So I finally got off my lazy butt and threw the Hidan no Aria batches together.
None of the SD releases have been changed. I didn’t really need to v2 any of the HD releases either, but I did for three of the episodes to fix the following:

 • Episode 1: “Baretta” –> “Beretta”
 • Episode 2: “And I thought the Kinji the Dark…” –> “And I thought Kinji the Dark…”
 • Episode 9: “Why would you want to know what?” –> “Why would you want to know that?”

TL;DR I v2’d three episodes to fix a typo in each. This is of course necessary since we really care about Hidan no Aria and want people to have the perfect viewing experience etc.
The Ano Hana batches do need quite a bit of work, though, so we’re hoping to release that in a week or two.

Hello everyone, I have recently joined this group as a translator, and my first project will be Kamisama no Memochou. This first episode turned out to be extremely enjoyable for me, since it’s like modern Gosick without deus ex machina solutions. Please enjoy!
This is my very first release post, so I thought I should take this opportunity to make a proper introduction.
I have been a fansubber since 2005, starting with Japanese live-action drama and moving on to movies. Anime has been my obsession for the past 2 years, and I have been translating 2D-video since last winter. I tend to have a mainstream taste, but I’m not afraid to speak out against the majority. You may have already read some of my film and anime reviews, and I know I come across very opinionated at times… I’m very passionate about anime and Japanese movies. I can be very outspoken about fansubbing too, but I will try my best not to stir up any drama with UTW 🙂
Somewhat “serious” or “sentimental” series usually get my attention. It’s probably why I really loved KamiMemo’s first episode, because it’s very much about the people as the case itself. You can expect to see me picking more series like it in the future if I can continue to translate many more series here. I am usually extremely picky when it comes to selecting which series to translate, but I definitely will finish what I have started (unless it’s agreed in advance that I would only translate a few episodes). So far, I have a perfect track record for completion of series, and I intend to extend that streak here in this group.
As some of you may have already noticed, I was the translator who “dropped” this series with gg fansubs. While the statement on that gg post was entirely correct, there is a really long and messy story behind it, and I want to clarify a few things.
I had originally proposed working on KamiMemo with UTW before gg, prior to taking the TL test, but certain turn of events led to it being released with gg. However, CR licensing had taken every show I was interested in, so I had to ask koda at gg to let me translate KamiMemo with UTW instead. Props to koda for putting up with my selfish requests, and assigning me to another great series this season!
Long story short, there was a typical fansub coordination nightmare at the beginning of the season, and I somehow ended up with two shows I really love for groups that I originally wanted to work with… because I’m lucky like that.
I also want to make a statement that all the shortcomings in gg fansub’s first KamiMemo release were completely my fault and mine alone. I underestimated speedsubbing by working under far-less-than-optimal physical conditions, and made miscommunications that led to it being released without editing. Needless to say, it will never happen again, especially with a group with such high standards as UTW, and I will do my best to produce the quality of translations expected from me.
I have been around here only for a brief period, but the staff and posters here at UTW seem very friendly, and I hope this will be the beginning of a long-lasting relationship.
So as I pray, Unlimited Translation Works!

NB:

This episode is 48mins long thus the file size is equivalent to roughly 2 single episodes.

Thanks for waiting!  UTW, Underwater and I, your guest translator, are proud to present to you THE iDOLM@STER.  New and improved, now with no giant robots! Our glorious, unified tag, [Chibiki], is a simple amalgam of three of our favorite idols: Chihaya, Hibiki and Miki (ordered to make the name sound good – Miki rules all our hearts!).

If you’ve been following Kusion’s storm of iM@S vids for the past several months, you know what’s coming. Singing, dancing, and a greater variety of idols than you can shake a stick at. While we’ve all been apprehensive as to the quality of A-1 Productions’ work, I personally think it’s safe to say that this is one of the finer releases this season. Viewers of NicoNico rated it #1 out of everything that came out!

