Welcome to the first episode of Suisei no Gargantia! I’ve been a huge fan of Gen Urobuchi’s previous anime productions, both from a viewer and fansubber’s perspective, so I’m thrilled to be able to bring you his latest work alongside such a great team across both UTW and Vivid. I hope you’re as excited to see where this show goes as I am.
Apologies for the unusually large file size for the HD release this week – the first half of the episode is almost all action scenes, which come with a heavy bitrate cost. Things will probably settle down a bit in future weeks.
Without further ado, enjoy!

What’s so wrong with psycho-pass? It wasn’t as good as fate/zero but it still was an awesome distopya with believable characters. It was nice and intelligent. Not so epic, but i wouldn’t deem it as a certain disadvantage.

+ one for psycho pass. It is the best Noitamina show in awhile. But whatever, it’s a question of preference I guess. My only complain is that towards the end it wasn’t wrapped up correctly, it didn’t felt rushed but some elements tasted artificialness.

  20. Axiom on April 7, 2013 at 5:52 pm said:

    @Avestus
That’s the problem. Psycho-Pass wasn’t deep or intellectual. It was a mediocre future cop thriller at best and a poor Urobuchi work in comparison to Madoka and Fate.
Among the worst problems, they introduce Sibyl as something that might not be ethical but never bother providing enough evidence to allow for an argument in either direction. Even the deeper-esque plot lines with the internet and the artist girl were extremely half-baked for the themes they were trying to convey.
Even Makishima and Kogami themselves were philosophical strawmen. They threw out quotes that never had any deeper discussion and weren’t even relevant half the time.
Basically, Psycho-Pass was a somewhat enjoyable imitation of a psychological/philosophical work, but it didn’t even scratch the surface in comparison to Ghost in the Shell, Madoka, Fate, Evangelion, ect.

  35. I enjoyed this one much more than I had expected, yet another show I look forward to this season.
When watching the first part, it reminded me of when saving JPEG images. When saving some images with certain colors, especially red colors, it was hard to avoid artifacts using 4:2:0. Using 4:4:4 seemed to be a better strategy for those images.
Seeing the first part made me wonder if this also applies to video, as that part was pretty heavy on those colors, while having quite a bit of movement. So maybe hi444p could help? (Just trowing out random ideas though, JPEG and MPEG-4 is not the same after all…)

    >Seeing the first part made me wonder if this also applies to video, as that part was pretty heavy on those colors, while having quite a bit of movement. So maybe hi444p could help?
Problem is, encoding from TS means dealing with a lowpassed 1440X1080 4:2:0 mpeg2 stream.
4:4:4 will not help much if the chroma resolution is not there.
Moreover you will increase the filesize, increase encoding and decoding time a lot (you are basically encoding two times the pixels) and change the typesetting workflow (you need to typeset in bt709 instead of the common, and hackish, bt601).
Not worth the effort when the source is already pretty low quality to begin with (and upscaling the chroma will surely not help much).

  41. @Chibi Goku
    Yeah pretty much.
The chroma on a 1440x1080i60 YV12 broadcast is probably roughly equivalent to 720×270 chroma planes, seeing as the hard telecining/mpeg2 encoding completely destroys it vertically. YV24 would be completely pointless in this case.

  42. Thanks for the subs, this looks like a good one to follow this season.

  49. shani on April 8, 2013 at 3:17 am said:

I know MAL, ANN etc. have Red instead of Ledo. But the official site does not. Does Red/Ledo/Led/Redo make any difference if the only clue we have is レド? We probably will never see “Red” appearing in any written form such as on the HUD of the mecha or anything else, like a letter, news etc. since both languages are likely to be way too far from using roman letters or katakana. It’s not Gundam Unicorn where you cannot write Banaaji Rinkusu instead of Banagher Links.
As for honorifics, I prefer without the use of any honorifics in settings those are obviously not Japan. The only thing I don’t like is swapping naming conventions because it’s kind of annoying while reading the subtitles. These are just my personal preferences. Everyone has their own preferences. 😉

@odinigh soooo, according to you, we just rename MC however we want?
i’ve been watching anime for a long time and i know it’s not always easy. And yes, keeping it consistent, but it’s confusing when there’s official names out there and others are used in the subs. And i am by now way complaining about UTW or anything, they do an amazing job, and i consider their english sub quality top notch.
Just to give you an (bad) example for names:
    Kingdom
Hadena subs, for whatever reasons (yes everyone kows what hadena subs stand for…), used some old ancient names, to keep in line with some history bullcrap as opposed to in-anime names, so
Shin became Xin for example(and every cast in therea>.>).

