This is a joint with GotWoot Fansubs.
I’m not sure if we’re wasting our time going ahead with this series, with the Crunchyroll simulcast and decent script (only a couple real translation inaccuracies but general derpy English). The rest of the team were practically unanimous in their desire to continue though, so… here you go!
And what a fantastic first episode it was! The visuals are to die for.
Please enjoy!
EDIT: We’ve v2’d the episode with the following changes:

• New encode: the video should be slightly better, and the audio is now truly stereo.
• Typesetting: the color issues some of you were having should be fixed. Some signs have also been tweaked.
• Karaoke: Simple karaoke effects have been added.
• Script: a few lines have been tweaked for improvement.

As the v2 uses a new encode, there will be no patch. The XviD is based on the v2 version.

@VIStrings: It covers the first 3 chapters. If you want to stay ahead of the anime, you’ll easily do so. The anime, from what I saw, will also take a lot of the side stories (so book 2, part of 8, as well as other side stories). You’ll get ahead of it very quickly.

31. limabean on July 8, 2012 at 9:08 am said:

Whew, I was incredibly anxious waiting for the release from you guys, thanks.
@VIStrings
I haven’t actually watched the episode yet, but judging by the trailer it probably incorporates part of the “Aria in the Starless Night” sidestory, along with “First Day” from volume 8. The entire series looks to span every bit of Sword Art Online content that the author has produced so far.

32. No wonder you guys were praising this show- or the novel for that matter- that much. It’s amazing and like the rest, I’m so glad you guys are doing this show. Thank you.

33. limabean on July 8, 2012 at 9:09 am said:

By every bit of SAO content I meant the parts that take place in Aincrad, sorry.
Just to clarify, that means that the series probably does not start from volume 1, which takes place in the last few weeks.

Thanks UTW, SAO is better than I expected.

41. limabean on July 8, 2012 at 9:56 am said:

@VIStrings
Alright, having watched the episode, I can see that like Cyou said it covered the first three chapters. However, after the first 3-4 chapters in the first book, it skips to the last few weeks of the events in Aincrad (the world of Sword Art Online).
In the interests of saving space, I’m going to put the rest of my comment in spoiler tags, though I don’t think they really contain any spoilers.
From the preview, I would guess that the next episode is going to start “Aria in the Starless Night”, a side-story, so I guess I would read that next if I were you?
It’s going to be difficult to keep exactly ahead of the anime, because some parts may not follow chronological order, and may instead be flashbacks — there is at least one arc that would probably work best as a flashback in my opinion.
However, if you want to try to stick to the chronological order of things, on the Baka-Tsuki site (where you can of course find nearly every piece of SAO content translated), there is a timeline that you can take a look at. In addition, the side stories (including the ones in volumes 2 and 8) have dates in their titles that look like this: (Aincrad 1st floor, November 2022). Since they progress through the floors, you could read the stories by order of floor.
For example, if the next episode is indeed “Aria” then that would be (Aincrad 1st Floor, December 2022), next you would move on to Aria’s continuation, which takes place on (Aincrad 2nd Floor, 4 December 2022) , etc.
It might just be best to read all of the Aincrad content as quickly as you can though, meaning Volumes 1, 2, and 8 (only read the chapters labeled as Aincrad or (SAO Side Story)), along with the side stories and Sword Art Online: Material Editions, all of which you can find on the Baka-Tsuki website, of course.
Reading “Aria of the Starless Night” will probably give you another couple weeks or so to read the rest, by the way (as far as I can figure).
To clarify, only Volumes 1, 2, and 8 contain Aincrad (Sword Art Online) content. The other volumes pertain to Kirito’s experiences after Aincrad. so don’t worry about those for now, since as far as I know, we’re not sure if the anime is going to cover the novels aside from Aincrad.
44. VIStrings on July 8, 2012 at 10:10 am said:

Thank you so much for the in-depth explanation! I’ll finish chapter 3 and 4 today and then watch it, and in the next couple of weeks I’m going to try and read volumes 1, 2 and 8 (only the SAO parts) before watching any other episode. I didn’t know there was a translation so I’ve been reading it in Japanese but I guess I’ll stick with it for now, unless it gets too complicated for me to follow. Still, the anime will help if I miss anything so it’ll probably be fine.