Big thanks go to Kusion, the other leader of this project and wrangler of the Whiteboard of Doom (you’ll see), Daiz for working all day with us while sick, Raze for guiding us along all the while, and __ar for words of wisdom and magic fixes along the way.  Next week we’ll be even faster, now that we have everything in line and the team worked out!

As an added bonus! Daiz has prepared a sub track 2 for viewers who prefer their subs with as little untranslated Japanese as possible. Track 1 will be UTW style with common terms and titles included.

Enjoy the music, enjoy the surprises, enjoy the ride.  We’re looking forward to experiencing The iDOLM@STER with you!

Summer 2011 Plans

We are doing:
1) The iDOLM@STER (three-way joint with Underwater and a guest translator)
2) Kamisama no Memochou
3) Kamisama Dolls (using CR’s translation)
That will be all.
EDIT: Oh, I forgot to mention we’ll be doing Appleseed XIII on the side too.
UPDATE (July 12th): We no longer feel that Kamisama Dolls need us (with HorribleSubs and other groups releasing 720p rips using CR subs), so we won’t be doing the show. Sorry if we got your hopes up.

Gosick – 24 (Fin)

La fin~ and so that wraps up the 6 month run of the Gosick anime. I’d be lying if i said I didn’t enjoy working on this series, because I quite enjoyed working on it. It was neither about Japanese school kids, nor about Japan itself in general. The setting and the location were both breathes of fresh air to me, and there’s something about the whole “ye olde days” that sparks interest and keeps the flame burning strong. Now it’s pretty clear that they skipped a LOT and I do mean a LOT of details throughout the course of the series, and while that may be so, I felt they did a wonderful job of developing the characters and condensing ~4-5000pgs of material (13 novels @ ~3-400pg each) into the space of 24 ~21min episodes. I’m actually surprised they pulled it off as good as they did, and while it might have not been a perfect execution, I still felt it was exceptional and worthy of praise.
That’s enough finale blogging for me. I hope you guys enjoy the end of the final arc of the series (for those who haven’t already watched in anxiousness!)
The Victorique project consisted of myself, Raze and fnord basically, and the name will be put to rest with the last release of the Gosick Blu-rays (so it’ll be a while still lol~). And so with that, it’s time to roll the credits and close the curtains.
ar (Encoder/Timer/Titlesetter/OP Kara): I’ve already blogged all that I wanted to blog about, so tl;dr it was fun and I had plenty of time to slowpoke and re-encode stuff until I was happy with it. Also I probably spent more time editing/matching fonts/making templates/doing the logo than actual combined time typesetting the majority of the episodes (lol~).
Raze (TLC/Editor/QC): I got pulled into this side project when we figured that I might as well QC the CR scripts for this show since I was going to follow the series anyway. I guess this was a decent show. It did sometimes feel like Victorique was pulling solutions to the mysteries out of nowhere though, especially with the earlier arcs. Gosick was a huge chore to work on some weeks and a breeze on others, because the quality of the CR scripts varied greatly across episodes (random translation/grammar/diction errors here and there, and general awkward, unnatural phrasing). Still, it’s quite something to realize a project you’ve been working on for half a year has just ended. Hopefully you enjoyed our offering of Gosick!
fnord (OP & ED Translator/ED Kara): I was somewhat disappointed with Gosick’s mysteries when the show started, but it improved a great deal from there. All in all, it was a nice enough show, and I adore the first ED. I hope you liked Gosick as well.

Hidan no Aria – 12 (END)