God, everyone so anal about the guys name. It’s not the fansubbers fault that Japanese have to bastardize every foreign language so they can fit it into katakana/hirigana syllable structure.
The guy’s name is Red. However they pronounce using katakana. レッド = which sounds the equivalent to “Ley DOH”.

I actually liked Psycho-Pass a lot, *especially* the ending. No, it wasn’t an especially good dystopia, and there were some pretty severe animation derps, but as a coming-of-age-story for adults, it was top notch.
About this show, though, um, please tell me I’m not the only one who caught the Firefly reference at the end? It was so perfect.

  56. Anonymous on April 8, 2013 at 6:47 am said:

The story looks as though it will be significantly interesting! *happiness* Given the author, it will almost certainly also be horribly depressing, but that is an acceptable price.
Now then, what form will the unfolding storyline take, I wonder… “They told us Earth was destroyed by the enemy long ago, but they LIED.”? “The ‘enemy’ are actually the tools of the main force of humanity.”? A strong smell of deliberate deception, in any case. I can’t hope for a happy ending, but I can hope to enjoy the process of whatever the story contains. *smiles*

At the very least it is enough for a v0 release and then when the episode airs in a week you can release it again with the better quality version.

Since Sword Art Online i was really bored. SAO was such an amazing show that no show so far could be compared with it (from the storyline point of view).
So Gargantia is the only show so far with such great potential in the story that it can be easily compared with SAO.
This show is so amazing, that only BD can fit it all.

have you seen Macross Frontier ? or maybe Black Lagoon ? HSotD ? Gosick ? Madoka ? Psycho-Pass ?
If you’re bored, then why not search for some older, yet very good anime ?
The real problem is not “Is there anything good out there” but “I don’t have enough time in my life for that many …”
    @Kitty:
    as for tongue vs language:
tongue – part of human body, something physical made of cells
language – set of rules (grammar) and words used to communicate between two things. Be it English, French or C#. You don’t need tongue to use language.
That’s how I understand it, I don’t want to offend you, I’m not stating who’s right or wrong. There’s also that little thing called ‘usus’, which means there are always exceptions. Maybe this is the case.
    As for ep2.
I can only ask as a fan UTW to do that as v0, but I wont 😉 I just can’t wait to see it.
And btw. BIG THANKS FOR THE BEST SUBS !

This show!! I’m not really that much into mecha but it looks awesome. At first I thought the filesize was quite large but after watching I wished it was even larger. Though I’m assuming those artifacts are present in the TS already…
@Komandos, both use of “tongue” and “language” is acceptable when referring to the language spoken, e.g.; mother language or tongue. Language is merely more common. I used to think using “tongue” was wrong, because it looked like a literal translation from my mother language, Russian, which uses “tongue” to refer to both the language and the organ. However, multiple English teachers corrected me that it was indeed acceptable to use both.

The second part, well feels like innocence shrouded with hint of conflict, malice and conspiracy; akin what Gen did with Madoka. At some places tongue can really be linked as way of meaning language. As for example Brasil.
Tongue= Língua (part of human body )
When refering to our language we use: “Língua Portuguesa” or “Português” to describe it.
Ex: when asking about other country language: “Qual Língua é falada no Japão ?”. (Can be used a synonym too “Linguagem”) But you will hear most people saying “Língua” in this case.

  84. Anonymous of Word Choice on April 9, 2013 at 10:26 am said:

I’ve never heard anyone say “mother language” before. UTW made the right choice with “mother tongue.”

Ehhh… I think I’ll just buy another 2TB drive for this season. JP broadcasting stations are really stepping up the bit-rates. Can’t wait for 4k to replace HD……

Would you guys consider making a V0 from the early-release blurays? Someone made an attempt that was posted at http://www.animetake.com/suisei-no-gargantia-episode-2 that has good quality video, but their subs are hard to watch.

Derp. I’m sorry I want to clarify that I was suggesting a V0 of episode 2.