Considering how extensive the events in Aincrad itself are (main arc+side stories), I’d be worried about the pacing for the Aincrad arc itself with just 25 episodes.

62. UTW’s time wasted? NEVAAAAA! Everything you guys do is gold and irreplaceable, and for every comment here, remember there are a hundred more leechers out there thanking UTW for your branded releases, so long live UTW!

63. Akaz on July 8, 2012 at 2:11 pm said:

That will definitely be epic. Instead of Sword Art Online, it’ll be known as Gold Farming Online, LOL

64. Nayu on July 8, 2012 at 2:23 pm said:

@Strifer
Why is that? Take Shakugan no Shana for example. It covers 22 volumes in 72 episodes (that means ~3 episodes = 1 volume).
Toaru is more or less the same. The “slowest” pacing on LN adaptions I’ve ever seen was 5 episodes per volume. The SAO anime will probably cover 6-7 Volumes, which is long past the Aincrad arc.

65. Jikap on July 8, 2012 at 2:32 pm said:

Thx a lot for this! while they still haven’t listed where it’s available on CR, It’s definitely not available in Norway. ;>_>

<3 All of your UTW! except for steins T_T

67. Nayu on July 8, 2012 at 3:02 pm said:

I don’t think whether CR simulcast is available in your country or not is an issue here. If you want to watch CR’s release, you can grab HS like literally a couple of minutes after airing and if you want to watch the simulcast, use a proxy server.
I’ve always been wondering why streaming sites bother limiting the stream to certain countries since it’s child’s play to bypass all measures taken to prohibit people from certain countries accessing the stream.
Still, it is worth the effort, but for an utterly different reason. The CR guy who translated this didn’t make any major derps as far as I can tell, but the subs had really bad flow and unsightly English here and there. I highly doubt the translator read the light novels judging from the translation and this is what will make nuances go into the wrong direction as the show progresses while a translator who enthusiastically immersed himself into the novels will likely get it right and make the subs flow better overall. Apart from that, for some reason the CR rip video encode was shit (I can see weird clustering here and there and there were a couple of times I thought man, too much deblocking. Plus the 1080p is some shitty upscale)
So overall I can confidently say that UTW’s release is definitely better. If it was ‘Kono naka ni hitori, imouto ga iru” the gain clearly would not outweigh the put in labor and consumed time, but as it is SAO were’re talking about, even a mere 1% quality gain would make the effort justified. That’s how awesome SAO is :<

@Nayu I’m not sure, but I think Spice and Wolf was like ~2 novels/12 episodes? That would average to around 6 episodes/novel, but that pacing was perfect for the show. Nothing really seemed “rushed”, compared to the source material.

100. It’s quite sad knowing that people only judge story from it’s anime only.. Sword Art Online has a brilliant storytelling in the Novel.. Whilst the anime version (should) excels in visual..

101. @eternalrain Spice and Wolf didn’t feel to rushed. But it defiantly went much faster than it should of the second season just kept jumping from one part to the next without even a seconds pause.

102. Oh no way. UTW is doing SAO? Jeeze I missed out! I really hope they keep this true to the Light Novels. They’ve been good aside from a few minor details.

Well… if u don’t want to uninstall CCCP.
Here’s what I did (I was too lazy to uninstall CCCP):
1. Download the latest offcial FFDShow.
2. Open up the installer.
3. It’ll set it’s directory area to CCCP’s FFDShow. If not, you can try and set it up manually.
4. After installing, follow the instructions on those pictures up top.
5. The video decoder should appear as a tray icon with other icons at the bottom-right of your computer screen.
6. Check and see if those boxes are still there or not.
7. If the problem still persists… Do the other stuff GotWoot mentioned. (RECOMMENDED)

Calling it now, best anime of the season

108. The story will get better in a while. It seems that this anime version of Sword Art Online is sorted out all episodes of book version based on time line. The production companies are doing similar orientation with Accel World. This is all because this same author writes additional story along with the main story so that those short stories would explain the lacking parts in the main story. Anyway, SAO series was once stayed as the most popular web novel in all categories in Japan based on weekly public voting among over 500 novel sites for over 2 years. However, somehow publishing companies sis not think that SAo could be sold well, It took almost 7 years for the book to be published in paper form and 3 mores years to be anime. The main problem seems to be the theme of the story which was too new for the time period. Personally, I think that the stories are interesting enough for continuous support. I assume that these 2 seasons would cover for Part 1. I am pretty sure that Part 2 would be made later on. Part 3 and Part 4 are questionable. So, as xAtKx commented, it could be the best anime of the season.