So I remember the equivalent scene in the light novel being really sinister and full of despair, but in the anime they gave Vlad this hurrdurr retarded laugh and randomly changed the plot for no particular reason. Oh well, I guess there’s bound to be some of you out there who’ll enjoy this episode.
Either way, this marks the end of the Hidan no Aria TV project! The UTW staff were never really very motivated to work on this show, though (with the exception of commander`A); this is probably somewhat reflected in the curtain call comments below.
Raze (Translator/Editor/Last Resort Timer/QC): Yeah, I practically handled the script alone, especially towards the end. I did somewhat enjoy the light novel (although by the time I reached around volume 5 continuing it just wasn’t very high on my priority list), but I’m not sure I can say the same about the anime. At any rate, I hope you enjoyed my work!
commander`A (Timer ep1-6, 8, 11-12/Encoder ep1-6): Truely a spectacular series. I will do the BDs as well!
fnord (Typesetter): I strongly disliked working on Hidan no Aria and can only hope the people who watched it derived some sort of enjoyment from it. I most certainly didn’t.
Daiz (Encoder ep7-12): I actually watched a single episode of this series at one point. I will never get those 24 minutes of my life back. Episodes 11 and 12 gave me a nice chance to test out my new computer, though.
ar did the karaoke timing/styling, Kusion and Nikon both timed an episode each, and Moshiburner helped QC the first three or four episodes until he decided the show wasn’t worth his time anymore.
Oh, and commander`A really wanted to do the post for this last episode but I didn’t let him. Being the nice guy I am though, I’ve appended his very long (and, according to Kusion, pretty good) rant about why Hidan no Aria is the best show of 2011:
I still cannot believe that this is the finale of this awesome series… It’s also sad how people are saying that this animu sucked. Well, FYI, this was the BEST animu of 2011. Even the staff working on this series were lazy and mean. I mean, they kept saying harsh things about Aria-chan all the day. Like seriously, most of them did that just to troll loyal fans of Aria-chan, like me. Really. Unbelievable, isn’t it? Well, that’s life… I, for one, did my best to fight back for the sake of our great and beloved Aria-chama. I’ve been doing it from the past 2 months and I am willing to do it as long as there’s a shred of life left in this empty body of mine… And even after I die, I will keep haunting everyone who said mean things about Aria-tan and fight them till death. And I hope everyone who liked this animu has same passionate feelings towards Aria-pyon.
I actually missed working on episode 7 and 9… I still regret missing those episodes as no one in this group handles Aria-chan with care. They just did those episodes half-assedly and released them without any respect. I had horrible nightmares on those two nights. I’m sorry Aria-chan, I will make up for it when I do the BDs… I promise! Anyway, let’s stick to the topic. This week’s Aria was a double episode marathon, I know it must’ve been hard for all of you to wait for a week without Aria, I mean, waiting for a week itself was so hard… and then we had to wait for another week, which means there was no Aria for almost 14 days! But alas, everything came back on track when I saw two episodes back to back. I felt so relieved after having my dose of Aria-chan after a decade of waiting. Life is harsh. As Jean-Jacques Rousseau said once: “Patience is bitter, but its fruit is sweet!” I totally agree with him/her/it. The happiness of seeing Aria-chan in front of me was like, the feeling you have while having an intercourse with your opposite gender. No, actually, it was BETTER than that. I didn’t sleep last night as I had some work to do, but I cannot define how happy I was when I was given the script to time and heard Aria-chan for the first time in WEEKS! OH, MY, GOODNESS, that was insane. I forgot how tired I was… I was literally jumping up and down in excitement… I didn’t know what to do. I couldn’t restrain myself from crying. That warm and seductive voice of Aria-chan, that feeling of meeting your loved one after a long time… that was simply amazing. I think I should stop now or I’ll say things that I don’t want to. Happy fapping to Aria-chan.
I guess this isn’t really the end yet, since commander`A will be doing the BDs, and there’s one more episode to come on DVD apparently.
Enjoy and keep flying with us! I’ll make a formal announcement of our Summer 2011 plans sometime in the next few days.
P.S. from commander`A: We are going to be celebrating the brilliant ending of this series on Skype tonight. If you want to join us then add me (troll4ever_89) on Skype and I’ll add you in the group call!

Lots of Aria in a maid uniform in this episode. Riko continues to do what she does best: troll everyone around her.
Episode 12 will be out before I go to bed tonight (sometime in the next 6 hours). Enjoy this episode for now.

