Well, here you go. It’s late, but it’s done.
We have a new ghost story this week, some plot development… and of course, more of what Ghost Yomi does best: be delicious.
P.S.: I hate delays. They eat away at my soul.
P.P.S.: My apologies for causing delays beyond the translator unavailability on this. Being sick and having tons of fansubbing to do really sucks. -Daiz

This episode covers one of the most emotional scenes in the Fate/Zero novel. I suppose they did a pretty swell job animating it, though some of the devices they used felt a little forced to me.
Please enjoy the episode!

Best female ghost ever, or best female ghost ever?
Here you go. The staff did some thinking together over the week, and we’ve made some changes, most notably translating 怪異調査部 as “Paranormal Investigations Club” (we used “Detective Club” last week, which on second thought is perhaps too vague). Episode 1 will be v2’d for the batch for format and terminology consistency.
fnord and Sindalf wanted to blog about stuff, but I was rushing to get to work and forgot to save copies. I guess I’ll put them up when I’m home.
EDIT: Here’s fnord’s blog on one of the lines in this episode.
There was a little discussion about a line this episode. My interpretation wasn’t persuasive enough for the rest of the team, so it was banished to the blog. Here’s my minority opinion. When Momoe recites the chant after the demon has gone into ‘hiding’, she says 「夕子さん 埋めた、柱に埋めた」, which could be a reference to an ancient Japanese practice called 「人柱」 (hitobashira). Hitobashira was a form of human sacrifice whereby some of those involved in the erection of a large structure, usually a fortress, would be buried alive to bless it and protect it from anything that might threaten its enduring presence, such as natural disasters, or, in the case of fortresses, pillaging armies (a very real threat in medieval Japan). The idea was that burying men alive within the walls of the structure would infuse it with the souls of the workers, and, since nature in Shintoism is swarming with spirits, move the building closer to the spirits and essentially make it a part of nature. A different, in literature popular explanation sees the sacrifices as the slaughter of workers that had participated in the construction of secret passages inside the fortress, and whose death would ensure the secrecy of the tunnels, thereby protecting the fortress and its lord. This is probably artistic license, especially since evidence of secret passages is unconvincing at best, but the practice of hitobashira as a whole seems largely undisputed and urban legends drawing from it persist. The reason why I am bringing this up is rather apparent if you’ve seen the episode.
“Epic” doesn’t even begin to describe this episode. I can’t remember the last time I watched anything quite as jaw-droppingly fabulous as this.
It’s a shame the nico subs were pretty poor this week. Awkward phrasing aside, they also managed to butcher the accuracy of an alarming number of lines this episode. It’s a wonder their translator/editor hasn’t been fired yet.
Anyway, do enjoy the episode! It’s back to some more Mahoyo for me.

Moshi is probably hitting up chicks in Tokyo University at the moment and it’s way past fnord’s bedtime, so I’ll write up this release post in their stead.
Here’s the first episode of our third project of the season, a joint with sister group Underwater. I’ve never worked on an episode quite like this before, but despite the :effort:, it proved to be quite a lot of fun to sub. Hopefully you’ll enjoy it just as much as we did!

After a grueling four-month wait, the UTW team is happy to present you with the 14th episode of Fate/Zero! We are once again treated to jaw-dropping visuals (those aerial battles, omfg) and pretty much top-tier quality in every respect.
And that new ED… simply amazing. Really, really good. The music, the lyrics, the visuals… everything. All the more so if you’ve listened to the drama CD that came with the season 1 BDs. ;_;
Anyway, that’s enough blogging from me. Enjoy this episode!

We’ve decided to go ahead and sub this show (for now) despite the hulu stream. A US-only hardsubbed low-res stream isn’t exactly what we consider up to standard, let alone their terrible marketing decision to let absolutely nobody know about it until airtime. They should be glad they don’t have any real competitors in the market.
At any rate, please enjoy the first episode!
P.S.: If you’re wondering why the video seems to cut off early at the end, it’s not our fault. That’s how it was broadcasted.
P.P.S.: Direct Link!
P.P.P.S.: 8thsin, translator for this release, wrote up a pretty insightful blog post on this episode. You can check it out HERE.

Here are the BD batches for the Fate/Zero Season 1 Bluray Box, which contain:
- Episodes 1-13 (UTW subs; the R1 subs are still terrible and therefore not included in this release)
- Please! Einzbern Consultation Room Specials 1-3
- Drama CD 1 + English Translation Scripts
Most of the episodes contain extra scenes scattered throughout. There were no commentary tracks whatsoever.
We’re still chugging along with putting art to the drama CD tracks, but this will probably take a month or two to complete. For now, please make do with the translations.
And that’s it! See you guys for the first episode of Season 2 this weekend!
Spring 2012 Plans
We have decided to pick up the following:
- Fate/Zero Season 2
- Accel World
- Tasogare Otome x Amnesia
Whether we actually end up working on the latter two shows is still subject to CR/nico/funi simulcasting.
There is another show that we’re still considering whether or not to do; if we do decide to go ahead with it, you’ll find out what it is when we release it.
Happy 2nd Birthday, UTW!
Today marks the day UTW officially turns two years old!
UTW has come a long, long way since its creation, and it is the industriousness of the staff and your enduring and enthusiastic support over the years that keeps UTW going day by day. Thank you all, staff and fans alike, for making UTW what it is today!
To celebrate the occasion, I figured I’d share a few statistics pertaining to what we’ve achieved these past two years:
- We’ve subbed 16 complete weekly series (excluding 6 movies and 3 OVAs/OVA series), which is about 2 per season.
- That’s 270 separate full-length episodes (excluding movies and including OVAs and episodes of ongoing series), which is about 33 per season.
- Our release file count currently sits at 737, which is about 92 per season.
- We’ve released 346GB worth of anime, which is about 43GB per season.
- The current number of active staff is 8. We’ve never had more than that, either.
Those numbers probably pale in comparison to older and/or bigger groups, but it’s pretty incredible to think that we’ve come so far having just subbed 16 complete TV series with such a small staff. I believe it speaks volumes about how we work and the values we represent.
None of us were free or bored enough to set up some elaborate April Fool’s joke yesterday, so I guess that’s unfortunate for those of you who enjoy that sort of thing. I was also going to announce our Spring 2012 plans in this post, but we’ve decided to wait a little longer to see how things play out; we’ll probably make the announcement in 2-3 days.
Here’s to another year! Happy 2nd Birthday, UTW!
