Best female ghost ever, or best female ghost ever?
Here you go. The staff did some thinking together over the week, and we’ve made some changes, most notably translating 怪異調査部 as “Paranormal Investigations Club” (we used “Detective Club” last week, which on second thought is perhaps too vague). Episode 1 will be v2’d for the batch for format and terminology consistency.
fnord and Sindalf wanted to blog about stuff, but I was rushing to get to work and forgot to save copies. I guess I’ll put them up when I’m home.
EDIT: Here’s fnord’s blog on one of the lines in this episode.
There was a little discussion about a line this episode. My interpretation wasn’t persuasive enough for the rest of the team, so it was banished to the blog. Here’s my minority opinion. When Momoe recites the chant after the demon has gone into ‘hiding’, she says 「夕子さん 埋めた、柱に埋めた」, which could be a reference to an ancient Japanese practice called 「人柱」 (hitobashira). Hitobashira was a form of human sacrifice whereby some of those involved in the erection of a large structure, usually a fortress, would be buried alive to bless it and protect it from anything that might threaten its enduring presence, such as natural disasters, or, in the case of fortresses, pillaging armies (a very real threat in medieval Japan). The idea was that burying men alive within the walls of the structure would infuse it with the souls of the workers, and, since nature in Shintoism is swarming with spirits, move the building closer to the spirits and essentially make it a part of nature. A different, in literature popular explanation sees the sacrifices as the slaughter of workers that had participated in the construction of secret passages inside the fortress, and whose death would ensure the secrecy of the tunnels, thereby protecting the fortress and its lord. This is probably artistic license, especially since evidence of secret passages is unconvincing at best, but the practice of hitobashira as a whole seems largely undisputed and urban legends drawing from it persist. The reason why I am bringing this up is rather apparent if you’ve seen the episode.
After having watched it, I wanted to say that I thoroughly enjoyed it. Thanks again.
It was a nice surprise to see the production value of some of the presentation improved beyond the pilot. The fonts were nice. I also liked what you made of the karaoke for both songs.

Erm.. “kaii” 怪異 is closer to “mystery”, not “paranormal”, which is “choujou genshou” 超常現象. The kanjis don’t even share radicals.

Having read the manga beforehand, Yuuko isn’t giving off enough dere in the anime. I do hope I’ll be proven wrong in future episodes though.

Yes, it’s an important skill to have. I knew the 怪 guài from before, that’s what caught my attention. Normally I don’t really care, neither do this time. Just being helpful desu.

“Best female ghost ever, or best female ghost ever?”
That would be Honma Meiko (Menma).

I imagine that’s why it was translated as “Detective Club” in episode 1, but as you can see there’s more to translation than just rendering the literal meaning of each word.

  31. Yumi Hara is the best.

Ah, beaten to bringing Menma up but then…
…really? Menma? How about Ibuki Fuko?…no…Marianne vi Britannia?…okay I see my own point now. D:

  35. By chance have you looked at Maigo Scanlations translation of the manga? I think they use Paranormal Investigation club. http://mangafox.me/manga/tasogare_otome_x_amnesia/v01/c001/10.html
i would have used something other than mangafox, but that was the quickest at this time.

I agree with Mewmaster300, about the minority opinion. Only thing is the opinion isn’t a minority if you’ve read the manga. The subject of “human pillar” or “human sacrifice” comes up a lot in the manga, and here in the anime is the first time this term has popped up, so having confusions about it at first is normal :/

About the best ghost, I think Menma is nice too, and even Misao from (Asura Cryin’) are there…

  39. @Quazacolt
I ran a diff against the two lines. It appears the only difference is the capitalization of the first letter.