Gosick – 23

In the year 1925… Germany invaded Poland and triggered what would be known as the second World War, or so the story goes. In this universe, it seems like WW2 begins in the mid-20s. I guess we don’t get a timeskip after all ;<
The Christmas of 1924 (between 22 & 23) brought many a gift for all; Kujo got the gift of a haircut, Victorique a chess set, the Marquis de Blois a memento box, Cordelia some pyrotechnics and Roscoe (non-evil one) a pair of black matching pistols (see note at bottom)
That’s enough blogging for me. The delay this week was brought to you by subbing the Ano Hana finale and Raze being employed and overworked (so he claims~). Enjoy this weeks episode, only a few more days till the finale.
Also, with a double-aria this week it may affect Gosick’s release timeframe, but we’ll see what happens and how much work the script needs/etc. We’ll do our best, k~
Pistol note: The pistols Roscoe draws appear to be Mauser C96’s from afar, though on the close-up they have removable mags which the C96 didn’t get until the 1930’s, and look more like modern sub-machine guns than their early 20th century counterparts. I guess considering the timeline for the second world war, historical firearm accuracy would be the least of their worries (lol).

NB: Ano Hana Batch will be done when it’s done.

There’s lots of work to do on it, so when we’ve got the time we’ll get it all done and till then you wait patiently (even if you don’t it won’t make it any faster. Hell, we might even delay it more~).

Vergissmeinnicht (Ano Hana Tidbits)

ANO HANA SPOILERS. DON’T READ UNLESS…well, you know.
Addendum: ++ part added.
So here we are, folks. One last warning that by reading this you are landing on spoilers all over the place and that they will come suddenly. Though the post itself is more about little interesting tidbits rather than large plot summaries.
Well, I watched 11 out of 11 of the episodes (I only went through CCs and audio + static images when I TL’d one but watched it later) so I’ll consider myself to know the plot. I’m not here to make a summary or review and I’m definitely not going to spend the next four hours screen-capping to explain myself, so beware that this may very well turn into a wall of text. I’m just here to point out a few things that I noticed which people who really like those “little things that aren’t important but add more connection to the various parts of the work as a whole” would enjoy. Mainly because I am one of those people.
For starters, some things you may have already noticed:

 • The empty glass milk bottle containing some flowers that you see at several points in the show is Poppo’s makeshift grave for Menma. He leaves it at the top of the hill, presumably where Menma slid into the river, and can be seen changing the flowers in it. (Ep5)
 • “The name of the flower (we/they) saw that day is”: after the show ends in the final episode, the image showing Menma has those words as the caption. Obviously it’s the flipped over version of “We Still Don’t Know the Name of the Flower we saw That Day.”, minus the answer. As you may have guessed from the episode 11 post pic, title of this post, and a certain prediction that was floating around sometime near the airing of episode 3, the flower is indeed a Forget-me-not. Though Menma’s wish as pertaining to the plot was not literally to “forget me not”, it can be inferred that she indeed wishes to stay in the hearts of the Super Peace Busters.
 • The flowers which fly everywhere in the ED and the flower acting as a placeholder for Menma in the OP are both modeled after forget-me-nots.
 • Expanding a bit from there…

 • Menma’s death is inferred to be a fast slide into the river, followed by drowning either due to injuries upon impact with the water or rocks, inability to stay afloat in the fast current, or both along with any other things that may have happened. Coincidentally (or is it?) a legend pertaining to the forget-me-not is something similar, with a knight drowning because he fell into a river while picking some flowers on the bank for his lady. As he throws one of the flowers onto the bank he shouts “Vergiss mein nicht”, which becomes the name of the flower.
 • The opening song for this show is called ?????, which translates to The Blue Bookmark. One line mentions a ???????, which is a pressed flower bookmark. Assuming these two are the same bookmark, it can be inferred that indeed the singer is in possession of a bookmark containing a pressed forget-me-not.
 • To wrap things up, some trivia:

 • This show is based in Chichibu, a large city in Saitama (the prefecture directly north of Tokyo). You can tell from ????, its name, which appears in various places.
 • The high-level school Yukiatsu and Tsuruko are attending appears to be in Hannou, as can be seen from the signs in the train station they’re in (????????(Ep5). The Seibu Chichibu Line runs through this station, so if you’d like to take a visit you know what to ride 😀
 • There is only one episode in which the entire ending sequence runs (Ep9)(the music begins with the ED animation instead of music first then ED animation), whereas the OP animation either runs in its entirety or not at all, excluding the finale.

