Spring 2013 Plans

  1. Photokano – As the spiritual successor of Amagami, how could we pass this up?
  2. Railgun S – Joint with our bros at Mazui.
  3. Suisei no Gargantia – Joint with Vivid, a new group a few of our buddies formed. You can visit their IRC HERE.

These plans are subject to change depending on what simulcasters pick for the season.
There’s also the Evangelion Q movie that comes out about a month from now. We’ll be subbing that with THORAnime like we did with the second movie.
Here’s to another great season of anime!

Toaru Majutsu no Index – Endymion no Kiseki PV

I kept holding this off until the last minute, but every time I watch the trailer it looks amazing.

Enjoy, until the blu-ray comes out 10 years from now!

Winter 2013 Plans

Oh, before I forget. I’ll make this short.
New Series
Minami-ke Tadaima
Puchimasu! (as Chibiki)
Ongoing Series
Shinsekai Yori
Little Busters! (as UTW-Mazui)
There’s another series we’re looking at, but big question mark about picking it up. We were looking at Sasami-san@Gambaranai, but we weren’t able to schedule our lives around it.
P.S.: It’s a new year and all, so we will be switching from XviD to H.264 480p 8-bit for our compatibility releases for new projects from now on. However, the compatibility releases for Shinsekai Yori will still be encoded using XviD for consistency.

Fall 2012 Plans

Sword Art Online continues into the Fall 2012 season.
Our new shows are:

  1. Shinsekai Yori – We’re taking it nice and slow subbing the first episode, so don’t expect it any earlier than tomorrow. Whether we’ll continue with it or not depends if CR is simulcasting with the CS-Asahi broadcast (which is the first airing and what we’ll be using) or with the terrestrial broadcast (which is 5 days later). We will drop it if it’s the former.
  2. Chuunibyou demo Koi ga Shitai – This will be a joint with rori Fansubs, and we will be releasing under the URW label (short for “Unlimited Rori Works”; Pedobear would kill to get in!).
  3. Little Busters! – We will be joining forces with our good friends over at Mazui again for this show. If this gets licensed, we will drop it if the streaming is available any earlier than 24 hours after it airs in Japan.

That makes four shows this season (oh boy). Here’s to another great season of anime!

Summer 2012 Plans

We are confirmed for the following:

  • Kono Naka ni Hitori, Imouto ga Iru!
  • Sword Art Online (this will be a joint with GotWoot Fansubs; you can help decide our group name in the poll to the right!)

Accel World continues into the Summer 2012 anime season.
I wanted to do Muv-luv Alternative: Total Eclipse as I’m a huge fan of âge stuff, but with CR simulcasting it and staff unavailability, picking up this show will probably be more trouble than it’s worth.
Certain staff members *cough cough* will make good use of this breather to work through their gigantic backlogs, I’m sure…
EDIT: I’ve resetted the poll to include the “GutWorks” option, courtesy of Xythar. Please vote again!
EDIT (30/6/2012): It appears Crunchyroll has licensed SAO as well. Here’s what we’ll do:

  1. If it’s a latecast (i.e. 12 or more hours after it airs in Japan) and/or their translation is shit, we’ll push ahead with our original translation.
  2. If it’s an on-the-dot/few-hours-late simulcast and the translation is good, then we’ll either edit CR’s scripts or drop the project. Those of us who have read or are reading the LNs are really enjoying the story so far though, so it seems likely we’ll go ahead and edit CR’s scripts.

Spring 2012 Plans

We have decided to pick up the following:

  1. Fate/Zero Season 2
  2. Accel World
  3. Tasogare Otome x Amnesia

Whether we actually end up working on the latter two shows is still subject to CR/nico/funi simulcasting.
There is another show that we’re still considering whether or not to do; if we do decide to go ahead with it, you’ll find out what it is when we release it.

Happy 2nd Birthday, UTW!

Today marks the day UTW officially turns two years old!

UTW has come a long, long way since its creation, and it is the industriousness of the staff and your enduring and enthusiastic support over the years that keeps UTW going day by day. Thank you all, staff and fans alike, for making UTW what it is today!
To celebrate the occasion, I figured I’d share a few statistics pertaining to what we’ve achieved these past two years:

  • We’ve subbed 16 complete weekly series (excluding 6 movies and 3 OVAs/OVA series), which is about 2 per season.
  • That’s 270 separate full-length episodes (excluding movies and including OVAs and episodes of ongoing series), which is about 33 per season.
  • Our release file count currently sits at 737, which is about 92 per season.
  • We’ve released 346GB worth of anime, which is about 43GB per season.
  • The current number of active staff is 8. We’ve never had more than that, either.

Those numbers probably pale in comparison to older and/or bigger groups, but it’s pretty incredible to think that we’ve come so far having just subbed 16 complete TV series with such a small staff. I believe it speaks volumes about how we work and the values we represent.
None of us were free or bored enough to set up some elaborate April Fool’s joke yesterday, so I guess that’s unfortunate for those of you who enjoy that sort of thing. I was also going to announce our Spring 2012 plans in this post, but we’ve decided to wait a little longer to see how things play out; we’ll probably make the announcement in 2-3 days.
Here’s to another year! Happy 2nd Birthday, UTW!

Happy Birthday, Raze!

Today is the birthday of our great friend, Raze. I believe I speak for the entire staff when I say, it’s been nothin’ but a blast working with him, so let’s all raise our glasses (hopefully filled with alcohol) to Raze!
Happy Birthday, buddy!

So, Raze. Are you going to give her what she wants?

About Fate/Zero BDs

Yes, we’re working on them and have been since the BDMVs appeared on Share. We said we’d do it and never announced we’re dropping them.
Most of you are expecting that we’ll wave our magic wands and somehow manage to have the entire 13 episodes plus all the specials perfectly subbed two days after the box set got released in Japan or something. It’s not going to happen.
Downloading ~120GB off Share happens to take more than a few hours; it takes days. We only just finished grabbing the last disc. You should all be glad the guy who’s uploading it from Japan did it so quickly with a fast connection too, because we wouldn’t have gotten it any faster even if we had ordered the box set itself.
Some of you also seem to have conveniently forgotten that we need to encode 13 episodes and at least 2 specials. Encoding isn’t an instant process (omg!) and actually takes hours per episode if you don’t want shitty video. If the BD video was of perfect quality we’d probably have it all ready for you in about a week from now if we busted our asses; unfortunately, they’re not, meaning we’ll be experimenting to find the right settings and be forced to filter quite heavily, which will slow the encoding dramatically. This picture should demonstrate the main problem we face quite clearly.
If you have zero patience and don’t care about video quality, allow me to point you to these releases that are already available; some of them even have the official English subs that came with the BD box. If you’re going to wait for our Fate/Zero Blurays, don’t expect them until at least 3-4 weeks later. They’re not going to be ready any earlier.
As for the specials, we’ll most likely be doing the Einzbern Consultation Room ones; they’re typesetting hell, though, so it’ll be a while until they’re ready. I’m still on the fence with the drama CD (which is basically about Kiritsugu’s and Irisviel’s first month or so together). We definitely won’t be doing the commercials.

DDLs and Donations

We’ve opened donations for the first time in UTW history; the funds will contribute towards paying for our main storage and distro servers. Please help us out by donating; every dollar counts!
If you like reading giant walls of text, you can read more on the subject after the break.
EDIT:: You. guys. are. AWESOME.
Your donations totaled $412.52 USD in the space of just a few hours! I can now fully pay for the servers for two months and still have change for the month after.
Donations are now closed (until at least two months later). Thanks to all of you who contributed!
