Hi. I’d like to know how you guys are able to preserve your styled subs in your mp4 releases. I want to convert my matroska video files with styled soft subs to mp4 while maintaining the styled subs. As much as I just want to change the container, I would lose the styled subs. I want to preserve the video and audio format with the styled subs burned to the video. I have WinFF here but I don’t know how I can do this. When I used FormatFactory, the subs were messed up: font, font size, and positioning changed. I wanna watch my anime on the HTS at home but it doesn’t support h264 in mkv containers. It only supports divx in mkv or h264 in mp4. Thanks in advance.

You need to add the subs to the video stream during encoding using something that’s VSFilter compliant.
I usually use the TextSub filter in Avisynth for this, though it does require that you have the fonts installed for them to render correctly (so you’ll need to demux them from the mkv and install them first – there’s probably a better way to go about this but I never got around to working them out)
Then to hardsub, demux the subs from the mkv and make an avs file containing something like this:
    FFVideoSource(“path_to_video_file.mkv”)
    TextSub(“path_to_subs.ass”)
Pass that to x264 using something like avs2yuv or a GUI like MeGUI, encode the video (eg –crf 18 –tune animation –preset veryslow) and just mux it with the audio from the original release. This is assuming you’re re-encoding something to hardsub it – if you’re encoding from the original source, more the better. You can just put TextSub in your avs script.

  4. Thanks for more Taidaima !!
@bobon, if you somewhat understand what Xythar’s talking about, the general idea is using avisynth and re-encoding. Rather than his script, you could also use
    DirectShowSource(“path_to_video_file.mkv”)
if you have (xy)VSfilter on auto-load in your splitter i.e. Haali, you’ll have subtitles working and can re-encode the video stream and mux the audio stream into a new file with hardcoded subtitles.

That seems a bit too troublesome for 11-25 conversions. Is there no batch method? I’m converting a whole season tonight while I’m AFK.

    Thanks! 😀

  7. @bobon if you want the styled subtitles to be perfect, I really think it’s best to make 11-25 scripts, run them overnight and then mix the audio in 11-25 times. Not that much of a bother. There might be some magic batch method, though, I don’t know.
Also, this episode was kind of bad. 13 better be awesome.

Whenever I see Uchida I can’t help but think that poor girl is going to get raped. Being that cute and that stupid is just asking for the camp consoler or creepy uncle to take advantage of you.

@bobon721 If you want to convert .mkv to hardsubbed mp4 for portable devices, I suggest using HandBrake. While slightly less quality then by doing it manually via meGUI/avisynth, it’s a lot fucking easier, and has batch support.

  17. @herlpe Handbrake will use libass, which will break a good bit of typesetting. RipBot264 uses VSfilter I believe, but that requires fonts to be installed.

@anon it’s not very good at animated subs – it only burns in the subtitle halfway through its animation, but its still perfectly watchable as a disposable portable encode. Definitely not for archival though.