109. hint: Akihiko Kayaba appears at the end roll part of the show.

No, no, you can’t possibly be wasting time. After all, two great subbing groups joined together make the best subbing group. Just look at the ratings on fansubs. Anyway, thanks for subbing it, UTWoots! Can’t really wait for next episode 😑

111. hello on July 9, 2012 at 12:35 pm said:

My guess is that the next episode will feature vol1 ch4 onwards until around the when Cradil calls Kirito a Beater (chapter 5, 6 or 7) and then he will remember the events of Aria in the Starless Night (flashback arc). Beacause the mention of the word Beater comes at the very end of Aria. It would take more than one episode to cover the Aria Side Story so the name Beater would have been wrong for the episode unless mentioned.

Who cares about the subs, and whether Crunchy’s are good or not – your encodes are to die for! I would seriously still religiously download from you if you only released the video without the sub file. The encode is literally the only reason I download fansubs instead of raws these days, ever since the change to 10bit.

116. @Den, yeah, that is why it took several years of .hack and other series becoming possible for them to realize: oh hey, this might actually work.
But I really do hope UTW does this. My favorite (active) group (probably my favorite group period but without the same shows, hard to compare) doing a show I’ve been looking forward to for years?
That being said, no pressure but if you can sub this one, please do XD.

117. TheWingless on July 9, 2012 at 6:08 pm said:

@Larnu
To fix the problem, you go into: View>Options>Under Subtitle, Default Style>Check under “Screen Alignment & Margins” Make sure there’s is a checkmark for “Position subtitles relative to the video frame” and that it’s not a filled box or empty.
No need to uninstall then install CCCP, although CCCP works just as well if not better.

Is gotwoot yanking our chains by saying that CCCP isn’t good enough on it’s own for this release and that we now need xy-vsfilter as well? as i don’t see why these problems would occur in the first place. What do you guys recommend? as you guys don’t say anything about changing filters.

MPC-HC dev here. I was kindly asked to drop a message here after someone noticed the talk about the internal subtitle renderer.
The subtitle problems with the current beta and stable releases of MPC-HC are well known.
I’ve been working on the set of internal renderers for a while now. I’ve edited the internal subtitle renderer and solved the issues with aspect ratio correction, shearing, rotation, positioning and some performance issues.
The code is in the alpha stage of development right for now, but the builds are fine for daily use:
http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=161047&goto=newpost .
In this development thread I try to improve the internal renderers set of MPC-HC. I’ll happily take feature requests, analyze bug reports and do a bit of general chatting about related things. For those that would rather like to contact me trough e-mail, my e-mail address is stated in the “Authors.txt” file of any recent MPC-HC release.
I’ll post a duplicate of this message in the comment section of this release on the GotWoot? site as well, as the noted discussion seems to be similar over there as well.

Finally got around to watching this. Think they did the first episode well enough, with one ‘error’ being that kirito claimed to have only gotten to floor 8 when in the novels he got to floor -10- during the beta, but I’m really not digging the way they’re going for the 2nd episode.
.
To me, what they’ll be putting in ‘beater’ would have worked better as a flashback after introducing the Asuna the <> and kirito the <> we’ll be seeing over the course of the series. To show us ‘beater’ right away kills some of the mystery/hidden depth their characters had in volume 1 of the novels. Plus, ‘beater’ as episode 2 means no ‘first day’ episode unless they flashback -that- which…makes a lot less sense than flashbacking the sidestory they’ll use for ‘beater’. Overall, iffy on this studio but hopeful.
.
Long story short, I’d recommend that anybody who liked this should read volume 1 of the light novel -before- watching episode 2, even if only the first few chapters after the events covered by the first episode. If not, skip episode 2 and watch it later. To me the story is just so much better without knowing anything about early asuna until later and, to a lesser extent, kirito. As a comparison, inserting ‘beater’ here is like inserting the kiritsugu alimango flashbacks at the beginning of fate/zero, even if in terms of ‘going against the ln’ it’s a more vague situation.
