” subbed anime. Maybe it’s because unlike 4-7 years ago, it’s now possible to see many dozens or hundreds of anime without running into any official R1DVD subs, which routinely do the same things that the gg-UTW release did. So people get freaked the hell out at anything that deviates from the unofficial fansubbing norms, e.g. releases by gg or Shin-GX.

  222. Leon-Gun on October 14, 2010 at 6:17 am said:

Actually, not a lot of people like getting their names shortened, especially by people they are not exactly friendly with. The main issue I have with honorifics being removed and using western name equivalent is that you cringe everytime you hear the characters use them as they should. Like you’d hear them go all “Kamijyo…Touma” but the subs show the Touma part first and it doesn’t click right with you. In the case of honorifics people get more mad when no attempt is done to show the difference between the use, for example, of the more formal honorifics and the more personal ones. This are really just the more easy to spot things for sub viewers so obviously they will care a lot about them even though there’s plenty to split hairs about once you know a little more.

It’s culture , we learn , there is no use in editing it out or pretend it doesn’t happen.

Maybe it’s because I’m not Japanese, but Biribiri just sounds cool!
If I could throw lightning and the person I had a rivalry with called me that, I’d be totally cool with it. Take the same example in an English speaking country where I could shoot flames out of my hands and my rival called me Sizzlesizzle…
“Look Sizzlesizzle, I’ve got no time to play with you right now!”
I don’t know, maybe over time I’d get used to it, although if it was subbed in Japanese to the equivalent of “Zippo” it would come off a little weird, but that’s only my opinion.
Bottom line, use what ya like, it’s your project. I’m just so grateful it’s finally out and I found a good group to follow it with. 🙂

I realize I came of a bit as a whiner in my original post and it wasn’t my intention, was just about to go to sleep when I read it and made a quick reply.
But it’s great to hear they fixed translation errors. Of course the translation is worse if they keep the honorifics I can’t phantom why it wouldn’t matter. A proper localization is always better for the viewers understanding. I haven’t watched either of the releases, I’m just sad to see UTW adding the honorifics for this re-release, since it’s IMO unprofessional to keep stuff untranslated (not that fansubs are professionals since they do it for free etc.). Especially since they had gone with the right decision the first time. But they’re free to translate how they want to, I just left some feedback. Albeit not very constructive.
    @UberGodOfGalacticAwesome
What do you even mean? You do know there’s a different between formal and spoken English that can be used to give the same effect as the honorifics does. Although it’s a bit harder to translate.

  228. This is certainly not a good news to me… I just don’t understand why people cannot appreciate gg’s ideals… To me they’re one of the best subbing groups around yet they seem to be so under-appreciated… I absolutely loved the original gg-UTW release and was looking forward to more releases from this joint…

You guys were awesome enough just picking up this anime in the first place, so you got no complaints from me, as I also don’t give a rat’s ass about name ordering, honorifics or the like. It’s too silly to make a big uproar over it considering you’re not a native Japanese speaker to begin with.

    >I haven’t watched either of the releases
Then shut up. You can’t make any criticisms if you haven’t even seen the release. Besides, honorifics are insignificant, you don’t lose anything by dropping them but you don’t gain anything either. It doesn’t somehow make the translation “worse”, it’s just putting one aspect of translation (fidelity) above another (transparency), it’s nothing more than a personal preference.

  246. There are times when I think shows should be localized (like Durarara!!) in order to attain the same feeling that the Japanese viewers would have when they watch, and gg has done a good job on many of these type of shows. IMO though I feel that shows like Index has no need to be localized, because I think it’s not so good that people who don’t normally watch anime would watch it for the content. In the end I guess it’s up to the subbing group to decide who their “target market” is when they release their subs, and to consistently follow this path.
From watching Crunchyroll’s anime, I’m pretty sure that their target market are newcomers into anime. I assume that’s why they have tons of localization (e.g. Hasegawa in Gintama called D.O.R.K. instead of MADAO). If gg’s stance is localization, that is even better because now you have people localizing anime with relatively high quality FOR FREE (though they would have a much better reputation if they stop trolling). If it’s to get people into anime, while I may not choose to watch it, I’m all for it.
I’ve already watched the v1 of the first episode of Index II by gg-UTW and only the only problem I really find is that it’s going to take me a while to get used to “Sparky” – then I thought of it this way: If it’s as much of an strange name to call someone in English as it is to call someone “Biribiri” in Japanese, then I say UTW has achieved its goal. I remember when Eclipse changed “Biribiri” to “Shocker” it took me awhile to get over that too.

  247. It might seem to you that a majority of the fans complained, when the truth probably is that the majority shut the fuck up and watched your release.
Please do consider the watchers as well, not just the whiners. Reminds me of MMOs and their respective communities, geez. When western society is as good as it is, I guess some people just have to create problems.

I will respect “Sparky” as a “rendition” the moment you start “rendering” Hanako as Flower Child, Sakura as Cherry Blossom, Yuki as Snow, …
If you’re gonna be idiots, at least be consistent. And no, Biribiri being “just” a nickname is not an excuse either. Not unless you start to think that finding a suitable “rendition” for Kyon would be a fabulous idea as well.

  257. Onanymouse:
In most cases, not translating a name makes 100% sense. You’re correct about that and that is indeed what we’ve done in the past (Tenshi). However, using “Biribiri”, which is quite obviously a demeaning nickname and not a given name, flows like shit. Hence not translating it. If you don’t like it, you could always demux the script, find+replace, and re-mux.

  258. Onanymouse on October 17, 2010 at 4:56 pm said:

No need for that, as I’m following Ayako this time. Whether it flows or not is actually largely a matter of what you’re used to. As I’m used to Biribiri, “Sparky” flows like shit to me. I do agree though that it’s at least better than Eclipse’s “Shocker”.
I guess what pisses people off the most is that this whole idea gives off the impression that it did not come out as the result of hard thinking on how to best translate a certain line, but rather a deliberate troll with the intention to piss off right from the start. Why else would gg be bragging about it in their announcement post despite the name not having appeared yet at 2 episodes in? You keep justifying the decision, but apparently no one ever even tried to ease this impression, making me think it’s not so far off. Nobody raged when Eclipse did their “rendition”, and I think there wouldn’t have been much rage either if it just appeared when it’s first needed in the script (I still wouldn’t have liked it though).
Btw, why not provide two subtitle streams in the mkv? One for Biribiri and one for Sparky? Think of it as a statement of how ridiculous you think this whole argument is.
The ultimate lulz will be had if her nickname does not appear even once…

Probably this is case of a difference on cultures between east and west, as a Filipino, we kinda also use a form of honorifics to signify our relationship to people (endearment to others). It’s not a big deal to westerners but to us its a big deal, its like dropping it is equivalent to blasphemy/taboo. As a person who is so expose to western culture, its not a big deal really to watch subs that drop honorifics all together, but of course I do appreciate if they include it. Anyways thanks to the people behind UTW, I appreciate your dedication and hardwork for providing the latest and the best animes out there! 🙂

I know this is late, but your point was too ridiculous to pass up. Literally translating the names of characters based on what you hear? Come on, do you know ANYTHING about Japanese names? They don’t write based on phonetics; each name, despite their sound, is written using characters and based on those characters the names can have different meanings. So while hearing ‘Yuki’ one might think, ‘Snow’ because it’s the Japanese word for the object it could in fact be written as ‘Courage’ with that being the intended meaning!
Japanese names aren’t as straightforward in their meanings like Western names, i.e. ‘Nathaniel’ will always mean ‘God has Judged’.
Seriously, anime-fans these days are too uptight!