Well, that’s it for now. A great show overall I must say. Beautiful artwork, developed plot, vibrant characters… what more is there to ask? If you have any other cool stories pertaining to this show that I didn’t mention, go ahead and comment it. I might add it into the list up here 😀 or I might just be lazy and tell you guys to read the comments ._. But anyway if you have any questions regarding the plot (I’m quite sure it’s easier to understand than meduka meguca) go ahead and comment as well.
Now if you’ll excuse me, I’ll be picking flowers at my nearby neighborhood riverbank.
++: Some clarification on the epilogue. Everything indeed works out for the crew after Menma goes away. Anaru and Jin-tan are in a very friendly, if not outright intimate relationship (a pink handkerchief with wabbits all over it? MANLY.). Tsuruko rises back to her godly position as “alternative” for Yukiatsu (though really, I’m pretty sure he’s happy about it too). Poppo’s trying to get back into the education system so he doesn’t ruin the rest of his life, and they all seem to be a little more easygoing around each other following their internal development. And of course, the Super Peace Busters will always be friends.
Just a little explanation in case Jin-tan’s “explanation” was too metaphorical and/or vague. Yes Anaru fans, that means she at least partially, at most completely had her wish granted. Being one myself I must say it made the ending all the more touching for me.
Again, that’s all for now. Bye-bye!
Ano Hi Mita Hana no Namae wo Bokutachi wa Mada Shiranai. – 11 (END)

This is a UTW post. I repeat, this is a UTW post. We are not GG. Flower post pic though. Teehee!

Some people think I never say bad things about stuff I watch. My opinion is that I just find good things about shows a lot easier than bad things, and that I don’t find anything good about criticizing things that I can’t somehow fix myself. That said, epic finale folks ;_; I’ll add on an extremely long-winded wall of tl;dr about the series once i’m not playing LoL (what, it’s Sunday) so look forward to that! 😛
And the obligatory staff curtain call!
Moshiburner (Translator/QC): 25 o’clock in the morning or not, this show made my Thursday. This is the first show I’ve worked on with so much work going into its content, and every week I found it to be worthy of multiple re-watchings, whether it be for QC pass number 3 or simply because I’m waiting on someone else to finish their part. Worth every drop of effort I put in to (almost) perfect each script. Which includes timing one of the episodes. You’re not alone ar, lol 😛 Anyway the series was a great follow-up to spring season (almost lost my head in that one with all that entropy increase) so I’m hoping there’s more stuff I can sincerely laud in fall season. Preferably the thing I’m working on, because otherwise I won’t watch it (unless people keep spamming OMG THE [anime title here e.g. meduka] EPISODE WAS OMG every week in the staff channel) since I’m busy n stuff. Conclusion: Amazing catharsis, has those you-watch-it-then-you-cry-then-you-watch-it-again scenes. Definitely a pick for 2011’s recommended shows.
Raze (Editor/QC): This show turned out to be a LOT of effort to work on for some reason (Hidan no Aria airing at pretty much the same time didn’t help either) and I kind of altered my editing style for the show as it progressed. It’s been a bumpy road and we made a couple derps along the way, but here we are with the finale. And what a finale that was! Great series.
ar (Encoder/Typesetter/Timer): Twas a fabulous show, well other than the changing of ED lines every week (lucky there wasn’t k-timing to fix) and that damn pain in the ass diary with all its curving pages and zooming and panning and whatever else it did. Thanks to comfag and his travelling around the world, I ended up timing this series too for the last few eps so it ended up being a bigger pain every week than the pain it started off with (lol). Anyway I enjoyed the series, but I probably won’t be typesetting and encoding a FujiTV series again on the same day anytime soon, I’m beat.
commander`A timed the first six episodes or so and then disappeared. He also stinx.
